Join AAPI New Jersey on Friday\, May 22\, for an evening celebrating the Teach Asian American Stories 2025-2026 Fellowship and the debut of our new documentary Roots & Routes: A Brief History of Asian Americans in the Garden State. \nWe’ll celebrate this year’s TAAS Fellows as they complete the 2025-2026 Fellowship\, honoring the real\, concrete change they’ve brought to classrooms across New Jersey. Then we’ll screen our brand new motion graphic film\, an intimate exploration of the people\, places\, and moments that define Asian American history right here in the Garden State. \nCome to celebrate. SUMMARY:Teaching Asian America in Elementary Classrooms: A Workshop for K–5 Curriculum Supervisors in Montclair NJ
DESCRIPTION:Noreen Naseem Rodríguez and Sohyun An\, authors of Teaching Asian America in Elementary Classrooms\, will lead a hands-on workshop designed for K–5 Curriculum Supervisors and Chief School Administrators. Drawing from their book and the Stop AAPI Hate K-12 Curricular Framework they designed\, they will share how to move beyond surface-level lessons and stereotypes to bring Asian American histories\, stories\, and voices into everyday teaching. This half-day session will offer practical strategies and resources to help participants guide and equip teachers to create lessons that are inclusive\, engaging\, and integrate. Attendees will explore ready-to-use materials\, children’s books\, and classroom ideas that connect AAPI perspectives to literacy\, social studies\, the arts\, and more. Participants will leave with books\, tools and inspiration to help AAPI students—and all students—see themselves in the curriculum. \nFree. Professional Development Hours awarded. \nPlease email isabella.kasegrande@aapinewjersey.org for any questions. \n— \nNoreen Naseem Rodríguez is an Associate Professor of Elementary Education and Educational Justice in the College of Education and Core Faculty in the Asian Pacific American Studies Program at Michigan State University. She studies the pedagogical practices of Asian American educators and how elementary educators teach so-called “difficult histories” through children’s literature and primary sources. Before becoming a teacher educator\, she was a bilingual elementary teacher in Austin\, Texas for nine years. \nSohyun An is a Professor of Social Studies Education in the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education at Kennesaw State University. Her teaching and research centers on issues of race\, war\, migration\, and imperialism within the context of social studies education. She is a founding member of Asian American Voices for Education\, a grassroots collective in Georgia with a mission to advance K-12 Asian American studies and ethnic studies in public schools. Prior to migration to the US\, she taught secondary social studies in South Korea. \nPresented by Teach Asian American Stories and AAPI New Jersey.

SUMMARY:Disrupting Microaggressions Against Asian Americans: An Anti-Bias Workshop for Educators in Montclair\, NJ
DESCRIPTION:Join educators and Teach Asian American Stories Ambassadors Dr. Darrell DeTample\, and Raymund Mantes to learn how to identify and combat anti-Asian bias in the classroom and in our schools. \nIn this workshop\, educators from all disciplines come together to deepen their understanding of their AAPI students. Together\, we explore the complex history and multifaceted identity of the AAPI community\, unpack shared experiences and stories\, counter harmful stereotypes and misconceptions\, and address the troubling issue of anti-Asian hate. Educators will leave with a better understanding of the AAPI diaspora\, narratives\, and lived experiences\, empowering them to create more inclusive and culturally responsive educational spaces. \nLunch will be provided.
