SUMMARY:Community Safety\, Carceral Design\, and Dreaming Otherwise
DESCRIPTION:Building on years of organizing\, this conversation brings together artists\, organizers\, and community members to examine the impact of the Borough-Based Jail Plan (BBJP) in New York City\, with a focus on the skyscraper jail being constructed in Chinatown. Situating the project within a broader landscape of mass incarceration and displacement—from the police takeover of Park Row to the expanding carceral reach in Chinatown—we ask: what does community safety mean and who gets to define it? In place of a jail\, what else could be here? \nThe program explores the role of artists and cultural workers in the aestheticization of carceral systems through design\, and how art can obscure the violence of incarceration even as it can also serve as a tool of resistance. We invite participants to reflect on what it means to refuse participation in carceral design and to imagine alternative futures grounded in care\, collective well-being\, and worlds beyond punishment.

Due to the limited size of our basement space\, each shift has 8 spots available.\n\n\nPlease choose at least one shift that works for you.  Sign-ups are first come\, first served.\n\n\n\nJoin us *THIS* Sunday January 18th from 1-5pm for our first horse puppet art build session with multidisciplinary artist Elsa Saade! You can register for hourly slot sign-ups for both 1/18 and 1/25 here! We can’t wait to bring our horse puppet to life with you 🙂 Our horse puppet will be making its debut on March 1st as part of an alternative people’s parade to the annual NYC Lunar New Year parade. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of ‘Rising Lotus\,’ a collection of imaginative ceramic jars by artist Michelle Wen on Friday\, October 3rd // 6-8pm.\n\n\nWing on Wo is thrilled to present ‘Rising Lotus\,’ a collection of imaginative ceramic jars by artist Michelle Wen. Inspired by her childhood visits to Chinatown\, Michelle creates a collection that not only breathes new life into the shop’s apothecary history but also uses the jar as a vessel to transport us to an otherworldly landscape of a lotus garden. This collection and its meticulously crafted ink painting and sculptural details are a love letter to Michelle’s family\, honoring her grandfather’s stories of a heavenly landscape of unfathomable beauty\, her father’s legacy of Chinese ink painting\, and Michelle’s mom and grandmother’s matriarchal power that continue to fuel her to keep expanding her practice. We are so thrilled to be sharing this work at W.O.W. as part of our ongoing Centennial programming <3 Join us for the opening on Friday\, October 3 from 6-8pm! \nABOUT MICHELLE WEN \n@michelle_wen_artist \nMichelle Wen is a ceramic artist and instructor born and raised in Brooklyn\, New York\, and received her BFA from Pratt Institute. An important aspect of Michelle’s practice is community engagement\, as she has been teaching arts and ceramics at a non-profit in Bed-Stuy for eight years. Michelle also continues to hold fundraisers to support humanitarian\, environmental\, and social justice causes by raffling off her ceramics. Michelle is honored to be showing her work at Wing on Wo\, as Chinatown still plays a significant role in her life and remains a place of gathering and sentimental value for her family. \nMichelle’s work has been featured in Vanity Fair and Pottery Making Illustrated. She has collaborated with the Brooklyn Nets\, the YES Network\, Asian Women Giving Circle\, and CUNY TV. Featured exhibitions include The Brooklyn Museum\, the Montclair Art Museum\, and the iidrr Gallery in Chinatown.
