Join us for “Japan FantASIA” at C5BK in brooklyn for a fun filled night of performances. Mariko Shibata will be performing for the first time with Hideo from Tokyo, Japan. Let’s also enjoy the music of local favorites Rino Aise and Shiou Funayama.

Hideo (shakuhachi) and Mariko Shibata (dance)
Hideo @rakudoan was born in Tokyo, Japan. After learning different styles of shakuhachi playing, in 1986 he joined the Komuso Kenkyu-kai (monks of emptiness), a research organization on Komuso monks and their shakuhachi music. He has been performing honkyoku pieces since then in both Japan and the United States. Besides his involvement in the tradition of Komuso music, he has been active in collaboration with performing arts such as Modern Dance, Butoh, Flamenco, Performance Artists and Noh dances.

Mariko Shibata @marikoshibata_ny is from Japan. She is currently a Yoga Alliance Certificate Teacher and Performer. She has been dancing in the US and Japan with many dance companies including; Mariles Yearby (“RENT” choreographer), Nia Love, Janine Williams, Keila Cordova and more for over three decades. She also has experienced teaching dance many times, worked backstage, and choreographed, directed/produced for several productions. She enjoys being a mom of three kids and creating, dancing, moving, feeling and performing. Huge thanks for her husband and family for her support.

RIOH: Rino Aise (sanshin, vocal) and Shiou Funayama (keyboards)
Rino Aise @rinoaise is the leader of Rino Aise Band, studied under Ryushu Kubota, the 26th master of folk song, the “Esashi Oiwake” in Japan and moved to New York in 2015. As a singer and Sanshin player, she started to perform at Japanese festivals and anime festivals. She sings folk songs, anime songs, J-POP, and city pop, etc.

Shiou Funayama @mojashiou is a member of Rino Aise Band. He and I played together at autumn festivals, spring festivals, and music venues in New York after we performed together at a summer festival held in Mitsuwa, New Jersey in 2023.
