A new report found immigration authorities detained 3,705 Asian Americans for deportation from February 2025 through July.

That’s triple the number arrested during the same six-month period one year earlier under President Joe Biden, according to a report from the UCLA Asian American Studies Center and UCLA Center for Neighborhood Knowledge.

The study found the surge in expulsions began in May, peaked in June and declined in July. The author’s speculated court rulings challenging Trump’s actions may have led to the decrease at the end of the six-months. The administration has set a goal of 1 million deportations per year.

The authors also found the overwhelming majority of arrests involved people with no criminal record or major felonies despite the Trump administration’s pledge to deport the “worst of the worst.”

The report states the percentage of the “worst of the worst” arrested was actually higher under Biden than Trump, 35% vs 31%.

Worst of the worst is an actual category classified by immigration authorities.

The president of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Democratic Club of San Diego told KPBS that even legal immigrants are now afraid to leave their homes.
