SUMMARY:2026 CUNY Asian American Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Promoting the artistic visual talents and stimulate communication among CUNY filmmakers.\n\n\nSince 2004\, the CUNY Asian American Film Festival (AAFF) has celebrated the creativity and vision of student filmmakers from across the City University of New York. Having awarded over $16\,000 in cash prizes over the years\, the festival promotes the artistic talents of CUNY students and fosters meaningful connections among peers from campuses including BMCC\, City College\, Brooklyn College\, Hunter College\, Lehman College\, College of Staten Island\, Queens College\, NYC College of Technology\, and the CUNY Graduate Center. \nOn the evening of the festival\, the winners ($250 prize) and runners-up ($150 prize) will remain anonymous until after a screening of selected films. Following the screening\, we will host an awards ceremony and a Q&A session with the filmmakers. \nWe look forward to seeing you on Friday to congratulate our latest group of talented CUNY student filmmakers! \nFestival Program \nDocumentary Film\nShane Gomes (Hunter College)\nLetters to BDesh\nThree young Bengali New Yorkers write letters to Bangladesh exploring distant and recent memories\, and imaginations of their beautifully complex ancestral land. \nFiction Film\nClaro de los Reyes (Brooklyn College)\nSands Street\nUnder a moonlit sky in an unwelcoming 1940s Brooklyn\, a Filipino steward and Black welder develop an intimate connection filled with hope\, solidarity\, and tenderness. \nDocumentary Film\nGurveer Singh (Borough of Manhattan Community College)\nChardi Kala (ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ) | The Journey of an MMA Fighter\nSunder Singh is a Sikh MMA fighter navigating the balance between faith\, identity\, and the brutal world of combat sports. “Chardi Kala” (ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ) represents a mindset of relentless optimism and resilience\, something Sunder carries with him both inside and outside the cage. Through training\, reflection\, and personal struggle\, this documentary explores what it means to stay grounded in your beliefs while chasing greatness in a demanding sport. \nFiction Film\nHanju David Youk (Queensborough Community College)\n“Bint\, Bat” بنت בת – Short Film from Jerusalem\nTwo girls in the holy land. Even though one was Jew and the other was Muslim\, their friendship was golden. However the world was not so kind. \nFiction Film\nWendy Cong Zhao (Hunter College)\nA Grieving Heart\nAn immigrant woman examines her past in the wake of her American ex-boyfriend’s death. The film explores how love and loss impact the ways the woman confronts her immigrant identity\, memories\, insecurities\, and regrets.

History\, re-rooting\, storytelling\, and collectivity!\n\n\nThis showcase is an opportunity for youth ages 16-22 to share the incredible historical and oral history research they have conducted this past year at the Localized History Project. Structured as a “science fair” style presentation with interactive booths\, artwork\, zine-making\, and storytelling\, we invite young people\, adults\, teachers\, community members\, activists\, organizers\, academic\, and friends to join us in this space at anytime between 6-9pm\, but with a keynote address at 7:30pm.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Immigration Detention Inc.: Deirdre Colon and Nancy Hiemstra in conversation with Gregory Donovan
DESCRIPTION:The trio of scholars will discuss “Immigration Detention Inc.: The Big Business of Locking Up Migrants” — the new book authored by Dr. Conlon and Dr. Hiemstra. \nNancy Hiemstra and a panel of scholars discuss her new co-authored book (with Deirdre Conlon)\, a damning exposé of the ways immigration detention generates income while those detained are starved\, sickened\, and exploited\, and how that profit making is driving the explosive growth of the U.S. detention system today. \nThe United States has the most extensive immigration detention system in the world\, expanding from a capacity of less than 5\,000 detainees per day in the 1980s to 52\,000 by 2019\, and even higher today. While the most vociferous anti-immigrant rhetoric may be attributed to Republicans\, US detention infrastructure has grown exponentially regardless of the political party in power as reports of abysmal detention conditions pile up. \nNancy Hiemstra is Associate Professor of Women’s\, Gender\, & Sexuality Studies at Stony Brook. A political geographer whose research focuses on US immigration enforcement policies\, she is co-author of Immigration Detention Inc: The Big Business of Locking Up Migrants\, author of Detain and Deport: The Chaotic U.S. Immigration Enforcement Regime\, and co-editor of Intimate Economies of Immigration Detention. \nDeirdre Conlon is Associate Professor of Geography based at the University of Leeds. A critical geographer working in the US and Britain\, her work focuses on how immigration and border controls are proliferating as they are monetized. She is co-author of Immigration Detention Inc: The Big Business of Locking Up Migrants\, and co-editor of Intimate Economies of Immigration Detention and Carceral Spaces: Mobility and Agency in Imprisonment and Migrant Detention.

DESCRIPTION:Christine Bacareza Balance presents ongoing research and writing from her book project\, Making Sense of Martial Law.\n\n\nProf. Christine Balance\, the 2024 CUNY Thomas Tam Visiting Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center\, will present ongoing research and writing from her book project\, Making Sense of Martial Law. In it\, she studies what the diverse and contradictory poetics of Philippine martial law (1972-1986) perform and reveal about authoritarianism and cultural memory\, as illustrated by both U.S.- and Philippines-based performances and productions. Making Sense of Martial Law also aims to illuminate important facets of the relationship between art and politics in dictatorships across the globe. \nBalance will offer a short presentation addressing the book’s main arguments\, themes\, and structure\, and her research & writing process\, as a way to open up discussion with others working in the fields of performance studies\, cultural studies\, transnational American studies\, Filipino/Filipino American studies\, and Southeast Asian studies\, as well as those interested in bridging critical & creative writing\, scholarly & public humanities projects.
