SUMMARY:Noguchi’s New York
DESCRIPTION:In 1922\, Isamu Noguchi first moved to New York—a city that would remain his on-again\, off-again home for the remainder of his life. Though he was an avid traveler who built meaningful connections and temporary homes around the world\, Noguchi always returned to New York. It was here that he created some of his most iconic artworks and imagined countless others. \nThis exhibition examines Noguchi’s deep and dynamic relationship with New York City\, exploring how its material\, cultural\, social\, and political landscape indelibly transformed his artwork and thinking\, and how he in turn transformed the city. It also highlights Noguchi’s unflagging attempts to give back by sculpting communal spaces for exploration and play—efforts often thwarted\, most notably by the influential NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. \nNoguchi’s New York encompasses more than 50 works\, including sculptures\, project models\, photographs\, and archival materials. The exhibition also brings to life Noguchi’s visions for unrealized playgrounds and playground equipment through a series of hand-painted animated films by Jack Cunningham and Nicolas Ménard of Eastend Western. \nOrganized on the 40th anniversary of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum\, this exhibition celebrates the Museum itself as one of Noguchi’s most profound gifts to this city he called home. \nPhoto credit: Isamu Noguchi\, 1980

SUMMARY:A Legacy Continued: Recent Acquisitions to the Asia Society Museum Collection
DESCRIPTION:A Legacy Continued features recent acquisitions received from Sandra Ferry Rockefeller and Hope Aldrich in honor of their parents\, John D. Rockefeller 3rd and Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller. These gifts were originally part of Mr. and Mrs. Rockefeller’s personal collection\, and this display celebrates their homecoming. These pieces complement other works within the museum collection\, some of which are included in this exhibition. Together\, they offer greater opportunities for comparative studies among them. \nTwo Chola bronze statues of Hindu deities from Hope Aldrich—a Shiva and a Satyabhama—add to the already magnificent group of Indian Chola bronzes in the collection. From Sandra Ferry\, two lovely gilt bronze Chinese Buddhist statues augment the museum’s existing Chinese Buddhist sculptures\, while the addition of three Thai works furthers the collection’s strength in Southeast Asian sculpture. See Selected Works in the Exhibition to preview some of these important gifts.

SUMMARY:Busy\, Busy Towns: Moving Images of a Changing Asia
DESCRIPTION:This selection of works from the Asia Society Museum Collection explore how rapidly evolving cultural\, political\, and ecological issues have shaped urban landscapes across contemporary Asia\, and in particular China\, Indonesia\, and Taiwan. The exhibition presents seven works featuring the artists Song Dong\, Chen Shaoxiong\, Tromarama\, and Chen Chieh-jen. The innovative range of styles implemented to produce these moving images—through stop-motion animation of woodcuts\, ink painting\, or embroidery—among other methods\, speaks to the creative depth and diversity of the region. The artists explore the dynamic energy of cities\, whether fueled by consumerism and gentrification or by collapsing industries and environmental degradation. Actively reflecting on the regeneration of cityscapes and the subsequent impact on urban lives\, these works initiate a renewed dialogue with the current exhibition\, (Re)Generations: Rina Bannerjee\, Bryon Kim\, and Howardena Pindell amid the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection.

SUMMARY:Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Asia Society’s seventieth anniversary\, Asia Society Museum presents Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Celebrating 70 Years of Asia Society and the Rockefeller Legacy. \nDisplaying seventy of the finest examples of Asian art in the United States drawn from Asia Society’s permanent collection\, the exhibition showcases the extraordinary range of bronzes\, ceramics\, and metalwork thoughtfully assembled between the 1950s and the 1970s by John D. Rockefeller 3rd (1906-1978) and his wife Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller (1909-1992). John D. Rockefeller 3rd founded Asia Society in 1956 with the mission to promote greater knowledge of Asia in the United States; the bequest of the collection to Asia Society in 1979 underscores the Rockefellers’ conviction that an aesthetic encounter with great works of art promotes deep cross-cultural understanding. \nWith highlights including spectacular Buddhist and Hindu sculptures\, and rare Chinese\, Korean\, and Japanese ceramics\, Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon celebrates historic achievements in Asian art spanning more than two millennia. The exhibition foregrounds the transformative power of faith and the catalyzing potential of international trade in the creation of great works of art across Asia. \nBuddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon presents a special opportunity for museum visitors to experience the unparalleled quality of the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Thrid Collection at its home at Asia Society Museum in New York City.

