As a 22-year-old in Spring 1968\, he came to the United States with only $8 in his pocket to do graduate studies in Operations Research/Computer Science at Cornell. He built a 39-year career at the global Fortune 500 specialty materials company Rohm and Haas\, where he retired as Chairman and CEO in April 2009. \nOver his career\, he has served as a director at 15 public companies across a wide range of industries\, including Hewlett Packard\, DuPont\, Arconic/Howmet\, Delphi/Aptiv\, Airgas\, Tyco and Avantor. He also held long-term Board Chair positions at Delphi/Aptiv (7 years) and Avantor (12 years)\, both Fortune 500 companies. In addition\, he has served on the boards of six private companies\, including Vanguard Group\, IRI\, StrozFriedberg\, and Aceto. Raj received a BTech(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from IITBombay in 1967\, followed by an MS in Operations Research/Computer Science from Cornell in 1969 and an MBA in Finance in 1971 from Drexel University. \nAfter retiring from Rohm and Haas Company\, Raj and his wife Kamla established their family’s Ujala Foundation (which means “light” in Hindi)\, focusing on education and healthcare\, equally directed to India and the U.S. Since its inception\, the Ujala Foundation has contributed towards an endowed professor at Hopkins\, initial funding for the Drexel University Gupta Governance Institute\, fellowships at Drexel’s Business School and Cornell University’s School of Biomedical Engineering\, and other causes\, including Raj’s alma mater IITBombay\, and several civic and cultural organizations in India\, such as Pratham and AIF\, and the United States\, such as the Philadelphia Zoo\, Philadelphia Art Museum\, and the Franklin Institute. To date\, the Johns Hopkins Gupta-Klinsky India Institute represents the Ujala Foundation’s single largest commitment. \nRaj and Kamla split their time between suburban Philadelphia\, PA and Bonita Springs\, FL. They are parents to two daughts and grandparents to three boys. Raj documented his personal and professional journey in a book titled Eight Dollars and a Dream: My American Journey\, written in collaboration with Syd Havely and published in 2016. \nBob Lee\, Chairman of the Board\, Blue Shield of California \nAt the time of his retirement from Pacific Bell (now a part of AT&T) in May 1998\, Bob was a corporate Executive Vice President and President of Business Communications Services\, a business unit which included responsibility for $3B in revenue\, $1B in direct expense\, 15\,000 employees and the establishment of two new subsidiaries: Pacific Bell Internet Services and Pacific Bell Network Integration. \nDuring his twenty-six year career\, he managed work groups in operations\, sales\, and marketing. Among his specific jobs at Pacific Bell\, he was the Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales for five years from 1987-1992. In this capacity\, he was responsible for all brand management\, product management\, market strategy and sales for the consumer and business markets. Several major accomplishments in this role were the expansion of distribution channels to sales agents (a first among the regional Bell operating companies) and extensive market segmentation which had major implications to products and channels. Both measures resulted in revenue growth rates greater than the overall national telecommunications market. In 1997\, he negotiated the deal with the San Francisco Giants that resulted in naming their ballpark\, “Pacific Bell Park.” \nBob is currently a director for two companies. Blue Shield of California is a not-for-profit company with revenues of approximately $14B. He has been on the board since November of 2004. He has been the Chairman of the Board since 2012. Broadvision (NASDAQ: BVSN) is an e-commerce software company with revenues in the $60M range. He has been on the board since September 2004. He chairs the compensation committee and serves on the audit committee. \nBob is also active in several nonprofit groups. He is the former Chairman of the Board of Youth Tennis Advantage\, a nonprofit group serving Bay Area inner city kids with tennis and tutoring. He is also the former Chairman of the Committee of 100\, a national non-profit group promoting strong U.S.-China relations and advancing the interests of the Chinese American community in the U.S. He is also a past board member of the Asian Pacific Fund\, serving the Asian American nonprofit community in the Bay Area. Additionally\, he is a member of the Board of Councilors for U.S.C.’s School of Engineering. Currently\, he is serving as a Big Brother in the Big Brother/Big Sister Program of the Bay Area. \nBob received his Bachelor’s of Science degree from the University of Southern California in 1970. He received his MBA from U.C. Berkeley in 1972. In his spare time\, Bob enjoys tennis\, golf and travelling. He and his wife\, Carolyn\, live in Moraga\, California. They have two grown daughters who have families of their own. \nDeb Liu\, former President & CEO of Ancestry \nPrior to joining Ancestry\, Deb was a senior executive at Facebook where she created and led Facebook’s Marketplace\, where millions of people buy and sell from one another. She also led the development of Facebook’s first mobile ad product for apps and its mobile ad network\, in addition to building the company’s games business and its payments platform\, including Facebook Pay. Named by PaymentsSource as one of the most influential women in payments and one of Business Insider’s most powerful female engineers\, Deb has worked in the tech industry for over 18 years. Prior to Facebook\, she spent several years in product roles at PayPal and eBay\, including leading the integration between the two products. \nActively involved with promoting diversity and women in tech\, she is the founder of Women In Product\, a nonprofit to connect and support women in the product management field. Deb serves on