Understanding Systemic Oppression, and Privilege with Tim Wise

Learn foundational knowledge of how power operates in society, shapes injustices, and creates disparities. Additionally, learn how to recognize and analyze systemic power structures and their impact on marginalized communities.
The ins and outs of how power operates can be one of the most confusing, and most impactful, facets of our society — our next Solidarity in Action speaker series event will dive into the details of how and why
Our society is built upon a set of unwritten rules that govern what is seen as acceptable and who is valued. Those rules are put in place by the people, communities, organizations, and more that hold power. But if the rules are (often) unwritten, how do they wield that power?
On this call, Tim Wise will walk us through how power operates in society, shapes injustices, and creates disparities and what it means to recognize those systemic power structures and analyze their impact on marginalized communities.
For some help with context, you can read Tim Wise’s Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America and/or watch The Great White Hoax: Donald Trump & the Politics of Race & Class in America (or here for free if you have a library card) before the training.
Tim Wise is among the most prominent anti-racist writers and educators in the United States. He is the author of nine books, including his latest essay collection, Dispatches from the Race War, and his highly acclaimed memoir, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son.