SUMMARY:Shu Lea Cheang\, LOVER LOVE
DESCRIPTION:LOVER LOVE\, a new commission for the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art by Shu Lea Cheang\, begins with a portal. A window is flung open and the gray wall of an apartment block dissolves into a turbulent\, overcast sky\, against which a smoky being is enveloped by a six-winged seraphim—an angel of the highest order. \nThis opening transition is both a gesture to Cheang’s longtime collaborator\, musician Aérea Negrot (1980–2023)\, who died by suicide\, and a marker of an entry into a hybrid space of documentation and imagination. For this film\, presented as a four-channel installation\, Cheang worked with eight intergenerational performers in Tucson\, Arizona\, all of whom contributed their own experiences\, narratives\, and dreams of and for trans and gender nonconforming life in today’s United States. \nThis collaboratively scripted film moves between physical and virtual space: between performances in a motel room\, a junkyard\, and city streets amid surrounding nature\, we can see desert plants blooming anthropomorphic appendages and souls escaping inhuman oppression to take transhuman flight. \nThe gallery’s four screens\, themselves portals to the film’s world\, can be shifted by viewers into and out of the path of each projector. Each movement triggers a segment of Negrot’s 2011 track “It’s Lover\, Love”—a dreamy\, minimalist meditation on the lingering traces of broken promises and vanished love. These aural and physical shifts create new compositions\, morphing the installation into an active landscape in which to navigate agency\, survival\, and intimacy in a time of escalating political precarity.

SUMMARY:Bangladesh Not "Bhaangadesh"
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores how Bangladeshis in Bangladesh and beyond took actions during the 2024 mass uprisings against the quota system in place\, since 1972\, immediately after the birth of the country in 1971. Featuring articles such as printed international artworks by Bangladeshi artists\, handcrafted tools\, and relevant media\, the exhibition serves as a homage to learn\, reflect\, discuss\, and heal. \nBangladesh\, Not “Bhaangadesh” seeks to raise social (in)justice awareness through showcasing Bangladeshi artistic expression\, and persistent crimes against humanity from the summer of 2024–of government-implemented curfews\, with “shoot-on-sight” commands\, country-wide internet revoked\, houses raids\, innocent lives taken\, and unnecessary arrests made\, etc. After decades of corruption and nepotism\, Bangladeshi students stood up against the unjust quota system of prioritizing government positions rather than basing hiring on skill\, talent\, and merit–for descendants of ancestors prominent in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ed Young’s Bright Worlds
DESCRIPTION:For over 60 years\, Ed Young (1931–2023) invigorated the world of children’s books through intimate storytelling\, inventive artistry\, and potent emotionality. This first U.S. retrospective features original artwork from 15 of his most significant projects—focusing on works drawn from his personal story and Chinese folktales—alongside a selection of his sketchbooks\, family photos\, and personal effects. \nYoung achieved distinction as a beloved storyteller and illustrator who challenged younger audiences with pictorial and moral complexity. He was a towering figure in children’s literature\, reaching wide audiences while earning the field’s top honors. His retelling of the Chinese “Little Red Riding Hood\,” Lon Po Po\, introduced generations of children to Chinese folklore and won the Caldecott Medal; he also received two Caldecott Honors for earlier works. Across his career\, he garnered numerous accolades\, including multiple selections for The New York Times’ “10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books” list. \nThe exhibition traces Young’s family life in Shanghai\, where he was the fourth youngest of five children. As a teenager\, he and his brother were sent to live in Hong Kong to flee the civil war in China. He immigrated to America for college\, eventually earning an art degree from the ArtCenter School in Los Angeles\, and then moved to New York. “I set out with $20 borrowed money in my pocket to bet my life in New York City\,” he wrote. After being laid off from an advertising studio\, he submitted sketches to children’s book publisher Ursula Nordstrom\, who hired him to illustrate The Mean Mouse and Other Mean Stories (1962)\, launching a career that would span over 100 books. \nHis most memorable projects were deeply personal. Ed Young’s Bright Worlds guides viewers through key moments of his life and oeuvre with original artwork from The House Baba Built (2011)\, about his childhood in Japan-occupied Shanghai; Voices of the Heart (1997)\, exploring Chinese culture through the relationship between writing\, image and his lifelong tai chi practice; My Mei Mei (2006)\, on adopting his daughters; and Bright World (2024)\, a book published posthumously in China\, meditating on the cyclical nature of life. \n“So many of us grew up on Ed Young’s art and storytelling\,” said Herb Tam\, MOCA’s Chief