APIDA Hip Hop Scholars Webinar Series: Filipino Americans in Hip Hop (2 of 4)

APIDA Hip Hop Scholars Webinar Series: Filipino Americans in Hip Hop
Join the Asian American Education Project for our workshop series, APIDA Hip Hop Scholars Webinars.
In this second webinar, we will be joined by Mark R. Villegas who will be discussing the contributions and representations of Filipino Americans in Hip Hop. Filipino Americans have been embracing hip hop to explore racial positionality through the genre’s connection to memories of colonial and racial violence.
Mark Villegas is an associate professor of American Studies at Franklin & Marshall College. His book, Manifest Technique: Hip Hop, Empire, and Visionary Filipino American Culture (University of Illinois Press, 2021), examines Filipino Americans’ decades-long commitment to crafting, worldmaking, and collaborating in hip hop culture. His new project, tentatively titled Geek Hop: Study, Science, and Orientalism in Hip Hop Culture, observes hip hop’s “geeky” elements reflected in comic book culture, martial arts, anime, and science fiction.
