SUMMARY:Supporting Queer Arab/SWANA Americans in Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a CE workshop for affirming clinical care with queer second-generation Arab\, Southwest Asian\, and North African Americans.\n\n\nTitle: Supporting Queer Arab/SWANA Americans in Psychotherapy \nSubject: Affirming clinical care with queer second-generation Arab\, Southwest Asian\, and North African Americans. \nCourse Description: “Queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans are a rich\, vibrant\, and diverse community\, yet\, are marginalized within multiple contexts. Anti-Arab\, anti-immigrant\, and cisheteronormative structural norms and policies in the United States intersect with intense cultural and religious beliefs about the incompatibility of sexual and gender diversity and Arab/SWANA identity” (Alsamadi\, 2025\, p.1). Consequently\, queer Arab/SWANA Americans may seek psychotherapy for support in managing stress related to intersectional oppression and disenfranchisement (Alsamadi\, 2025; Chaney et al.\, 2020; Habhab\, 2018; Ikizler & Szymanski\, 2014; Khatib et al.\, 2023). \nThe unique needs of this population are rendered invisible in psychology training programs and continuing education programming. As such\, this workshop will teach attendees (1) relevant cultural values within Arab/SWANA communities; (2) common themes in psychotherapy with queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans; and (3) how the Keeping Radical Healing in Mind (KRHM; Adames et al.\, 2023) therapeutic approach is relevant to queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans. The workshop will conclude with a collaborative case example where attendees will apply the KRHM therapeutic approach to a composite clinical case of a queer second-generation Arab/SWANA American client. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will identify relevant cultural values within Arab/SWANA communities.\nParticipants will identify common themes in psychotherapy with queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans.\nParticipants will describe the Keeping Radical Healing in Mind therapeutic approach and its relevance to queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans.\n\nPresenter Bio: \nDr. Nadia Alsamadi is a queer and nonbinary Palestinian American clinical psychologist\, educator\, and speaker in the Washington\, DC metropolitan area. Dr. Alsamadi is the founder of Beyond the Binary Psychotherapy and Consulting\, PLLC\, where they collaborate with LGBTQ+\, Arab/SWANA\, BIPOC\, and first/second generation immigrant clients to explore issues related to anxiety\, identity\, culture\, oppression\, and empowerment. They support their clients and collaborators in drawing strength and pride from their identities and culture\, resisting false dichotomies\, and reclaiming their own narratives. As a dynamic and engaging speaker\, they build relationships with individuals and organizations to deepen cultural humility\, critical consciousness\, and compassion for the complexity of the human experience. \nYou will also be eligible to earn 3.0 Continuing Education Credits if you hold a New York State License as an LMHC\, LCSW\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMFT\, LPsyAn (LP)\, or Psychologist. \nQ’Lective Therapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors #MHC-0300\, licensed creative arts therapists #CAT-0114\, licensed marriage and family therapists #MFT-0124\, and licensed psychoanalysts #P-0071. \nQ’Lective Therapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0793. \nQ’Lective Therapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0262. \nPlease Note: This training will not be recorded and the attendance list will only be shared with the presenter.