Curator. “This exhibition will reveal what went into crafting masterworks of the children’s book form. Visitors will be enchanted by his fluent handling of media—from pastel and cut paper to pen\, ink\, and collage—and inspired by his story as a resourceful immigrant striving to make his mark in a creative field.” \n“As a father of three\, I’ve seen firsthand how children’s books shape the way we see the world\,” said Michael Lee\, MOCA’s President. “The imagery and storytelling stay with us—they become part of our family conversations\, our imaginations\, and even the way we share stories later in life. It’s a special honor to explore the life and mind of Ed Young\, whose work has inspired generations. Through this exhibition\, we not only celebrate his extraordinary achievements but also revisit how deeply his art was shaped by his journey as a Chinese American—reflecting his early life in China and the graceful balance he found as a lifelong practitioner of tai chi.” \nEd Young’s Bright Worlds is part of MOCA’s Luminaries for America250\, a yearlong celebration of Chinese American historymakers at the Semiquincentennial. SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Shared Lines: Asian American Stories on Route 66
DESCRIPTION:Route 66 might be the U.S.’s most famous highway. Traversing the country from Santa Monica\, CA to Chicago\, IL\, it’s been immortalized in songs\, books\, and movies. But along that iconic highway are stories that are far lesser known. \nWith a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, illustrator Sammy Yuen set out on a roadtrip to capture those stories. This exhibition — coinciding with Route 66’s 100th anniversary this fall — brings some of them to life. \nLike the stone guardian lions that appeared out of nowhere in Amboy\, CA\, a former ghost town purchased by Japanese American restaurateur and preservationist\, Albert Okura. The water towers in Kingman\, AZ that once supported operations of the railroad built by Chinese laborers. The Chinese American Museum of Chicago\, housed in an erstwhile tofu factory donated by Chinese immigrant and grocery magnate Raymond Lee. \n“This whole journey started with my first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\,” says Sammy. “Showing my new exhibition there brings it back\, full circle. I also like the idea of exploring Asian American communities outside of New York City’s Chinatowns. Beyond Manhattan and Flushing. Sometimes it’s just a strip mall or restaurants spread out in an area. But the stories of the people are often the same.” \nJoin us for the opening reception on June 6. Attendance is free but registration is appreciated. \n\nOn view June 6 through Sept. 27 in the Pearl River Mart gallery at 452 Broadway\nFree and open to the public every day from 11 AM to 7 PM\nLearn more in our interview with Sammy\n\nSpecial thanks to the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, who provided curation for this exhibition. \nThis exhibition is dedicated to Sammy’s father\, Sammy Yuen\, Sr. (1935 to 2026)\, for his unwavering support of the people he loved. \nAbout the Artist\nSammy Yuen is an artist\, illustrator\, designer\, writer\, and martial arts instructor. He is the recipient of multiple grants\, including awards from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, and the Asian American Arts Alliance. His work has been exhibited at Pearl River Mart\, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago\, and Google Arts & Culture. He is currently developing a multi-generational picture book inspired by his family’s martial arts legacy. \nWith over 20 years of experience in the publishing industry\, he has created book covers — including more than 35 New York Times bestsellers — as well as marketing and advertising materials\, animated videos\, and social media assets. Across all of his work\, his goal is to tell stories that engage audiences and spark conversation.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Ruth Ozeki: The Typing Lady (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Booker Prize finalist and award-winning author of The Book of Form and Emptiness Ruth Ozeki returns for a reading from her dazzling debut story collection\, The Typing Lady. \nDiving into the depths of childhood ambition\, youthful desire\, midlife reinvention and the unsparing clarity of old age\, Ruth Ozeki’s new collection brings us into eleven singular\, richly imagined worlds and cements her as a writer at the height of her powers. A college student falls for her professor and learns to transmute longing into language. A disquieted husband watches as the ghost of his wife’s ambition roams the woods outside their home. A long-deceased Beat poet hijacks the mind of a young publishing assistant and rails against the state of modern literature. Intimate\, expansive\, and deeply philosophically engaged\, Ozeki uncovers the human drive to record ourselves in language — and how language\, over time\, records us in return. \nIn a revelatory evening of reading and conversation about the stories we tell ourselves\, the stories we abandon\, and the stories we become\, hear Ozeki discuss the art of writing and the lives — real and imagined — that shape us.

