DESCRIPTION:Art & Activism through Storytelling by Think!Chinatown\n\n\n‍ ‍ \nVisiting from NYC\, Think!Chinatown brings a selection of their storytelling projects to Toronto. These short films tease out complex stories of immigration journeys\, the birth of the Asian American movement\, and the everyday lives of Chinatown community members. \nFollowing the screening\, Executive Director of Think!Chinatown\, Yin Kong\, will discuss how storytelling is an essential part of T!C’s practice in their creative placekeeping work. Conversation will be moderated by Amy Wang of Long Time No See. \nWalk-ins are welcome\, with priority to those who have RSVP’d \nProgram: \n\n“Rocking the Boat” features pioneering advocate Yee Ling Poon\, following her time with Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) and the Basement Workshop.\n“Everyday Chinatown” is an animated shorts series that highlights objects found in everyday life in our community through animated artwork by Asian American artists and oral history recordings from Chinatown community members.\n“An Ode to our Generations: with Nobuko Miyamoto (Yellow Pearl)” is a short film featuring musician and “artivist” Nobuko Miyamoto. This is the third short film in a series inspired by the incredible work and foundation laid by Basement Workshop and Yellow Pearl more than 50 years ago\n“Grand Rising” is a fashion story inspired by Domingo Anthony\, one of the first Black landowners in New Netherland circa 1643 who lived in the south eastern corner of current day Chinatown.\n“Presenting Think!Chinatown” is a mini-documentary about Think!Chinatown’s work during a year of extraordinary growth with the support of an amazing team and dedicated volunteers.\n“Artisanal Chinatown: Tofu” is a mini-documentary produced by Think!Chinatown\, starring the tofu makers of Chinatown. Get a behind the scenes look at the artisanal process of making tofu\, and learn about the family legacies behind the tofu shops in the neighborhood.\n\nThis event is presented by Think!Chinatown in partnership with Long Time No See\, and sponsored by Reel Asian. \nThink!Chinatown is a creative placekeeping non-profit here to create intergenerational spaces of art\, joy\, belonging and connection in Manhattan’s Chinatown. At the intersection of arts\, storytelling and neighborhood engagement\, T!C works to grow community agency in our own neighborhood’s built environment as well as the narrative of our own stories. @thinkchinatown \nLong Time No See’s collective work seeks to connect the Chinatown community across generations\, remind us all that our current struggle is not a new one\, and we have much to learn from one another. Come and mingle\, it’s a party!\n\nABOUT THE BOOK \nEd Lin’s big-hearted\, eye-opening fifth installment in the fan-favorite Taipei Night Market series. \nJing-nan\, the owner of the most popular food stand in Taipei’s world-famous Shilin night market\, is hauling trash after a successful evening of hawking Taiwanese delicacies to tourists when he finds a corpse propped up against the dumpsters. The dead man turns out to be Juan Ramos\, a Philippine national who came to Taiwan for a job at a massive ZHD food processing plant. Jing-nan is haunted by Ramos’s story\, and by the heartbreak of his family\, who arrive in Taipei looking for answers. ZHD has a history of safety violations\, and activists have a hunch Ramos’s death might be part of a cover-up. Meanwhile\, Jing-nan’s gangster uncle\, Big Eye\, has his own mysterious\, probably illegal\, reasons for being concerned about what’s going on in ZHD. He pressures Jing-nan into a daring and risky mission: going undercover as a migrant laborer to get a job at the food processing plant and report back about the conditions inside. You will go home with your own paocai guan (traditional Chinese pickling jar) filled with veggies & spices.