SUMMARY:This Was Funnier in China: Stand-Up Comedy in China with Jesse Appell
DESCRIPTION:Jesse Appell and This Was Funnier in China book cover \nJoin us for an evening of laughter\, storytelling\, and cultural insights with bilingual comedian and author Jesse Appell\, to celebrate the launch of his new book\, This Was Funnier in China. As part of his book tour\, he brings his new English-language comedy show\, This Show Was Funnier in China\, to Asia Society. The show blends humor with personal stories from his life as a Chinese comedian’s apprentice\, along with selected readings from the book. \nHis journey began with a Fulbright Fellowship to Beijing\, where he apprenticed under Master Ding Guangquan to learn the traditional Chinese comedy art of Xiangsheng (相声) — a traditional Chinese comedic art form known for its witty dialogue\, wordplay\, and rapid-fire banter between performers. Often compared to Western stand-up or sketch comedy\, Xiangsheng has been a cornerstone of Chinese humor for centuries. Over the next decade\, Jesse became a key figure in China’s modern comedy scene\, appearing on popular TV shows like Huan Le Xiju Ren (欢乐 喜剧人) and creating viral content that has garnered over 500 million views worldwide. \nFollowing the show\, stay for an engaging audience Q&A and discussion about comedy\, culture\, and what it means to find humor across borders. \n$15 Members\, $25 Nonmembers. Students and Seniors: Use coupon SENSTU at check out. \nThis Was Funnier in China will be available for sale during the event\, with a book signing to follow.

SUMMARY:Screening and Talk: On Healing Land\, Birds Perch: Healing From the Trauma of the Vietnam War
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate screening of On Healing Land\, Birds Perch\, a powerful short documentary by Vietnamese-born filmmaker Naja Pham Lockwood. Through the lens of Eddie Adams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph Saigon Execution\, the film explores the lingering trauma of the Vietnam War and the complex journey toward reconciliation — 50 years after the fall of Saigon. Lockwood\, herself a refugee who fled Vietnam in 1975\, brings together voices from both sides of the conflict: the children of the executed\, the daughter of the executioner\, and those whose families were caught in the crossfire. Their stories\, raw and deeply personal\, reveal the emotional scars that transcend generations and borders. \nThis screening is more than a cinematic experience. Following the film\, Naja Lockwood will join us for a live Q&A to discuss the making of the documentary and the importance of confronting inherited trauma through storytelling.

SUMMARY:Emily Feng on Identity in Xi’s China
DESCRIPTION:Conformity is a prized commodity in the Xi Jinping era. And for those who don’t conform — to the Party narrative\, or to a narrow definition of what it means to be “Chinese” — the state attempts to conform them\, through pressure\, censorship or detention. \nThis battle over identity in China is the core theme of Let Only Red Flowers Bloom: Identity and Belonging in Xi Jinping’s China (Crown\, March 2025)\, a reported investigation of state oppression and grassroots push-back\, from award-winning NPR correspondent Emily Feng. Based on her journalism on the ground\, the book narrates the stories of varied individuals in China who run against the grain of society: a Uyghur family split apart by detention camps; human rights lawyers fighting to defend civil liberties; a teacher from Inner Mongolia fighting for his mother tongue; and a Hong Kong fugitive trying to find a new home.
