DESCRIPTION:Come find refuge in a space that celebrates & centers Asians! \n“In the West\, yellow’s unsavory status went back centuries…The color grew to represent envy\, jealousy…duplicity…and cowardice. \nYellow was a contemptible color in the Western imagination\, and it fit snugly with the Western idea of the Oriental human being\, especially as he became a threat first to the American workingman\, then to the chaste American woman\, and finally to Western civilization itself. \n– Excerpts from “Big Little Man” by Alex Tizon \nFor Asians\, yellow represents soil & earth\, life\, resistance\, courage\, rebirth\, revolution\, & unity.We are reclaiming and rewriting all narratives that undermine the richness and complexity of Asian individuals\, cultures\, traditions\, & longing. Join us in amplifying and celebrating Asian heritage with song\, dance\, poetry\, performance\, & discourse. \nFor a peek into the power & creativity of some of our Asian artists\, delight in our gift bags from CommemorASIAN: Shame is Not Ours to Keep (2024) & Yellow CommemorASIAN (2025)! \nThere is no need to sign up to perform. Anyone can perform as long as they are amplifying Asian voices\, artists\, initiatives\, & experiences. A list of Asian artists will be shared for participants to peruse their work and share whatever resonates with them – of course\, you are welcome to add to our list! Each VOICE will have the floor for 5 minutes. \nCreating a safer space for everyone is our priority. We do not tolerate any discrimination\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, queerphobia\, islamophobia\, antisemitism\, ableism\, xenophobia\, and sanism. \nWe demand a free Congo\, Nepal\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, Tibet\, Turtle Island\, Ukraine\, Yemen; and freedom for all countries\, peoples\, and species that face colonization\, erasure\, and oppression. If you do not align with our ethos\, then this space is not for you. \nOtherwise\, we’ll see you on the last Sunday of the month (with some exceptions)!