\n\n\n\nThere are two time slots for this workshop: Session 1 is from 11:00AM – 12:30PM | Session 2 is from 2:30-4PM \nJoin us at Think!Chinatown for a hands-on paocai 泡菜 workshop. We’re excited to welcome food writer and fermentation instructor Jess Eng (@goudatalks) to guide us through paocai\, a centuries-old style of lacto-fermenting pickling that remains a cornerstone of many kitchens across the Chinese diaspora today. \nTogether\, we’ll sample a selection of pickles and preserved vegetables sourced from neighborhood small businesses here in Chinatown. Along the way\, you’ll learn how these savory\, tangy creations are used in everyday cooking\, and discover brands and ingredients you can bring into your own kitchen directly from local shops. \nEach participant will assemble their own jar of lacto-fermented vegetables in a traditional paocai jar to take home\, and will leave with the knowledge to continue fermenting beyond the workshop. \nPlease note: \n\nThis workshop is designed for adults\, but children over the age of 10 are welcome if they are able to participate in a “grown-up” setting and if they are accompanied by an adult. DESCRIPTION:Step behind the scenes into the roots of Cantonese opera in America…\n\n\nCantonese opera has been part of New York’s story for more than 170 years. Beginning in the 1850s\, touring troupes performed in Chinatowns across the United States from San Francisco to Chicago\, New York\, and even Spokane (plus smaller cities in between). In 1853\, the 40-member Tong Hook Tong opera company appeared at New York’s Niblo’s Garden\, one of Manhattan’s grand theaters. By 1890\, Chinatown’s Doyers Street had its own dedicated opera house\, founded by cultural activist Wong Chin Foo. These performances helped build community through music\, theater\, and tradition that continues to resonate today. \nThis special evening brings that legacy to life: \n\nDr. Nancy Yunhwa Rao shares highlights from her acclaimed new book Inside Chinese Theater: Community and Artistry in 19th Century California and Beyond.\nCelebrated theater artist Ping Chong and his sister Betty Chong share stories of their family’s arrival in the 1930s as members of a Cantonese opera troupe from Canada and performing in New York.\nCantonese opera performer Mee Mee Chin shows vintage costumes from her collection and performs some classic opera songs.\n\nCopies of Dr. Rao’s book will be available for purchase and signing. \nTea and typical Chinese opera snacks will be served. \n* Pear Garden was China’s first royal performing arts academy dating to the Tang Dynasty. Today the phrase ‘Pear Garden’ is used to refer to Chinese opera in general and performers are commonly known as ‘Children/Disciples of the Pear Garden’ \nNancy Yunhwa Rao 饒韻華 is a Distinguished Professor of Music at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. Her book\, Inside Chinese Theater: Community and Artistry in 19th Century California and Beyond (Illinois University Press\, 2025)\, tells the story of iconic theater companies and the networks and migrations that made Chinese opera a part of North American cultures. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, Nancy Yunhwa Rao has produced award-winning research on a range of topics\, including gender and music\, sketch studies\, music modernism\, cultural fusion in music\, racial representations\, and the music history of early Chinese Americans. Rao’s earlier book\, Chinatown Opera Theater in North America (Illinois University Press\, 2017)\, received the Music in American Culture Award\, American Musicological Society; Lowens Book Award\, Society for American Music; and Book Award in Performance and Media\, Associations for Asian American Studies. In 2024\, Rao was named Honor Member of the American Musicological Society. \n  \nPing Chong 張家平 iis an internationally acclaimed interdisciplinary artist. Since 1972\, he created over 100 original works for the stage with the Ping Chong Company (now Pink Fang) in New York City\, and around the world. He is the recipient of two BESSIE awards\, two OBIE awards\, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award\, a Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellowship\, and the 2014 National Medal of Arts. Ping grew up in Manhattan Chinatown where he\, sister Betty Chong and their siblings all worked in the family’s two local restaurants and cafe. And\, according to Ping\, “My mom was a diva. My grandfather was a very famous Chinese opera director-librettist. My father was a director-librettist. My mother was performing in Vietnam in the late ’20s\, and my father was directing in Singapore and Malaysia in the ’20s.” \nMeeMee Chin 陳美美 began her Cantonese Opera journey in 2004 as a way to support the oldest Opera Club in Chinatown\, Manchee