SUMMARY:Music: Sunny Jain’s Wild Wild East
DESCRIPTION:Called “One of the leading figures in North America’s burgeoning Asian music scene. A global musical alchemist and cultural agent provocateur” by Songlines (UK)\, Sunny Jain is a composer\, drummer\, dhol player and thought leader. \nSunny Jain’s Wild Wild East\, encompasses a myriad facets of Jain’s identity and sonically paints the journey of his own family’s immigration story. He sources musical inspiration from the scores of Bollywood classics\, Punjabi folk traditions\, jazz improvisation\, and rollicking psychedelic styles. His 5 piece band (drums\, vocals\, sax\, guitar\, bass) delivered a fiery NPR Tiny Desk Concert in 2024 and followed it up with an electric live KEXP session in 2025. They toured North America appearing at the iconic Monterey Jazz Festival\, Calgary Jazz Festival\, Victoria Jazz Festival\, The Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center\, National Museum of Asian Art\, and the historic Bryant Park in NYC. In 2022\, the band made a milestone tour to Pakistan headlining Music Mela in Islamabad\, the Lahore Jazz Festival and performing with master Sufi dhol drummers Nasir Sain Wajdani and Sain Tanveer. Just months prior to that\, Sunny Jain’s Wild Wild East performed on the National Mall in Washington D.C. for the renowned Smithsonian Folklife Festival. \nWhile growing up with a deep cultural connection to his South Asian heritage\, Sunny Jain also fell in love with jazz music and prog rock. His eclectic musical upbringing has brought him to perform with percussion legends Mickey Hart & Zakir Hussain and Planet Drum\, to pop icons Ed Sheeran\, David Byrne\, Jon Batiste and Italian Pop Star Jovanotti\, to many jazz luminaries. He has been at the zeitgeist of America’s South Asian sounds for the past 2 decades. He founded and plays dhol in the pioneering Brooklyn band\, Red Baraat\, and has drummed with some of the top South Asian artists out there (Ali Sethi\, Ganavya\, Arooj Aftab\, Vijay Iyer\, DJ Rekha\, Heems\, Karsh Kale and Junoon). She has made appearances on TV series and films such as Love Life (HBO)\, Turn Me On (IFC) and most recently Overcompensating (Prime). \nSam Poon (@spoonuel) is an actor\, singer and songwriter who been working since the age of nine. He was most recently seen as Warren in the world premiere of Empire Records at the McCarter Theatre in New Jersey. On Broadway he appeared in Macbeth\, The King and I\, and Sing Street. He also performed in national tours of Les Misérables and Billy Elliot. His numerous TV and Film credits include FBI\, Boychoir\, Crazy Famous\, Portraits in Dramatic Time\, Generation Wrecks\, “NBC’s New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly\,” “The Late Show with David Letterman\,” and “The Today Show.” His original music defies genre and definition for a truly unique sonic experience. \nHelen Sung (@sung_helen) is an award-winning jazz pianist and composer and a Guggenheim Fellow. A native of Houston\, Texas\, and alumna of HSPVA\, she diverged from her classical upbringing after a jazz epiphany during studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Helen went on to graduate in the inaugural class of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance (re-named the Herbie Hancock Institute in 2019) and win the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition. In addition to her own band and projects\, she has performed with such luminaries as Clark Terry\, Wayne Shorter\, Ron Carter\, Wynton Marsalis\, Regina Carter\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, Cecile McLorin Salvant\, Lea Delaria\, and the Mingus Big Band. She is currently on faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Columbia University. A Steinway artist\, “Sung plays with crisp swing and elegant invention\, her rhythms drawing from the music’s deepest blues roots – and setting listeners’ heads bobbing – while she explores her own fresh ideas\, often inspired from her classical training.” (New York Times) \nSlanty Eyed Mama (@slantyeyedmama)  Part hip hop\, part rock\, part electroclash\,  part spoken word part comedy from two rock n roll asian chicks. This comedy solo show is based on the time when comedian Ricky Sim was grappling with the decision to come out to his Chinese-Malaysian immigrant mother\, just as she was diagnosed with terminal cancer – talk about good timing. Combining stand-up and storytelling\, the show explores growing up as a gaysian in the noughties in NY\, learning how to keep his first boyfriend with the help of the rapper Sean Paul\, while navigating the complexity of coming out\, alongside the intersection of racial and cultural identity. Ricky Sim is a lawyer-turned-comedian originally from Malaysia. Tonight’s show will feature some premieres of newly-written material and classics from her eclectic and wide-ranging body of work.
