SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:REPLAY] Foundations 2025: "Modernity" and Institutional Racism
DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. As a completely volunteer-run organization\, we are so grateful for your financial support! \nwww.aajil.org \nwww.instagram.com/aajil_org/ \n \nYou will be able to access the link by signing into your Eventbrite and viewing links from Get Tickets or going the link under Location with View Event Details. \nApplication for our Formations Program ’25-’26 available now.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition\, Fashion\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City and how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress. \nThe New York Sari centers the sari as an essential part of the cultural fabric of New York City\, using it as a metaphor for the ways in which the individuals who wear and create saris have straddled tradition\, culture\, and modernity in their work\, art\, and lives. The exhibition tells the stories of who wears saris\, the relationship between saris and identities\, and how they’ve evolved over time. \nThe New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City from the Gilded Age to the present day\, beginning with the little known history of Coney Island’s first theme park and culminating with the vibrant communities that are home to the South Asian diaspora today. Offering a unique history of migrant communities and gender in New York City\, the exhibition explores how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress.

SUMMARY:Natalia Nakazawa Artist Activation: Opening Celebration 2025
DESCRIPTION:Activities will include poster printmaking\, writing stories\, creating zines\, recording oral histories and 3D scanning personal objects.\n\n\nNatalia Nakazawa Artist Activation: Opening Celebration 2025 \nFriday\, September 12\, 2025 | TBD \nHow can we visualize our journeys? What have you brought with you? What is important to bring into the future? Inspired by the words of Matsuo Bashō\, “the journey itself is my home\,” \nActivities will include poster printmaking\, writing stories\, creating zines\, recording oral histories and 3D scanning personal objects. \nAbout Natalia Nakazawa: \nNatalia Nakazawa (b. 1982\, Charlotte\, NC) is a Queens-based interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work spans painting\, textiles\, and social practice. As a child of Latin American (Uruguayan) and Asian (Japanese American\, Yonsei) diasporas\, she draws on complex cultural legacies to explore identity\, migration\, and storytelling. Through collaborative\, community-driven projects\, Nakazawa blurs the boundaries between education\, activism\, and art\, inviting collective participation. Her jacquard textiles incorporate images from open-access museum collections\, often highlighting historical moments of cultural exchange. These works serve as tactile archives; places to critically engage with memory. \nAbout the Fellowship: \nThe Socrates Annual Fellowship and exhibition reflects Socrates’ founding commitment to artistic experimentation and excellence\, while also nurturing artists’ careers. Artists are selected through an open call and receive financial support\, access to Socrates’ outdoor studios and technical support\, and inclusion in a Park-wide exhibition. Since 2001\, 279 artists have participated with many subsequently receiving further commissions for public art projects. The Socrates Annual Fellowship & Exhibition is one of the Park’s longest running programs and is an important training ground for early career artists to gain experience creating art in the public realm. \nThis year’s Fellowship will respond to the theme “Up/rooted\,” which explores the complexities of uprooting species for long-term sustainability and resilience. The term “uprooted” evokes the tension between dislocation and resilience. “Up” signifies the act of lifting away\, while “root” refers to the hidden systems below the ground—anchoring life and absorbing essential nutrients. This duality invites us to reflect on the implications of relocation and adaptation\, exploring how when done thoughtfully it can foster new growth and understanding. In what ways can we foster regeneration while acknowledging and mitigating the losses within our ecological and social landscapes? How might we navigate the delicate balance between ecological preservation and community needs to create a more resilient future?

SUMMARY:The Second United Lenape / Lunáapeew Nations Pow Wow
DESCRIPTION:Join the weekend of family friendly fun\, culture\, art and learning with Indigenous dancers\, drummers\, and artisan craft and food vendors. \nJoin Prospect Park Alliance\, the nonprofit that sustains the Prospect Park in partnership with the city\, Éenda-Lŭnaapeewáhkiing Collective\, which brings together Lunáapeew/Lenape communities who have been displaced across Turtle Island (North America)\, and American Indian Community House\, which promotes the well-being and visibility of the American Indian community\, for the Second United Lenape/Lunáapeew Nations Pow Wow at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park. \nThe first Pow Wow held in Prospect Park since 1972\, and the second ever Lenape Pow Wow in New York City\, this free\, two-day public event welcomes the original Indigenous Lenape peoples who were forced to relocate across the continent back to their ancestral homelands to reunite and share their cultures with Brooklynites today. Join the weekend of family friendly fun\, culture\, art and learning with Indigenous dancers\, drummers\, and artisan craft and food vendors. \nPow Wows are gatherings where Lenape/Lunáapeew and neighboring Indigenous nations socialize and celebrate life. Prospect Park hosted formal Pow Wows from 1916 to 1972. Reviving this tradition in Prospect Park provides the Lenape/Lunáapeew an opportunity to celebrate their culture in their homelands and offers Brooklynites of all backgrounds the chance to enjoy the drumming\, dancing\, singing\, art\, crafts and foods of the original stewards of this land. \nLenape grandfather George Stonefish organized the First United Lenape/Lunáapeew Nations Pow Wow at the Park Avenue Armory in 2018. In 2024\, Prospect Park Alliance held a culture fair with the American Indian House and EL Collective as a precursor to the Pow Wow. Prospect Park Alliance is honored to help continue this important tradition by hosting Lenape and allied Indigenous artists and creators\, dancers and drummers\, and artisan craft and food vendors in Prospect Park for a weekend of family-friendly culture\, learning and fun. \nLunáapeew/Lenape means human beings or\, more specifically\, “the ones who came from thought\,” and is the name of the indigenous peoples whose ancestral homelands encompassed what is today Brooklyn and the surrounding region. Éenda-Lŭnaapeewáhkiing\, “the land of the Lunáapeew\,” holds the stories of a civilization rich with a deep understanding of the delicate balance and mutual relationships necessary to nurture and sustain a healthy world. \nThe Pow Wow is part of the Alliance’s ReImagine Lefferts initiative\, which is transforming the Lefferts Historic House museum to explore the lives\, resistance and resilience of the Indigenous people of Lenapehoking\, whose unceded ancestral lands the park and house rests upon\, and Africans who were enslaved by the Lefferts family.
