Learning How To Read By Moonlight

March 26 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Join us for a one-night only reading of a new play with music by Gaven Trinidad and directed by Nicholas Polonio.

A collection of Filipino, Fil-Am, and AANHPI artists is coming together for a concert reading of the play Learning How to Read by Moonlight to fundraise for University Settlement’s Adult English Classes. The classes are offered at a variety of levels to adult immigrant students during the daytime, evenings, and weekends, free of charge.

Nick Polonio is the director. Carolina Do and Ariel Estrada are producing, with co-producers: New York Theatre Workshop, The Song Collective, Betterfly Productions, Leviathan Lab, and University Settlement.

This 2025 Boston Critics’ Pick play follows a young, undocumented Filipino family’s journey to build a home in Queens, New York. The story is told through the eyes of six-year-old Eddie, exploring his fears and joys in a world that tells him he has no home. The play is performed in both English and Tagalog. Though written in 2019, we believe the play’s exploration of immigration, language, and resistance is resonant now more than ever. We hope that through our storytelling, we raise funds for these amazing language programs, as well as remind our audiences that they are human.

Tickets are pay-what-you-can, and all proceeds go directly to University Settlement.

If you cannot attend, there is an option to still donate. Every donation, no matter how small, counts! Please feel free to share this information with others.
