SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: In Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Who is in our corner when we need help?\nWho do we call on when we are down?\nWho backs us up when we are cornered?\nIn Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond explores the personal and professional support that artists of Asian descent received during and after the Asian American Art Movements. This companion exhibition to Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) at New York University’s 80WSE Gallery\, invites five artists of the three key art collectives and organizations featured in Legacies to show alongside five non-Asian American artists who supported their work and growth over the years. These relationships range from recently made friendships to lifelong partnerships and even marriage: Kathleen Foster joins Ching Ming Cheung; Charles Luce joins Helen Oji; Howardena Pindell joins Arlan Huang; Shellyne Rodriguez joins Tomie Arai; and Arleen Schloss joins Nina Kuo. To highlight AAAC’s collection and its ongoing solidarity-building\, In Our Corner presents five works by non-Asian American artists from the collection\, Columbia Fiero\, Kitty Katz\, Donald Lipski\, Eva Mantell\, and Sepp Seitz. As the hosting institution for In Our Corner\, Think!Chinatown’s commission of Black Gotham’s Grand Rising and its inclusion in the show demonstrates the organization’s ongoing exchange and collaboration with communities of color. Over the past 15 years\, Kerri’s work has focused on the past\, present\, and future of the immigrant neighborhoods of New York City’s Lower East Side\, Chinatown\, Little Italy and the Bowery. \nYin Kong 邝海音 is a founder and Executive Director of Think!Chinatown\, a community-based designer and curator living and working in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Think!Chinatown is the culmination of her work in urban design\, museum\, culinary & cultural instruction\, and community engagement. \nDaniel McPhee is Executive Director of the Urban Design Forum\, an independent membership organization confronting the defining issues facing New York City’s built environment. From our favorites on the radio to the conversations woven over them\, our living rooms ring with the sounds and stories of our families. \nBringing together music and oral history\, Rochelle Hoi-Yiu Kwan (aka YiuYiu 瑶瑶) will gather us for an intimate living room listening through the Chinatown Records 華埠錄音 archive. Pulling from over 30 record collections inherited from her family and neighbors\, we’ll listen together to songs that have long filled Chinatown living rooms – and the histories and memories that come with them.  \nRooted in the belief that we can all be DJs and oral historians\, we invite you to bring a favorite song of your own to share and soundtrack our living room with us\, whether on a vinyl record or online. DESCRIPTION:Warm up with an intimate musical experience that calls on healing and wellness practices rooted in traditional Chinese medicine!\n\n\nWarm up for the cold season ahead with an intimate musical and healing experience by treya lam and Dr Elizabeth So! \nAt this communal gathering\, treya lam’s multi-instrumental and vocal performances will draw from “otherland”\, a multidisciplinary grief and regeneration ritual that utilizes song\, movement\, film and storytelling to explore loss as a catalyst for radical empathy. Representing People\, Place and Culture\, a thought-provoking urban planning-focused exhibition exploring the unresolved debate of cultural representation in Chinatown’s built environment through extensive research\, photographs from Chinatowns across North America\, and artwork by artist John Lee. The exhibition is co-curated by T!C Director Yin Kong and architectural historian Kerri Culhane\, and designed with fwd | A+U\, Farzana Gandhi Design Studio\, and Pentagram as part of Van Alen Institute’s program Design Sprints. \nIn 2024\, the NYC Economic Development Corporation launched the Chinatown Connections project which includes the redesign of Kimlau Square and creation of a “Chinatown Welcome Gateway”. This city project has reignited the conversation about cultural representation. In Chinatowns around the world\, gateways\, known as paifang–along with lanterns\, dragons and the ubiquitous color red–present a generic notion of Chinese culture for public consumption. Are these stereotypes or symbols of Chinatown?
