Retribution

October 31, 2026 @ 6:30 pm - 8:15 pm EDT
$15

In anticipation of the fifth issue of Narrow Margin, a quarterly magazine of film criticism, its editors will present Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Retribution (2006) on Halloween night. The forthcoming issue pairs Kurosawa, contemporary cinema’s greatest chronicler of anomie and social malaise, with one of his most important influences, the perennially underrated Richard Fleischer.

Retribution
Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Japan, 2006, DCP, 104 min.
In Japanese with English subtitles.

Introduced by Narrow Margin editor Hicham Awad.

In Kurosawa’s ghost story, tricks of the mind and tricks of the earth collide. A seasoned detective (Kōji Yakusho) investigating a series of murders roams a waterlogged expanse of ruin and construction in search of clues, but the ghost of a murder victim begins to burrow into his mind and house as an earthquake threatens to slide the city back into sea. (Narrow Margin)

“Watch out for a brief, splendid shot dedicated to the memory of the late Richard Fleischer, one of Kurosawa’s masters.” – Shiguéhiko Hasumi

A limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to NYC college students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.
