SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: The Lams of Ludlow St
DESCRIPTION:The Lams of Ludlow Street\nThomas Holton \nBAXTER ST is pleased to present The Lams of Ludlow Street\, a solo exhibition by photographer Thomas Holton\, presented as part of the organization’s Mid-Career Initiative. Spanning over two decades\, this deeply personal body of work chronicles the evolving lives of a single Chinese-American family in Manhattan’s Chinatown\, offering an intimate exploration of identity\, belonging\, and the everyday moments that shape our understanding of home. \nSince 2003\, Holton has immersed himself in the life of the Lam family\, capturing both the private and public dimensions of their world with an unfiltered\, empathetic lens. What began as an artistic inquiry into his own Chinese heritage has evolved into a lifelong commitment to storytelling—one that reflects the complexities of family\, migration\, and cultural hybridity in contemporary America. \nA lifelong New Yorker of mixed Chinese and American descent\, Holton has long grappled with a sense of detachment from his Chinese roots. His photographic journey with the Lams became both a creative and personal act of connection\, a way to bridge the gaps in his own identity through the lens of another family’s experiences. The resulting images document adolescence\, marriage\, resilience\, and the quiet\, unscripted moments that define family life. \nPresented at a time when Chinatown\, like many immigrant communities\, faces profound social and economic shifts\, The Lams of Ludlow Street serves as both a visual archive and a meditation on what it means to belong. Holton’s images remind us of the power of long-term storytelling—of what it means to bear witness to time\, change\, and human connection. \nPhoto credit: Thomas Holton

DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. As a completely volunteer-run organization\, we are so grateful for your financial support! \nwww.aajil.org \nwww.instagram.com/aajil_org/ \n \nYou will be able to access the link by signing into your Eventbrite and viewing links from Get Tickets or going the link under Location with View Event Details. \nApplication for our Formations Program ’25-’26 available now.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Tracy Slater\, author of the new book Together in Manzanar: The True Story of a Japanese Jewish Family in an American Concentration Camp\, and Densho Content Director Brian Niiya. \nTogether in Manzanar tells the fascinating and little-known story of prominent labor and antifascist activists Elaine Yoneda\, the child of Russian Jewish immigrants\, and her husband Karl\, a Kibei who had cut his union organizing teeth in Hiroshima before returning to California. This new narrative history follows the Yonedas as they navigate forced removal and incarceration during WWII\, bringing with it a series of painful choices and conflicting loyalties\, upheavals and violence\, and a quest to survive with their children safe\, their family whole\, and their ethics intact.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Pornsak Pichetshote\, J. Holtham\, Michael Lee Harris and Michael Walsh (The Horizon Experiment)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in a discussion with the creative team behind the critically acclaimed comic anthology\, The Horizon Experiment\,  a collection of five one-shots by some of the most celebrated names in comics\, literature\, TV\, and film\, providing pilots for new series featuring a Chinese James Bond\, a Muslim exorcist\, a reverse Indiana Jones\, East African werewolves living in Miami\, and an Evil Dead for black nerds! \nAuthor Bios  \n \nPornsak Pichetshote started his career as a Thai-American rising star editor at DC’s Vertigo imprint\, his books being nominated for dozens of Eisner awards — from the award-winning Daytripper to critical darling Sweet Tooth. He left Vertigo to become an executive in DC Entertainment’s media team\, where he started and oversaw DC’s TV department. His critical and commercial horor book Infidel marked his first major work as a comics writer. His current work with Image Comics is the Eisner- and Harvey-winning The Good Asian\, which he’s currently adapting for television with James Wan’s Atomic Monster. \n \nJ. Holtham is an American screenwriter\, best known for his work on TV shows such as Cloak and Dagger\, Jessica Jones\, and Supergirl. He recently broke into Marvel Comics with Bishop- War College\, and is bringing back fan favorite nineties character\, Night Thrasher\, for his first solo series in 30 years. \n \nAfrican-American cartoonist Michael Lee Harris is one of indie comics’ most singular voices. A jack of all trades\, he is the creator\, writer\, and artist of Black Hitler and Choco Leche while also illustrating such eclectic and distinct titles as The Black Wraith\, Berlin\, and 1945: The True Untold Story in his unique style. \n \nIn 2013\, Michael Walsh broke into comics with the Image Comics book series COMEBACK. Shortly