Koshari, Kitchari, Arroz con Gandules: Food of the Masses

Rice and Lentils together form the basis of nutritious, delicious, and cheap meals that have fed our peoples for generations. At this event, we will serve small portions of three different dishes that feature Rice and Lentils: Koshari (Egyptian), Kitchari (Indian), and Arroz con Gandules (Puerto Rican).
But there’s more! Come for the tasting, and stay for a teach-in on how these foods of the masses tell our personal and cultural stories. It will range from family anecdotes to the history of how Boricuas, Indians, and Egyptians have fought to provide self-sustenance and forge a cultural identity amidst colonialism.
Throughout the event, attendees will have space to be in community with each other and reflect on the foods that connect them to their own identities.
