SUMMARY:Community Safety\, Carceral Design\, and Dreaming Otherwise
DESCRIPTION:Building on years of organizing\, this conversation brings together artists\, organizers\, and community members to examine the impact of the Borough-Based Jail Plan (BBJP) in New York City\, with a focus on the skyscraper jail being constructed in Chinatown. Situating the project within a broader landscape of mass incarceration and displacement—from the police takeover of Park Row to the expanding carceral reach in Chinatown—we ask: what does community safety mean and who gets to define it? In place of a jail\, what else could be here? \nThe program explores the role of artists and cultural workers in the aestheticization of carceral systems through design\, and how art can obscure the violence of incarceration even as it can also serve as a tool of resistance. We invite participants to reflect on what it means to refuse participation in carceral design and to imagine alternative futures grounded in care\, collective well-being\, and worlds beyond punishment.

DESCRIPTION:In this opening conversation\, Mei Lum and Diane Wong will revisit the origins of W.O.W—from their early kitchen table conversations to its evolution into a community arts initiative that centers women\, queer\, non-binary\, and trans Asian youth as stewards of Chinatown’s creative culture. Grounded in personal stories and collective memory\, this dialogue invites us to pause and to consider how spaces like W.O.W. speak to the possibility of a neighborhood defined by people rather than by profit\, where value is measured through cultural continuity and collective belonging rather than speculative capital. The conversation also opens up questions about the tensions and possibilities of doing cultural work in a moment shaped by ongoing struggles over land\, safety\, and displacement—and how we might imagine the next decade together. \nThe conversation will be moderated by W.O.W.’s youth leaders and alumni. DESCRIPTION:W.O.W. 2026 Fire Horse Puppet Artbuild Shifts\n\n\nHappy New Year!  \n\n\nWe’re inviting community members to help bring our Fire Horse puppet to life! \nThe workshop will take place in W.O.W.’s basement studio (26 Mott St) on Sunday 1/18 and Sunday 1/25. Due to the limited size of our basement space\, each shift has 8 spots available.\n\n\nPlease choose at least one shift that works for you.  Sign-ups are first come\, first served.\n\n\n\nJoin us *THIS* Sunday January 18th from 1-5pm for our first horse puppet art build session with multidisciplinary artist Elsa Saade! You can register for hourly slot sign-ups for both 1/18 and 1/25 here! We can’t wait to bring our horse puppet to life with you 🙂 Our horse puppet will be making its debut on March 1st as part of an alternative people’s parade to the annual NYC Lunar New Year parade. SUMMARY:Public Opening Launch of The Borough Based Liberation Project (BBLP)
DESCRIPTION:A series of neighborhood events and interventions to collectively vision abolition\, climate justice\, migrant justice\, and housing futures\n\n\nThe Borough Based Liberation Project is a series of neighborhood cultural events and interventions to collectively vision abolition\, climate justice\, migrant justice\, and housing futures in New York City. For the month of September\, our project will activate this storefront to serve as a centralized hub for our organizing. As our communities converge\, learn\, and share together\, we will co-create an intersectional space that connects our local and global struggles to build solidarity and power. The project’s “Abolitionist Futures” theme will spotlight local resistance and link struggles for liberation from NYC to Palestine to indigenous territories in Abya Yala through art workshops\, exhibitions\, teach-ins\, gatherings\, performances\, and celebrations. \nChinatown has always been a site of resilience and resistance. For the past several years\, there has been a growing grassroots abolitionist movement against the city’s Borough-Based Jails plan set to expand NYC’s carceral facilities with four new jails at the cost of $15 billion. Adjacent to this building is the site of the new Chinatown jail\, set to become the tallest jail in the world.  When we fight for Chinatown\, we must know and celebrate the generations of dissenters and stewards that came before us. We seek to share stories from some of these movements and to imagine and grow structures of accountability and community justice within our intersecting struggles. \nWe hope this project will provide our communities with a nexus to oppose the political and economic forces that threaten to displace us from our homes\, even as funding for cages\, policing\, deportation\, resource extraction\, and war increases rampantly. We hope to encourage community members to join abolitionist struggles that oppose increased policing\, new and old jails\, prisons\, and detention centers\, prevent extraction in indigenous territories\, and support Palestinian liberation. \nThe Borough-based Liberation Project (BBLP) is a riff off of the Borough Based Jail Community Construction Office which is the “community engagement” office for the new Chinatown jailscraper located at 110 Walker Street. Our BBLP will be activated at 127 Walker Street. Our project will be located around the corner from the new jail site in which there is growing grassroots community resistance and opposition to\, and in fact the back wall of the space shares a wall with the new jail. \nThis project is facilitated by the Chinatown Art Brigade and the W.O.W. Project in collaboration with Black Indigenous Liberation Movement\, Borough Based Liberation Project\, Lavender Phoenix\, Dandelions NYC\, Asians 4 Palestine\, Protect Sunset Park\, and many others. \n

DESCRIPTION:Come share your favorite memories and experiences of preserving and celebrating Chinatown’s rich cultural heritage with us!\n\n\nShare Your Chinatown Placekeeping Story \nWe invite you to participate in reclaiming and reasserting our own narratives  through telling our own stories of resilience and resistance in Chinatown. In the face of rapid displacement of working class immigrant tenants and the ongoing construction of the tallest jail in the world\, we know that Chinatown has always been a site of resistance and resilience. \nAt this story gathering event we’ll be capturing people’s audio stories about Chinatown. Bring stories about your favorite places\, people\, sights and sounds of Chinatown – past and present. Share your hopes for a justice-oriented future for Chinatown. Excerpts of these recorded stories will be shared at a late September public event.
