SUMMARY:Theater Performance: Dear John
DESCRIPTION:It’s 2011\, and a recent college graduate is trying to move out of her mom’s house (with little hope and no prospects) when she receives a message from a mysterious stranger named John on Facebook. Dear John is a solo show based on a true story about what happens when a long-absent father finds his not-quite-adult daughter through a social networking website. Weaving together Facebook DMs\, recorded interviews\, and anecdotes of growing up undocumented in New York’s Chinatown\, Dear John is a coming of age story delightfully told by writer and performer Rachel Lin about the ways we try (and fail) to reach each other\, over and over again.

SUMMARY:Theater: From Trinity to Trinity
DESCRIPTION:Amaterasu Za\, New York’s only bilingual Japanese-English theater company\, presents the New York premiere of From Trinity to Trinity\, a powerful one-woman play based on the autobiographical writings of Kyoko Hayashi\, a survivor of the Nagasaki atomic bombing. The play follows Hayashi’s 1999 pilgrimage to the Trinity Site in New Mexico\, where the bomb that changed her life was first tested.\n\nPerformed by acclaimed actress Ako (Shogun\, God Said This\, Snow Falling on Cedars)\, this one-woman play is adapted from an English translation of Hayashi’s book by Eiko Otake (of Eiko & Koma). Ako’s performance—enhanced by evocative imagery and soundscape — offers an intimate yet universal meditation on trauma\, resilience\, remembrance\, and the stories nations tell themselves.\nOn August 9th\, 1945\, fourteen-year-old schoolgirl Kyoko Hayashi was sent to work at the Mitsubishi Munitions Factory and miraculously survived the blast only to endure radiation sickness and its painful after-effects for the next 73 years. Hayashi started writing in 1962 and became a leading literary voice for the Hibakusha\, those who survived the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. She published dozens of books\, articles\, stories\, and poems\, and won multiple literary awards. \nHer moving autobiographical short work\, From Trinity To Trinity\, about her 1999 pilgrimage to Trinity Site in New Mexico\, where the atomic bomb that would define her life was first tested\, was published in 2000 and translated into English by Eiko Otake of the performance artist duo Eiko & Koma (Station Hill Press\, 2010). In 2009\, Eiko reached out to the NY-based actress Ako (Shogun\, God Said This\, Snow Falling on Cedars\, and the founder of the Amaterasu Za theater company in NYC) suggested she perform it as a one-person play. It has been performed only twice\, in workshops at New York Theater Workshop in 2009 and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2010. They say that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it\, but how you remember the past and whose eyes you are seeing it through are just as important. \nIn this\, the 80th anniversary year of the 1945 atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, which coincides with the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camps throughout Germany that same year\, we are reminded of humanity’s boundless capacity for cruelty and destruction. Those who survived these catastrophes came away with perspectives that some expressed in art and others in literature or advocacy. Their voices were powerful\, and they deserve to be heard and even amplified again and again in this time when the news\, sadly\, seems to be filled once again with stories of violence\, indifference\, and nationalism. \n\nPerformed in English with Japanese subtitle translation.\nRunning time: approximately 45 minutes.

SUMMARY:Theater: GUT (굿) Act 2: Memoirs
DESCRIPTION:Memoirs (Act 2) is the second act of GUT (굿)\, a three-act autobiographical hybrid/dance work and the fifth and final installment of Soomi Kim’s series exploring mortality in Korean and Asian American lives. Act 2: Memoirs examine the complex legacy between a Korean American daughter and her immigrant father\, as she pieces together the history of a man she never truly knew. Set between 1950s postwar Korea and present-day America\, Memoirs traces a poetic journey through grief\, fragmented memory\, and complicated love—asking: how can we let go when grief is a knot of longing and regret? \nGUT (굿) Act 2: Memoirs (a work in progress) brings together a stellar company of 4 AAPI performers led by director and co-developer Peter Kim. The piece was first developed at Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor residency in 2023 and continued its journey at BAM’s 2024 Artist Residency\, followed by the Mercury Store in 2025. This production is made possible by support from The NYC Women’s Fund for Media\, Music and Theatre by the City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment in association with The New York Foundation for the Arts. \nCreated by Soomi Kim. SUMMARY:Theater: A Meal
DESCRIPTION:Created by critically acclaimed multidisciplinary artist duo Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya\, A Meal is multi-sensorial live performance that is part-ritual\, part-celebration\, part-installation\, and part-dinner. Commissioned by HERE and co-produced with LEIMAY\, A Meal explores our deep connection with food—where it comes from\, what we eat\, and who we share it with. \nThis two and a half hour immersive experience takes audiences through a series of vignettes across HERE’s two-story building\, where they’ll eat together\, witness performances by mythological creatures\, and encounter offering songs and evocative sound/video movement installations.