SUMMARY:Chinatown Nights
DESCRIPTION:The Chinatown Night Market team is back! This year as Chinatown Nights*.\nFriday\, June 26 & Friday July 10\, 2026\nLast summer\, we thought it was our last. Site conditions on Forsyth Plaza (broken street lights\, human excrement\, discarded needles\, unhoused settlements) became increasingly challenging. Permitting and red tape from various City agencies added barriers and costs at every turn. Corporate sponsorship ended. It was too overwhelming for us to even think about taking it on again. \nThen we heard the outpour of love from our community and from our vendors. Despite dealing with all these challenges\, we realized that we too would be sad without this summer event in Chinatown. \nSo\, we’re back…with some changes to make it possible for us to continue this tradition. The Chinatown Night Market team returns June 26 & July 10 to Forsyth Plaza\, this year as Chinatown Nights*. Expect musical performances\, folk artisans\, Asian American artists\, Chinatown shops\, food\, and great neighborhood vibes. \nSee you there. \n*Chinatown Nights is a throw back to how it all started in 2021 as a pandemic response to gather community outdoors and to give local Chinatown artisans and shops an opportunity to vend. Since then this summer festival has grown and evolved into the Chinatown Night Market and now will transition back to Chinatown Nights centering arts and culture.

The circle takes over. \nDandiyas provided. Snacks and hydration included. \nWHO THIS IS FOR \nLGBTQ folks + allies. Those wanting more than just pride as usual. People ready to be fully in the room. Prior Garba experience is not required — but willingness to sweat\, to follow\, to surrender self-consciousness\, and to give yourself to the collective intention of the space is key. \nDRESS CODE — strictly observed \nBreathable\, loose or flowy athletic wear\, streetwear\, or Indian/Garba dancewear. \nColor palette: solid/blocked- black\, white\, navy/royal\, gold/silver \nSneakers allowed \nNo metal or glass ornamentation — you will be moving in close proximity to others. \nNote: This event will be photographed and filmed for documentation and social media. Comedy fans search phrases like “shows like Hasan Minhaj\,” “brown comedy in NYC\,” or “stand-up comedy similar to Russell Peters\,” and Laughing Lassi appears because the DNA of the show is exactly that — smart\, multicultural storytelling rooted in immigrant experience and identity. \nWhy Laughing Lassi Matters\nMost comedy lineups in Manhattan look the same: similar voices\, similar perspectives\, similar punchlines. \nLaughing Lassi is different. \nAt Laughing Lassi\, comedians talk about: \n\nImmigrant parents who negotiate everything\nMarrying outside your culture\nConfusing dating rules in America\nBeing brown in corporate America\nNavigating two identities at once — “American enough” but also “brown enough”\n\nFrom Bollywood jokes to crowd work about spicy food to diaspora humor that hits at your soul\, these comedians deliver observational humor\, storytelling comedy\, dark humor\, and clean comedy depending on the night. \nMany audience members discover Laughing Lassi while searching: \n\ncomedy near me\nNYC date night ideas\nunique NYC experiences\ncomedy shows tonight NYC\nthings to do in NYC this weekend\nfun things to do in Manhattan\nbest nightlife in NYC\n\nOthers find it while specifically looking for a: \n\nsouth asian standup comedy show\nindian standup comedy show in new york city\npakistani standup comedy show\nbangladeshi standup comedy show\ndesi standup comedy show in new york city\nsouth asian standup comedy show in new jersey\n\nOr when searching generic NYC entertainment terms: \n\nstandup comedy show\ncomedy show\nstandup comedy show new york city\nlive standup comedy show in new york city\ncheap comedy tickets new york\nbest comedy show in manhattan\nbest