SUMMARY:A Legacy Continued: Recent Acquisitions to the Asia Society Museum Collection
DESCRIPTION:A Legacy Continued features recent acquisitions received from Sandra Ferry Rockefeller and Hope Aldrich in honor of their parents\, John D. Rockefeller 3rd and Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller. These gifts were originally part of Mr. and Mrs. Rockefeller’s personal collection\, and this display celebrates their homecoming. These pieces complement other works within the museum collection\, some of which are included in this exhibition. Together\, they offer greater opportunities for comparative studies among them. \nTwo Chola bronze statues of Hindu deities from Hope Aldrich—a Shiva and a Satyabhama—add to the already magnificent group of Indian Chola bronzes in the collection. From Sandra Ferry\, two lovely gilt bronze Chinese Buddhist statues augment the museum’s existing Chinese Buddhist sculptures\, while the addition of three Thai works furthers the collection’s strength in Southeast Asian sculpture. SUMMARY:Busy\, Busy Towns: Moving Images of a Changing Asia
DESCRIPTION:This selection of works from the Asia Society Museum Collection explore how rapidly evolving cultural\, political\, and ecological issues have shaped urban landscapes across contemporary Asia\, and in particular China\, Indonesia\, and Taiwan. The exhibition presents seven works featuring the artists Song Dong\, Chen Shaoxiong\, Tromarama\, and Chen Chieh-jen. The innovative range of styles implemented to produce these moving images—through stop-motion animation of woodcuts\, ink painting\, or embroidery—among other methods\, speaks to the creative depth and diversity of the region. The artists explore the dynamic energy of cities\, whether fueled by consumerism and gentrification or by collapsing industries and environmental degradation. Actively reflecting on the regeneration of cityscapes and the subsequent impact on urban lives\, these works initiate a renewed dialogue with the current exhibition\, (Re)Generations: Rina Bannerjee\, Bryon Kim\, and Howardena Pindell amid the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection.

DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents Kyoko Kagawa Rarities\, a series of five remarkable films starring the beloved Japanese actress\, in partnership with Anthology Film Archives\, from August 13-16\, 2026. \nFarewell to the Highland Station\nNobuo Nakagawa\, Japan\, 1951\, 35mm\, 76 min.\nIn Japanese with English subtitles. \nA botanical researcher (Michitaro Mizushima) visits a tuberculosis sanatorium in the highlands. Collecting plants in the area for his research\, he falls in love with the nurse in white (Kyoko Kagawa). \nProduced quickly to capitalize on the massive success of Minoru Obata’s hit song of the same title\, within the genre trappings of the “kayo eiga” (song film)\, Farewell to the Highland Station elevates to the sublime under the masterful direction of Nobuo Nakagawa. Known in most histories exclusively for his classics of the horror genre\, legendary critic Shiguehiko Hasumi has explained that Nakagawa is indistinguishable without this film. Instead\, he finds himself inhabiting the space with a cohort (Ryo Kase\, Azusa Takehana) at a crossroads in their lives. Together\, and with the elders at the neighborhood bar (Kagawa\, Sansei Shiomi)\, shared space and time leads to breakthroughs in character. \nThe debut feature of Chihiro Ikeda\, a student (and later collaborator) of Kiyoshi Kurosawa\, Tokyo Rendezvous unites new talent with veterans of the industry. Set on the same island within the Seto Inland Sea\, Five Sisters interrogates marriage in a contemporary Japan amidst the lively and dynamic sisterhood of the Hinata family. \nWith Kinuyo Tanaka as Michi\, the eldest\, and a great Yoko Sugi as the spirited Kuniko\, Kagawa plays Mie\, the youngest and the heart of the distinguished ensemble. Why should Shozo pay heed to his new wife or his ex when the sweet purrs of Lily the cat are what makes his heart flutter? \nThe film’s titular quadrangle\, like a prism\, magnifies the competing impulses towards modernity\, tradition\, and escape. Popular comic veteran Hisaya Morishige plays the hapless Shozo\, while screen legend Isuzu Yamada plays kimono-clad ex-wife Shinako. Bursting out of a closet in full beach attire\, Kagawa is introduced as the mambo-crazed moga (modern girl) Fukuko.
