SUMMARY:Transcendence
DESCRIPTION:Fou Gallery is pleased to present Transcendence\, a group exhibition featuring Tianshu Zhang (张天舒)\, Tao Xian(陶显)\, and Gloria Fan Duan(樊段晓春)\, on view from July 11 through September 5\, 2026. \nAs in the philosophy of the I-Ching [易经]\, the world is not an empty abstraction\, but a living structure of patterns through which all things transform. At a moment when attention is increasingly pulled outward by speed\, image\, and instability\, Transcendence turns inward\, inviting viewers to explore within for the subtle flow of energy that connects body\, mind\, and the natural world. \nBringing together painting and sculpture\, the exhibition considers abstraction not as a rejection of form\, but as a way of approaching what cannot be fully represented: spirit\, dream\, memory\, and the quiet forces that shape both human and natural existence. Through bodies\, imagined organisms\, and reconstructed botanical forms\, Transcendence explores the traces of inner energy moving between consciousness and the unconscious\, creating a path for viewers to enter a realm of inner light\, meditation\, and spiritual perception. \nFor Tianshu Zhang\, painting emerges from the threshold between dream and embodiment. Drawing inspiration from the imperceptible yet constant flow of Qi\, her paintings seek a balance between silhouette-like structures and fluid movement. Through layered brushwork\, Zhang evokes the body in abstraction\, where flesh\, spine\, and inner currents appear only partially\, as if sensing the presence of energy moving within. The body becomes a vessel through which consciousness moves between memory\, desire\, vulnerability\, and transformation. \nTao Xian approaches this spiritual interiority through the imagined life of nature. Drawing from Daoist thought\, Jungian psychology\, and organic forms\, she creates luminous semi-abstract paintings that occupy a space between organism and inner landscape. In works inspired by deep-sea plants and imagined botanical forms\, Tao allows imagination to become a mode of perception\, suggesting a silent energy shared between the individual soul and the larger universe. The visible traces of nature become vessels for psychic and spiritual life\, where the boundary between self and world remains fluid. \nGloria Fan Duan extends the exhibition’s inquiry into nature\, perception\, and unseen forces through a practice situated at the intersection of art\, science\, and technology. Conceived during NARS Foundation (Brooklyn\, New York)\, An And Foundation (Wassaic\, New York) and Fou Gallery’s Tulum Residency (Mexico)\, the series presented in this exhibition combines cast resin and glass flowers\, leaves\, and stems with handmade vessels\, assembling them into sculptural installations inspired by Japanese ikebana. Through mediation\, preservation\, and deliberate arrangement\, Duan reconstructs nature in translucent botanical forms that hover between specimen and offering\, garden and laboratory\, occupying a threshold between existence and non-existence. No longer living plants yet still carrying the trace of organic life\, these works offer a material counterpart to Zhang’s bodily energies and Tao’s imagined spiritual organisms. The processes of preservation\, reproduction\, and arrangement become forms of meditation\, suggesting that the artificial may also serve as a vessel for care\, ecological memory\, and spiritual attention. \nThrough the body\, the imagined organism\, and the reconstructed garden\, form becomes a threshold through which inner energy\, memory\, and spiritual perception may appear. Rather than presenting transcendence as escape\, the exhibition understands it as a process of attunement\, a way of sensing what exists beneath the visible. Installed as a quiet and immersive environment\, Transcendence invites viewers to move through the works as they might move through a breath cycle\, a dream\, or a moment of meditation\, entering a space where the visible world opens onto its unseen dimensions. In this suspended space\, transcendence becomes a quiet practice of returning to the energies that bind the self to the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Who Brings What to the Table at NYC Jewelry Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:Who Brings What to the Table: a jewelry exhibition & interactive dinner-party-style reception\, featuring 5 artists and a live performance.