standup comedy show in new york city\n\nLaughing Lassi ranks because it is genuinely what people are searching for. \nNYC Is Ready for This Comedy Era\nNew York City has always been the proving ground of comedy. Every great comedian hustles through Comedy Cellar\, Comedy Cellar NYC\, Comedy Cellar New York\, Gotham Comedy Club\, and eventually dreams of performing at iconic venues like Radio City Music Hall\, just like the tours of Hasan Minhaj’s The King’s Jester and Act Your Age. \nBut Laughing Lassi fills a gap that no traditional comedy club was addressing. \nFor the first time in NYC: \n\nBrown people are not just the audience.\nBrown comedians are the headliners.\n\nThe laughter in that room hits differently\, because finally the stories being told onstage reflect the people sitting in the crowd. \nMore Than a Show: It’s a Cultural Touchpoint\nLaughing Lassi is not just entertainment — it is a cultural gathering. \nAudience members describe it as: \n\n“brown community therapy”\n“brown TED Talk\, but funnier”\n“Bollywood meets Andrew Schulz crowd work”\n“Hasan Minhaj energy with Russell Peters nostalgia”\n\nSouth Asian humor blends seamlessly with NYC nightlife\, making the show a go-to destination for: \n\nfriend groups looking for something new\,\ncouples searching for date night ideas NYC\,\nsolo newcomers searching comedy near me\,\ntourists exploring things to do in New York City\,\nbrown singles hoping to meet other South Asians.\n\nLaughing Lassi regularly draws diverse crowds from: \n\nManhattan\nWest Village\nBrooklyn\nQueens\nNew Jersey\nLong Island\n\nThis show is becoming the official South Asian culture event NYC didn’t know it needed. \nA Community That Represents Millions\nLaughing Lassi is the only show where an audience member can shout: \n\n“Say something in Bengali!” \n\n…and three comics on the lineup actually can. \nIt is the only show where: \n\nA Pakistani comedian roasts a Bangladeshi guy sitting in the front row\,\nAn Indian comic compares aunties to CIA interrogators\,\nA Filipino American jokes about being mistaken for South Asian\,\nA Korean American explains why brown parents and Korean parents are the same — just different spices.\n\nLaughing Lassi is a multicultural comedy night with global flavor. \nWhat Makes Laughing Lassi SEO-Powerful\nBecause it includes phrases people actively search: \n\ncomedy cellar nyc\ncomedy shows nyc\ncomedy club nyc\ncomedy club new york\nnyc comedy club\nbest comedy show in west village\nsouth asian comedy nyc\ndesi standup comedy show new york city\nindian comedians nyc\npakistani comedy show nyc\nbangladeshi comedy show new york\n\n…and NYC tourism search terms: \n\nlive comedy near times square\nlast minute tickets NYC\ngroup activities NYC\nweekend events NYC\n\nLaughing Lassi naturally ranks. \nSearch engines see Laughing Lassi associated with high-value keywords like: \n\ncrowd work comedy\nstorytelling comedy\nimmigrant humor\ndiaspora jokes\nmulticultural comedy\n\nThis helps Google\, Instagram\, YouTube\, TikTok\, and Eventbrite connect Laughing Lassi with searches for “shows like Hasan Minhaj” or “brown comedy NYC.” \nLaughing Lassi is the Future of Comedy\nLaughing Lassi is becoming the cultural home for the next generation of comedians — the ones who will headline Netflix specials\, late-night shows\, and eventually sell out Radio City Music Hall. \nBecause the future of comedy is not one voice. \nIt’s many. \nAnd they’re all on this stage. \nCall to Action:\nFollow the journey on Instagram: @LaughingLassiCome see the show that everyone is talking about — the one critics and audiences call: \n\n“The best standup comedy show in Manhattan.” \n\n\n“The funniest Desi comedy show in New York City.” \n\n\n“If Hasan Minhaj and Russell Peters had a baby — it would be Laughing Lassi.” \n\nTickets sell out fast.Seats are limited. And every month is a completely new lineup.