after\, Michael contributed art on a follow-up comic to the hit television series The X-Files for IDW. Then\, in the following years\, he worked primarily with Marvel Comics on superhero properties such as Spider-Man\, The Avengers and the X-Men. He also adapted the Star Wars film The Last Jedi as a comic book mini-series. And created art for the DC/Dark Horse crossover event comic\, Black Hammer/Justice League. \nIn 2021\, Michael returned to creator-owned comics\, creating the hit ongoing Image series THE SILVER COIN and the viral webcomic The Sleep Stories. In 2022\, he released his middle-grade fantasy original graphic novel The Oates & The Elphyne\, published by Humanoids BIG. \n\n\n\n\nAssistive Listening and ASL\nASL interpretation and real-time (CART) captioning available upon request. SUMMARY:In-Store: Joseph Lee: Nothing More of This Land w/ Leslie Jamison
DESCRIPTION:“A powerful indictment of the colonial mindset that firmly balances an ode to people\, to place\, to remaining.” —Hanif Abdurraqib\n\n\nEvent guidelines: \n\nAll attendees are strongly encouraged to wear a face mask at all times.\nTickets are limited to restrict capacity at our store\, and each ticket will include either a copy of the featured book or a $10 Books Are Magic gift card.\nAdditional copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.\nA signing will follow the talk.\nHome address is collected for contact tracing purposes; it will not be used otherwise.\nThe event will also be livestreamed for free here: https://youtube.com/live/UCQr53yq3GE\nAs a reminder: If you are not feeling well\, please do not come to the event\, even if you have a ticket; email us and we’ll work it out.\n\nIf you have any questions regarding these guidelines or to request accessibility accommodations\, please contact eventhelp@booksaremagic.net. \nThis event is presented in partnership with the American Indian Community House\, a community-based organization\, mandated to improve the status of Native Americans\, and to foster inter-cultural understanding. \nFrom award-winning journalist Joseph Lee\, a sweeping\, personal exploration of Indigenous identity and the challenges facing Indigenous people around the world. \nBefore Martha’s Vineyard became one of the most iconic vacation destinations in the country\, it was home to the Wampanoag people. Today\, as tourists flock to the idyllic beaches\, the island has become increasingly unaffordable for tribal members\, with nearly three-quarters now living off-island. Growing up Aquinnah Wampanoag\, journalist Joseph Lee grappled with what this situation meant for his tribe\, how the community can continue to grow\, and more broadly\, what it means to be Indigenous. \nIn Nothing More of This Land\, Lee weaves his own story and that of his family into a panoramic narrative of Indigenous life around the world. He takes us from the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard to the icy Alaskan tundra\, the smoky forests of Northern California to the halls of the United Nations\, and beyond. Along the way he meets activists fighting to protect their land\, families clashing with their own tribal leaders\, and communities working to reclaim tradition. \nTogether\, these stories reject stereotypes to show the diversity of Indigenous people today and chart a way past the stubborn legacy of colonialism. \n  \nJoseph Lee is an Aquinnah Wampanoag writer based in New York City. He has an MFA from Columbia University and teaches creative writing at Mercy University. His writing has been published in The Guardian\, BuzzFeed News\, Vox\, Electric Literature\, High Country News\, and more. He was a Margins Fellow at the Asian American Writers Workshop and a Senior Indigenous Affairs Fellow at Grist. He has won multiple awards from the Indigenous Journalists Association for environmental coverage\, health coverage\, and beat reporting and this book was awarded a 2024 Silvers Grant for Work in Progress. Follow him on X at @JosephVLee and on Instagram at @Joseph.V.Lee. \nLeslie Jamison is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Splinters\, The Recovering\, and The Empathy Exams; the collection of essays Make It Scream\, Make It Burn\, a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award; and the novel The Gin Closet\, a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize. She writes regularly for The New Yorker and her work has appeared in many places including The New York Times\, the Virginia Quarterly Review\, and the New York Review of Books. She teaches at Columbia University and lives in Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:We’re Not White: Discussing MENA Visibility in NYC
