A Map Division specialist highlights how cartography reveals histories, perspectives, and legacies that are often overlooked in traditional narratives.

The Library’s Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division is one of the world’s leading collections, renowned for its size, scope, and unique holdings. Reference Librarian Jo-Ann Wong will showcase maps of Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native Hawaiian communities, examining them from multiple viewpoints. She will highlight selections that spark deeper conversations about who has the authority to tell their stories, alternative approaches to mapmaking, and the enduring impacts of colonialism on cartographic representation.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Jo-Ann Wong is currently a Librarian II at the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division. She received her MILS with certification in Archives from Pratt Institute. She is currently the Scholarship Committee Chair for the Western Association of Map Libraries (WAML) and on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Map and Geography Libraries (JMGL).
