DESCRIPTION:Bengali Mental Health Movement is partnering with Apicha CHC and Amader Dawat to present a special Alaap for Queer Bengalis in NYC! \n\n\n\n\nThe Bengali Mental Health Movement is partnering with Apicha Community Health Center and Amader Dawat to present a special Alaap event in July for the queer Bengali community in New York City. \nDuring this session\, two queer Bengali facilitators will hold space for participants to discuss their lived experiences of being Bengali and queer\, coping with challenges the community faces\, and engaging creative and holistic approaches to growing connection\, support\, and community. \nDinner will be served as well as giveaways\, courtesy of Apicha! \nMeet our facilitators: \n\nRobbie Ahmed\, music producer\, writer\, and educator\nSadaaf Mamoon\, MHC-LP\, psychotherapist\n\nWhile this session is facilitated by individuals with mental health training\, Alaap is not group therapy and is not a replacement for therapy or other mental health treatment. Alaap is a space for conversation\, reflection\, and community\, where lived experience is valued\, and everyone brings wisdom. \nThe Pride Alaap is only open to people who identify as queer and Bengali.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of “Elijah”\, a coming-out story of a Bengali-American trans man. Followed by a Q+A with filmmaker\, Razid Season!\n\n\nSypnosis: A South Asian Muslim taxi driver faces the reality that the American Dream may never be his. Grueling hours\, rude customers\, a collapse in medallion values\, and suicides among fellow drivers continually chip away at his hope for the future. Against this backdrop\, crisis spills into his family as his child comes out as a transgender man. His relationship with his transgender son challenges his past views on LGBTQ issues\, forcing him to confront prejudice in his community to protect the child he loves.\n\nWe’ll be screening this beautiful film\, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker\, Razid. Refreshments will be provided. \nAbout Us:\nRazid Season: Born in Abu Dhabi & raised in Dhaka\, Razid Season is a Bengali filmmaker based in New York. He is the founder of a non-profit\, Image Maker Films Inc. Besides\, he has worked as a freelance project evaluator for POV. He was an invited jury at the Plural+ Youth Film Festival 2022\, run by UNAOC and IOM. He has received several awards for his films\, including the Lawrence and Danielle Nyman award (2018 & 2019)\, the Best Director award from SAIFF 2020\, Honourable Mention from Columbus Jewish Film Festival 2020\, and ISA Los Angeles. His films have premiered at the 43rd Asian American Film Festival in New York\, the Buffalo International Film Festival\, the Williamsburg International Film Festival\, and the Los Angeles Polish Film Festival. His film premiered on CUNY TV\, Yiddishkayt Initiative\, and The Archeological Channel’s web streaming. His film Kaddish ranked as one of the top 10 independent short fiction works by Cinema Daily US. Razid is interested in making films that deal with humanitarian issues\, and he wants his films to be a tool to advocate for those underprivileged communities whose voices are not heard in the mainstream media. \nAmader Dawat is a Bangladeshi and Bengali queer and trans led grassroots collective based in NYC. Rooted in radical care and the tradition of dawaats (gatherings)\, we aim to foster community\, connection\, and empowerment by standing with all oppressed people. We strive to build celebratory and safe spaces by synergizing arts\, culture\, and political education. Our core mission is queer liberation–we firmly believe no one is free until we are all free. \nApicha Community Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center. Their mission is to provide high quality\, whole person\, and compassionate care delivered in a welcoming manner. \nDesis Rising Up and Moving is a multi-generational\, membership based organization of over 1\,800 low-wage South Asian immigrant workers\, youth\, and families organizing for social and economic justice in New York City. DRUM organizes low-income\, largely Muslim\, undocumented South Asian immigrant families and youth through base-building and membership services\, leadership development\, campaigns for policy change\, and movement building.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate community and storytelling with “Joyeeta” — a night full of joy and connection! ✨\n\n\nJoin Apicha Community Health Center and LAAL NYC for a special community screening of Joyeeta (Victorious)\, a documentary uplifting the stories of Bangladeshi immigrant women navigating life\, language\, isolation\, gender roles\, and resilience in New York City! The film highlights the healing power of community and culturally rooted mental health support. \nJoyeeta (Victorious) was inspired by Laal’s 2020 Mental Health Initiative\, which studied over 60 Bangladeshi immigrant womxn in the Bronx\, NYC to understand their mental health conditions exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the lens of Samsun Chowdury (Farida) and Nasima Alam\, the documentary unveils the challenges faced by immigrant Bengali womxn as they navigate life in a new country\, language barriers\, social isolation\, gender roles\, and poverty in the United States. Joyeeta aims to foster open dialogue on access to culturally appropriate mental health services\, reduce stigma surrounding it\, and showcase the deep healing power of community. \nThe evening includes a featured performance by Bangladeshi artist\, Niha\, and a panel discussion with the aunties from the film and members of the LAAL’s and Apicha’s team\, creating space for shared stories\, reflection\, and collective healing! \nAbout LAAL \nLaal supports Bangladeshi women in the Bronx and Queens through wellness programs\, literacy\, arts\, and community‑building.
