Chosen: Screening & Discussion

October 10, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm EDT

Presented by the Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York (KALAGNY) and Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE). Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU.

In 2020, five Korean Americans of diverse backgrounds with competing political views run for US Congress, as COVID-19, racial violence, and economic crises continue to ravage the nation.

David Kim is a young, progressive candidate running in Koreatown, Los Angeles, which boasts the largest concentration of Koreans outside of Korea.

Marilyn Strickland is a Korean and Black centrist Democratic candidate running in Tacoma, Washington.

Young Kim and Michelle Park Steel, both Republican candidates running in Orange County, show unapologetically strong allegiance to President Trump, and seek to become, along with Marilyn Strickland, the first Korean American Congresswomen.

And finally, Andy Kim, the only incumbent out of the five, faces an uphill battle in his New Jersey district, where no Democrat has won an election twice in a row since the Civil War.

The feature-length documentary, directed by Joseph Juhn, was selected at over fifteen film festivals around the world, most notably at Jeonju International Film Festival, Hawaii International Film Festival, and at the Asian American International Film Festival, where it won the Audience Choice Best Feature Documentary.

Following the screening, Juhn participates in a Q&A.
