SUMMARY:Disrupting Microaggressions Against Asian Americans: An Anti-Bias Workshop for Educators
DESCRIPTION:Join educators and Teach Asian American Stories Ambassadors Dr. Darrell DeTample\, and Raymund Mantes to learn how to identify and combat anti-Asian bias in the classroom and in our schools. \nIn this workshop\, educators from all disciplines come together to deepen their understanding of their AAPI students. Together\, we explore the complex history and multifaceted identity of the AAPI community\, unpack shared experiences and stories\, counter harmful stereotypes and misconceptions\, and address the troubling issue of anti-Asian hate. Educators will leave with a better understanding of the AAPI diaspora\, narratives\, and lived experiences\, empowering them to create more inclusive and culturally responsive educational spaces. \nFacilitators: \nDr. Darrell DeTample is a high school social studies teacher\, part-time lecturer at the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University\, co-founder of NJ HEART\, and Teach Asian American Stories Ambassador. He received his EDd from Rutgers University in 2016 with a research focus on Anti-Racism Education (ARE). \nRaymund Mantes is a middle school social studies teacher\, SEED leader (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity)\, and Teach Asian American Stories Ambassador. \nHosted in partnership with NJEA. SUMMARY:Where is the PI in AAPI? Centering Oceania Histories in K-12 Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:This workshop sheds light on some of the many overlooked histories of Oceania\, or the Pacific Islands\, to recenter the “PI” in “AAPI.” This 90-min session will give an overview of U.S. Pacific Islander history\, covering topics of colonization and military intervention\, and interrogate the common misconstructions of the Pacific and its people. SUMMARY:Exploring Foundations and Futures: Asian American and Pacific Islander Multimedia Textbook
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the UCLA Asian American Studies Center\, Teach Asian American Stories invites educators to explore Foundations and Futures\, a newly launched free and online multimedia textbook that centers Asian American and Pacific Islander histories and perspectives – because our history is your history. \nThis interactive session will begin with a guided walkthrough of the textbook\, highlighting its rich collection of chapters\, media\, and classroom-ready resources. Participants will then have dedicated time to explore the platform and consider how it can support their own teaching. \nWe’ll close with a preview of the curriculum modules for the chapter\, “The Tape Family and Chinese American Civil Rights.” We will examine the Tape v. Hurley (1885) case to explore the distinctions between exclusion and segregation and to open up broader conversations about race\, access to education\, and belonging. Educators will leave with practical tools and inspiration to bring this new resource into their classrooms in meaningful ways. \nFree and open to all. Prior to joining the Foundations and Futures team\, Christian taught middle school Social Studies in New York City and also worked with Filipinx-American nonprofit organizations. From his experiences as both a student and educator\, he noticed the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were barely represented in curriculum and other classroom materials. This absence drives Christian to reform curriculum by advocating for all schools to have AAPI and Ethnic Studies as required learning. He aims to elevate voices of the AAPI community and ensure that their stories and cultures are taught with fidelity.

DESCRIPTION:Since 2020\, AAPF’s summer schools have served as foundational platforms for learning about the forbidden histories and knowledge that make collective advocacy and activation possible. \nOver the course of five Wednesdays starting May 27th\, and together with our partners the Freedom to Learn Network and Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies at Columbia Law School\, Backtalkers Academy through homerooms\, plenaries\, intensives and office hours\, will engage in interactive conversations on Critical Race Theory\, historical memory\, feminism\, democracy\, and education. Featuring some of the most distinguished racial justice and democracy experts including Carol Anderson\, Barbara Arnwine\, Kimberlé Crenshaw\, Ibram X. Kendi\, Nancy MacLean\, Jason Stanley\, and Kaye Wise Whitehead\, and many more\, this is a space to sharpen your analysis of the democratic crisis we are living through and forge the tools needed to fight back. \nWe will be running a special 10% early bird discount to the first 100 people who register by April 10th.
