The Tenement Museum, in partnership with Roosevelt House present: The 14th Amendment: Citizenship & Belonging in America delves into the profound and ongoing impact of this amendment, particularly its guarantee of birthright citizenship, on American identity. Featuring renowned historians Mae Ngai, a specialist on citizenship, and Harold Holzer, an Abraham Lincoln authority, this timely panel explores the 14th Amendment’s complex history, its role in defining citizenship, and its relevance to contemporary debates about belonging.

Join us on March 17th — in person at Roosevelt House or online on YouTube Live — as we examine how the promise of equal protection has been both realized and challenged throughout American history. Furthermore, we will draw upon examples from the stories preserved by the Tenement Museum, bringing historical legal debates into the context of the lived experiences of immigrants and citizens.
