SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. SUMMARY:Theater: GUT (굿) Act 2: Memoirs
DESCRIPTION:Memoirs (Act 2) is the second act of GUT (굿)\, a three-act autobiographical hybrid/dance work and the fifth and final installment of Soomi Kim’s series exploring mortality in Korean and Asian American lives. Set between 1950s postwar Korea and present-day America\, Memoirs traces a poetic journey through grief\, fragmented memory\, and complicated love—asking: how can we let go when grief is a knot of longing and regret? \nGUT (굿) Act 2: Memoirs (a work in progress) brings together a stellar company of 4 AAPI performers led by director and co-developer Peter Kim. The piece was first developed at Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor residency in 2023 and continued its journey at BAM’s 2024 Artist Residency\, followed by the Mercury Store in 2025. This production is made possible by support from The NYC Women’s Fund for Media\, Music and Theatre by the City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment in association with The New York Foundation for the Arts. \nCreated by Soomi Kim. SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:Festival & Screening – 9-Man: 80 Years of Chinatown Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate 80 years of 9-Man with an evening of food\, music\, and local vendors in the heart of Chinatown. This special community event honors the legacy of the game and the people who’ve built it—on and off the court. Whether you’re a longtime player or just discovering 9-Man\, come experience the culture and community that make it all possible. \nJoin us for a special outdoor screening of the award-winning documentary 9-MAN on Sunday\, August 31 at 7:30 PM in Columbus Park. \n9-MAN uncovers an isolated and unique streetball tournament played by Chinese-Americans in the heart of Chinatowns across the USA and Canada. Largely undiscovered by the mainstream\, the game is a gritty\, athletic\, chaotic urban treasure traditionally played in parking lots and back alleys and it is fiercely protected by a community of men who require that 2/3 of players are “100% Chinese.” In the 1930’s\, a 9-Man tournament was born. It emerged at a time when anti-Chinese sentiment and laws forced restaurant workers and laundrymen to socialize exclusively amongst themselves. Today it’s a lasting connection to Chinatown for a dynamic community of men who know a different\, more integrated world\, but still fight to maintain autonomy and tradition. \nPart of the The 80th North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament
