From Spikes to Spindles (1976; 46 minutes). Director: Christine Choy. Producer: Third World Newsreel. A portrait of lower Manhattan Chinatown in the mid-1970s. Sparked by the mobilization of Asian American New Yorkers against police violence following the NYPD’s brutal assault against 27 year old Peter Yew in Chinatown, the film considers over a century of Chinese American history via archival sources and interviews with local youth, workers, activists, and politicians.
