Asia Society presents Kyoko Kagawa Rarities, a series of five remarkable films starring the beloved Japanese actress, in partnership with Anthology Film Archives, from August 13-16, 2026.

Farewell to the Highland Station

A botanical researcher (Michitaro Mizushima) visits a tuberculosis sanatorium in the highlands. Collecting plants in the area for his research, he falls in love with the nurse in white (Kyoko Kagawa).

Produced quickly to capitalize on the massive success of Minoru Obata’s hit song of the same title, within the genre trappings of the “kayo eiga” (song film), Farewell to the Highland Station elevates to the sublime under the masterful direction of Nobuo Nakagawa. Known in most histories exclusively for his classics of the horror genre, legendary critic Shiguehiko Hasumi has explained that Nakagawa is indistinguishable without this film. Something similar could also be said about Kagawa: that if this film were known, her role in it as the young nurse would likely be amongst her most iconic.

A revelatory film, newly subtitled on the occasion of this series, for what is believed to be its U.S. premiere. —Joseph Eusebio