Benevolent Association. Chen\, a cultural pillar of New York’s Chinatown\, whose work bridged Asian traditions and American modern dance. Born in Shanghai\, raised in Taiwan\, and trained at Juilliard and NYU\, Chen came to New York in the 1970s and founded HT Chen & Dancers. He went on to create a professional dance company\, school\, and theater at 70 Mulberry Street\, making the Chen Dance Center a vital artistic hub in Chinatown for more than forty years. \nIn recognition of his contributions to the city’s cultural life\, he received the NYC Mayor’s Award for Arts and Culture and NYS Governor’s Arts Award. Chen also served as a board member of organizations including the Asian American Arts Alliance and CREATE in Chinatown/Think!Chinatown\, helping to strengthen the role of the arts in community life. \nAt this intimate gathering\, his artistic and life partner Dian Dong will share memories\, rare video footage and images of Chen’s career and discuss his lasting influence. She will always be a dancer first. @rochellehkwan \nMemories from Golden Song 金曲回憶 is a collaboration between dancer and teaching artist Mei-Yin Ng\, Chinatown Records\, cinematographer Liam Lee\, and Manhattan Chinatown seniors at Knickerbocker Village. Since 2024\, this holistic experience for seniors combines physical strength movement classes with sonic history workshops and mixtapes to produce music videos and more for Chinatown’s golden songs and our memories of them. \nMei-Yin Ng was born in the backwater port town of Klang\, Malaysia – poised from birth to create art using the human body and technology. Saving all her ringgits to study dance in America\, she was soon on a one-way flight bound for New York City. Her extensive prop training in Chinese dance inspired her to meditate on the use of props\, and later technology\, as an extension of the human form. She founded MEI-BE WHATever in 2002 as a collective field for collaboration and experimentation of technology in just this vein. MEI-BE WHATever has performed at festivals\, museums and theatres in US\, Asia\, Europe\, North and South America. She also brings her experience as an artistic director and choreographer to produce live\, participatory performances with Chinatown seniors across North America. \nLiam Lee is an Emmy nominated documentary cinematographer based in Brooklyn\, NY. He is passionate about capturing life and strives to create lasting images in his work. He’s been fortunate to travel all over the world working with outlets like HBO\, Amazon\, Netflix\, Showtime\, Discovery\, and Vice. We’ll also taste regional specific loose-leaf teas that complement each type of mooncake. \nBetween sips of fragrant tea and bites of rich mooncake we invite you to try your hand at serving tea in the traditional gongfu style\, expand your tea-tasting palate and make new friends over afternoon tea! SUMMARY:Winged Seeds: Embroidery Evening
DESCRIPTION:Come for a soothing evening of communal sewing led by artist Jia Sung!\n\n\nCome for a soothing evening of communal sewing led by artist Jia Sung! Together we’ll explore some basic techniques of embroidery\, look at some examples from history as well as Jia’s own work\, and learn about its storytelling history and its decorative uses. Participants will get to apply their new needlework vocabulary to various plant and insect motifs drawn from North American invasive species\, designed by Jia. These embroidery sampler squares will contribute to the collaborative portraits for Think!Chinatown’s upcoming exhibition with Jia Sung\, Winged Seeds. \nBasic embroidery experience encouraged. RSVP required! \nImportant: Embroidery pieces created during this workshop will be used for the Winged Seeds exhibition. If you’d like to continue working on your piece\, you can continue to work on it at home but we ask that you return it within two weeks during open studio hours! \nWinged Seeds is an upcoming Think!Chinatown exhibition featuring artwork by Jia Sung. Opening in May 2025\, Winged Seeds will explore the artist’s interests in diasporic narratives\, family archive\, and interspecies kinship\, to uplift and reframe the ancestral stories of Manhattan’s Chinatown. \nJia Sung is a Singaporean Chinese artist and educator whose practice spans painting\, artist books\, textiles\, printmaking\, and translation.
