SUMMARY:Dance: A4 Mirage No Wana
DESCRIPTION:Asian American Arts Alliance’s 2024 Jadin Wong Fellow Kanon Sugino will be presenting a dance work performed by an all Japanese cast. Mirage no Wana is an exploration of Japanese culture\, heritage\, language\, societal norms\, body image\, and mental health\, portraying the multidimensionality of the culture and its people. Amidst the richness and beauty of Japan is a concealed toxic and self-deprecating culture. This work seeks to recognize both the light and shadow of the Japanese cultural identity to allow for a call for compassion and a deeper understanding of the multifaceted Japanese experience. Mirage no Wana will not only feature Japanese dancers but also a Japanese Traditional Wadaiko (drum) player\, as well as Japanese artisans who will be showcasing their work available for purchase before the performance. \n7:00 pm doors open / 7:30 pm performance begins \nTickets:\n$15 in advance and $20 at-the-door. \nRuntime:\n40 minutes \n

DESCRIPTION:Join Asian American Arts Alliance (A4) for the latest workshop of our professional development series\, Table Dish\, to help further the careers of AAPI in dance. \nTable Dish: Dance is a career development roundtable event where professionals in the field of dance will meet with emerging and mid-career professionals to “dish” career advice and lead candid discussions about tips to succeed in the industry. \nThe career roundtable aims to provide facilitators and participants the opportunity to network and build relationships with peers and mentors\, offer a genuine way for AAPI community members to give back\, engage arts leaders and professionals in a meaningful way\, and help build a pipeline of AAPI arts leaders\, role models\, and experts. \nTable Dish: Dance will be composed of three 30-minute networking sessions. Individual participants rotate every 30 minutes to meet with a total of three different leaders. After the breakout sessions\, we’ll come together to share with one another.

DESCRIPTION:A4 and MoCADA present Bandung Community Conversation: Echo Chambers with Mohiba Ahmed\, a dedicated community organizer at DRUM (Desis Rising Up and Moving). Ahmed brings extensive experience from grassroots feminist movements and student rights organizations in Pakistan and is a founding member of the Progressive Students’ Collective and Haqooq-e-Khalq Party Pakistan. \nDRUM\, a multigenerational organization led by low-wage South Asian and Indo-Caribbean immigrants\, workers\, and youth in New York City\, has been at the forefront of social and policy change since 2000. By mobilizing thousands of low-income community members\, DRUM addresses immigrant rights\, education reform\, civil rights\, and worker justice. Ahmed’s work with DRUM includes base building\, leadership development\, campaign strategy\, and coalition-building. \nJoin us for an insightful conversation as we explore the stepping outside of echo chambers and the power of community organizing. \nThe talk will be livestreamed on the MoCADA website. https://mocada.org/bandung-residency-2024/ \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but RSVP is required.

SUMMARY:See What I Wanna See
DESCRIPTION:“See What I Wanna See”\, a musical by Michael John LaChiusa\, is based on three short stories by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. The story unfolds like a classical Japanese screen painting\, opening each act with a prologue inspired by Kesa and Morito\, a pair of fatally contentious lovers. The first act\, set in 1951\, follows a murder in Central Park from contradicting perspectives where everyone’s truth may be a lie. Act two centers on a priest in 2002\, wavering in his faith and creating a hoax about a miracle.