the board of Intuit\, and she’s a seed investor and advisor to several startups. The committee reviewed NASA’s plans for human space exploration and formulated options for the administration. He served on the NASA Advisory Council’s Human Exploration and Ops. cmte\, (2009-2020) and is the Special Advisor for Human Spaceflight to the Houston Association for Space and Science Education (HASSE). He also served in a similar role to the Space Foundation from 2012-2016. \n  \nChiao was the first Raborn Distinguished Chair Max Faget Mechanical Engineering Professor at Louisiana State University. He served in that capacity from August 2006 through June 2008\, in the Mechanical Engineering Department. He also previously served as the VP and Advisor for Space and Medical for Epiphan Systems (2012-2017) and as the Executive VP of Technical Operations for Excalibur Almaz\, a commercial spaceflight company from 2006-2012. In addition\, Dr. Chiao held appointments in Rice University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2012-2021. \n  \nDr. Chiao served as a NASA astronaut from 1990-2005. He flew four space missions\, serving aboard three Space Shuttles and a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. He also served as the commander and NASA science officer of Expedition 10\, aboard the International Space Station. During his NASA career\, Chiao served in several leadership and management roles\, including branch chief. \n  \nDr. Chiao earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 1987\, from the University of California at Santa Barbara\, and joined Hexcel Corporation. There\, he was involved in process\, manufacturing\, and engineering research on advanced aerospace materials. He worked on a joint NASA-JPL/Hexcel project to develop an optically correct\, polymer composite precision segment reflector for future space telescopes. In January of 1989 Dr. Chiao joined the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore\, California\, where he was involved in processing research for fabrication of filament-wound and thick-section aerospace composites. While at LLNL\, he developed and demonstrated a mechanistic cure model for graphite fiber/epoxy composite material. This will be a new program under the title of “Master Classes: Asian American Career Lessons” where we will feature experts who will conduct tutorials on various topics related to how individuals can overcome Asian American Career Ceiling Obstacles. \nOur first Master Class will be on the topic of “Master Classes: Asian American Career Lessons – Overcoming Bias and Stereotypes” and will feature two executives who will provide a tutorial. \nOur two instructors will be Fred Hassan\, former CEO of two large pharmaceutical companies\, Pharmacia and Schering Plough\, and now a director at Warburg Pincus and Buck Gee\, former Vice President and General Manager of the Data Center Business Unit\, Cisco and Committee of 100 member. \nWe have purposely selected instructors who were successful in their corporate leadership careers\, but can speak freely about the career challenges in their corporate lives because they are now retired and can give candid advice. In addition to Health Care as his core focus\, he serves as an advisory resource across the firm. His 4 public company boards include BridgeBio\, Cocrystal\, EyePoint\, and Precigen. Fred Hassan is the former Chairman of the Board and CEO of Schering-Plough. Prior to joining Schering-Plough in April 2003\, Hassan was Chairman and CEO of Pharmacia Corporation – a company that was formed in March 2000 because of the merger of Monsanto and Pharmacia and Upjohn. \n  \nHassan joined Pharmacia & Upjohn as CEO in 1997. Previously\, Hassan was EVP of Wyeth\, with responsibility for its pharmaceutical and medical products businesses. He was elected to Wyeth’s Board of Directors in 1995. Earlier in his career\, Hassan spent 17 years with Sandoz Pharmaceuticals (now Novartis) and headed its U.S. pharmaceuticals business. Hassan received a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology at the University of London and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Hassan has chaired significant pharmaceutical industry organizations including The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) and The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations (IFPMA). Hassan also chairs the selection committee for the CEO of the Year – the 23 and 24 honorees being Bastian (Delta) and Su (AMD) respectively. In 2014\, a CNBC panel named Hassan to a list of those who have had the most profound impact on the world of business in the previous quarter century. \n  \nBUCK J. GEE \nFORMER VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF DATA CENTER BUSINESS UNIT OF CISCO \n  \nBuck Gee retired in 2008 from Cisco Systems\, where he was Vice President and General Manager of the Data Center Business Unit. He joined Cisco with its 2004 acquisition of Andiamo Systems where Mr. Gee was President and CEO. \nIn 2010\, he co-founded the Advanced Leadership Program for Asian American Executives\, an executive education program at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He has published several Ascend Foundation research papers on the Asian glass ceiling and has written opinion pieces on that issue for the Harvard Business Review\, New York Times\, San Jose Mercury\, and KQED public television. \nHe is an Executive Advisor to Ascend\, the largest national network of Asian American professionals. He is board president of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation and serves on the advisory board of the Asia Society/Northern California and the advisory board of the Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute. \nPreviously\, he held management positions in engineering\, marketing\, and business development at Hewlett Packard\, National Semiconductor\, 3Com\, Crescendo Communications\, Com21\, and Iospan Wireless.
