Augustine\, Associate Professor of Modern Japanese and East Asian History\, Kyushu University\, Japan \nModerator: Ruth Barraclough\, Korea Foundation Associate Professor of the Social Sciences\, Department of History\, Columbia University \nHistorian Matthew R. Augustine will discuss his recently published book\, From Japanese Empire to American Hegemony: Koreans and Okinawans in the Resettlement of Northeast Asia (title in the WEAI “Studies” series)\, a comprehensive study of the dynamic and often contentious relationship between migration and border controls in U.S.-occupied Japan\, Korea\, and the Ryukyu Islands in the wake of WWII. Augustine’s book examines the American interlude as a closely integrated\, transregional history. \nSpeaker’s Bio: Matthew R. Augustine is Associate Professor of Modern Japanese and East Asian History at Kyushu University. He has written articles in English and Japanese on the history of military occupations and decolonization in East Asia after WWII. His latest book\, From Japanese Empire to American Hegemony: Koreans and Okinawans in the Resettlement of Northeast Asia (University of Hawai’i\, 2023)\, was nominated as a finalist for the 2025 Modern Japan History Association Book Prize. \nThis event is hosted by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute.

DESCRIPTION:Yang Shuangzi’s novel\, Taiwan Travelogue\, is a penetrating analysis of identity issues in Taiwan.\n\n\nSpeakers: \nYang Shuang-zi\, author \nLin King\, writer and translator \nModerator: \nAndrew J. Nathan\, Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science\, Department of Political Science\, Columbia University \nYang Shuang-zi’s novel Taiwan Travelogue\, translated by Lin King\, received the U.S. National Book Award for Translated Literature in 2024 and the Baifang Schell Book Prize for Translated Literature from the Asia Society in 2025. The story follows two young women\, one Japanese and one Taiwanese\, in 1930s Japan-ruled Taiwan. Presented as a lighthearted look at food culture and railway travel\, the novel dives deep into themes of colonial power imbalance\, political identity\, linguistic erasure\, and interpersonal relationships. \nFor non-Columbia affiliates\, registration is required to access the Morningside campus.
