Nurturing a Positive Racial Identity in Asian American Children (Saturday)

June 28, 2025 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT
Join us for a 2 hour workshop to learn, discuss, and share stories about growing a positive racial identity in Asian American children!

**Due to low registration, Saturday’s workshop is canceled. Please register for Thursday evening’s workshop.

What does it look like to raise an Asian American child with a positive racial identity and sense of self? How do I talk about race, ethnicity, and nationality? What about racism and microaggressions?

Join us for a 2 hour workshop as we explore how to cultivate a positive racial and ethnic identity for Asian American children. Along with learning about children’s racial and ethnic socialization development, we’ll be sharing stories, reflecting on our own racial identities, and using exciting resources from EmbraceRace’s new toolkit on raising Asian American children!

This workshop is for any caregiver that plays a meaningful role with an Asian American child or children, either at home, in the classroom, or other spaces. Parents, guardians, educators, and all caregivers welcome.

The workshop will be led by Andrea Huang and Maryam Zahid. Andrea identifies as Chinese American and is the Community Building Manager for EmbraceRace, where she facilitates and oversees classes, cohorts, and workshops. Maryam identifies as a South Asian first-generation immigrant and is the Senior Communications Manager for EmbraceRace.

We use the term Asian American inclusively, so that means East Asian Americans, Southeast Asian Americans, South Asian Americans, multiracial / biracial and multiethnic Asian Americans, and adoptees from Asia. This workshop and toolkit does not focus on children of Pacific Islander heritage or Southwest Asian Americans / Middle Eastern ethnicities, as their racial identity experiences often differ significantly from Asian American children.
