The Psychology of Hate: Unpacking the Roots of Prejudice

The Psychology of Hate: Understanding the Roots of Prejudice
Hate doesn’t begin with violence, it begins with the quiet, everyday biases and stereotypes that shape how we see and treat others. This panel explores the psychological foundations of prejudice, showing how fear, identity, and belonging intersect to fuel division and exclusion.
Drawing from decades of social psychology research, our discussion will examine how cultural stereotypes, whether overtly negative or seemingly “positive”, reinforce inequality and social tension. We’ll also look at what happens when identities go unrecognized or feel threatened, and how those experiences can escalate from subtle bias to hostility and hate.
Through this conversation, we’ll connect the science of human behavior to the lived realities of communities, including South Asians and other immigrant groups, who often navigate both hyper-visibility and invisibility in American life. Together, we’ll explore how understanding these psychological roots can help us interrupt bias early, rebuild belonging, and foster empathy before prejudice takes deeper hold.
Additional details about the event’s speakers will be shared as the date approaches. Stay tuned!