\n\n\nCurated by Rho Tang\, Who Brings What to the Table: Bridging Stories Through Contemporary Jewelry unites a group of artists in an intimate “dinner party” setting\, where jewelry itself becomes the conversation piece. Serving as both exhibition and interactive gathering\, the event features five jewelry artists: Suyu Chen\, Rho Tang\, Zhipeng Wang\, Dongyi Wu\, and Danni Xu\, with a performance at the opening reception (Wednesday\, 5:30-7:30pm) inviting visitors to engage directly with the works. \n  \n\n\nSuyu Chen\nSuyu Chen\, a contemporary jewelry artist and educator originally from southern China\, is now based in Rochester\, New York\, United States. She earned her MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology\, where she currently teaches as adjunct faculty. Chen also holds a BA from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China\, and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States and the Kunstuniversität Linz in Austria. Her work explores the intersection of traditional metalsmithing and unconventional materials\, often combining plastic\, found objects\, and precious metals to challenge the boundaries of jewelry as both adornment and cultural objects. Chen’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including US\, Spain\, Italy\, Finland\, China and Germany. \n  \nRho Tang\nRho Tang is a contemporary jewelry artist based in Beacon\, NY. She obtained bachelor’s degrees in architecture and fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and a master’s degree in urban planning from Architectural Association in London. With a background in architecture\, her work emphasizes the exploration of spatial relationships\, creating visual language that incorporates elements such as repetition\, juxtaposition\, and hierarchy. Her current series investigates the multifaceted concept of identity\, focusing on the evolving roles of women in modern society\, the complexities of navigating Asian identity in a Western context\, and the notion of self-identity as an artist. Since 2018\, Rho has exhibited work in art galleries and museums throughout Europe\, Asia\, and America. In 2025\, her work was selected for Schmuck in Munich\, Germany. \n  \nZhipeng Wang\nZhipeng Wang is a Chinese contemporary jewellery artist working between China and Germany. Rooted in China’s material heritage and shaped by a cross-cultural perspective\, he uses materials such as tea and jade to explore identity\, memory\, and materiality. He earned BFA in Jewellery Art and Design from the China Academy of Art and joined Jewellery Class at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich under Professor Karen Pontoppidan\, completing a Freie Kunst Diplom in 2024. Zhipeng has exhibited internationally\, he has received major honours including the Grand Prize of BKV-Prize 2024 (Munich)\, First Prize at the Giancarlo Montebello Award (Milan)\, Winner of the Preziosa Young Competition 2021 (Florence)\, and a Special Award at the 30th Legnica International Jewellery Competition (Poland). His works are represented in public collections such as the Auckland Museum (New Zealand)\, Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus Hanau (Germany)\, Le Arti Orafe (Italy)\, and the China Academy of Art Museum. \n  \nDongyi Wu\nDongyi Wu is a Chinese-born contemporary jewelry artist based in Houston\, TX. She holds an MFA in Metal and Jewelry Design from Rochester Institute of Technology; and a BA in Jewelry Art Design\, and a Dual Design in Fashion Design and Engineering from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology. Dongyi has completed residencies at numerous institutions including Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (Houston\, TX)\, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (Gatlinburg\, TN)\, Contemporary Craft (Pittsburg\, PA)\, and Baltimore Jewelry Center (Baltimore\, MD). Dongyi’s work has been exhibited worldwide\, including Schmuck 2018\, Joya Barcelona\, and seven solo shows including Taidekeskus Ita Gallery (Lappeenranta\, Finland) and A-Galerii (Tallinn\, Estonia). Her pieces have been featured in publications such as New Brooches: 400+ Contemporary Jewellery Designs and Chinese Contemporary Jewelry Design. Dongyi was a winner of the Preziosa Young Design Competition 2020\, and a finalist for the LEAP Award in 2019 \n  \nDanni Xu\nDanni Xu was born in China and currently resides in the United States. She holds an MFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA in Metalsmithing & Jewelry Design from Indiana University Bloomington. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Jewelry and Metal Arts at Pratt Munson. \nDanni’s work has been featured both nationally and internationally\, including Missing Memories in Lille\, France\, Profile’19 in Sydney\, Australia\, Beijing International Jewellery Art Exhibition in Beijing\, China\, Jewelry and Nature in Porto\, Portugal\, Mulan – New Age Chinese Art Jewelry at New York City Jewelry Week\, NY\, Heart + Flowers in Brooklyn\, NewYork\, Timeless Cure (invitational) in Chicago\, IL as well as traveling exhibition Surface Matters: Grit or Gloss from The Enamelist Society. As an artist and a designer\, Danni conducts research that centers on exploring the capacity of jewelry to establish connections across time and space. \n  \n\n\nNYCJW25: November 17 – 23\, 2025\nEach November\, NYC Jewelry Week proudly presents ‘The Week\,’ a 7-day celebration dedicated to the art of jewelry. This annual festival invites a global audience to explore the world of jewelry through a dynamic mix of in-person and virtual experiences\, spanning New York City and beyond. Our hybrid program features virtual programs streamed on YouTube alongside immersive on-site activities. \nIn-person\, NYC Jewelry Week brings together leading figures in the jewelry industry to curate extraordinary experiences\, including exhibitions\, exclusive shopping opportunities\, and retail collaborations.