DESCRIPTION:When Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) communities are erased in data\, we’re erased in real life too. \n\nIt means we don’t get funding for our schools or language support for our families.\nIt means our health data is inaccurate and our communities are misdiagnosed.\nIt means our stories are overlooked in media\, politics\, and research.\nIt means we’re hyper-visible when we’re targeted but invisible when we need help.\n\nThis Thursday July 17\, we’re gathering at Qahwah House in Astoria to name what’s happening and reclaim our visibility. \nMENA communities are erased in state data and forced into the “white” category on the Census. This erasure has real\, daily impacts. It leaves our cultures misunderstood\, health needs unmet\, languages unsupported\, and our kids grow up without seeing themselves reflected. Our stories remain untold\, struggles hidden\, and our communities denied the chance to be fully seen\, heard\, and valued. \nJoin us for a conversation led by North African creatives\, including Aymann Ismail and Zina Louhaichy\, where we’ll share stories and explore why visibility matters\, building understanding within our community. \nThe night will open with a poetry performance and continue with a fireside chat on the MENA experience in NYC\, from the Census to the streets. \nYou’ll hear from: \nMuna Faiz Abdelwahab\, a Sudanese poet and humanitarian whose poetry opens up space for our complex\, beautiful identities \nZina Louhaichy\, a Moroccan Italian actress and designer challenging narrow Western views of North Africa through fashion and film \nAymann Ismail\, a journalist\, storyteller and the author of ‘Becoming Baba’ whose work exposes the cracks in American systems and uplifts MENA voices across media and culture \nMohamed Attia\, a former street vendor with over a decade of organizing experience and now leads the Street Vendor Project\, championing the rights of immigrant and working class communities \nMona Elboghdadi\, Malikah’s own Immigrant Program Director building grassroots safety and resistance with North African immigrant women \nWe’ll close with a community activity that invites you to share your stories and your vision for what true representation could look like. \nThis night is more than a conversation. It’s a chance to gather in our truths\, to challenge systems that erase us\, and to build power through connection over coffee. \nWe hope you’ll be there!

SUMMARY:Comedy: Ricky Sim: Coming Out to Dead People
DESCRIPTION:Following sold-out shows and multiple rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe and London’s Soho Theatre\, “Coming Out to Dead People” is making its Joe’s Pub debut. This comedy solo show is based on the time when comedian Ricky Sim was grappling with the decision to come out to his Chinese-Malaysian immigrant mother\, just as she was diagnosed with terminal cancer – talk about good timing. Combining stand-up and storytelling\, the show explores growing up as a gaysian in the noughties in NY\, learning how to keep his first boyfriend with the help of the rapper Sean Paul\, while navigating the complexity of coming out\, alongside the intersection of racial and cultural identity. Ricky Sim is a lawyer-turned-comedian originally from Malaysia. As a standup\, he has opened for Julia Scotti (America’s Got Talent) and Marcia Belsky (Comedy Central) and was featured in the New York Comedy Festival\, and Asian Comedy Festival. “Coming Out to Dead People” was selected as one of the Offest finalists of the 2024 Off-West End Awards (OFFIES). \nPhoto Credit: Arin Sang-urai

SUMMARY:Birds Flying Backwards: Healing Arts for Caribbean Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Building solidarity across NYC’s expansive Caribbean community through the transformative power of art.\n\n\nBirds Flying Backwards: Healing Arts for Caribbean Solidarity \nJoin us for a day of healing arts for Caribbean solidarity at MoCADA on Saturday\, July 19 from 1-5 pm. We encourage folks to stay for the full program\, and will be using the RSVP headcount to provide nourishment. Please let us know if your RSVP status changes. \n🌺POLITICAL & COMMUNAL GROUNDING \n🌺VOICE HEALING WORKSHOP \n🌺GUIDED MEDITATION \n🌺DEEP LISTENING SESSION \n🌺ZINE MAKING \n🌺TAROT \n🌺CARIBBEAN FOOD & DRINK \n🌺BUILDING with NYC-based organizations that you can join for the long haul \n& so much more. \n📌 The aim of Birds Flying Backwards is to build solidarity across NYC’s expansive Caribbean community. Together we will center the lived experience of those most impacted by gender-based violence\, seed new relationships\, and align our collective visions for a most liberated future. Utilizing the transformative power of art\, we’ll strategize plans for further educating/agitating/organizing our communities. \n🌈🏳️‍⚧️ This space will prioritize the safety of our queer and trans Caribbean siblings\, and in doing so will make sure everyone\, including those most impacted by gender-based violence and racism in our community\, are well and cared for. \n💸 Birds Flying Backwards is free and open to all\, but donations are encouraged (especially from allies) and will be going towards: Connek JA\, a resource center for LGBTQIA+ Caribbean people worldwide\, and Connecting Humanity to provide e-sims for G@Z@ns resisting g3n0cid3. \n♿️ The space is wheelchair accessible via elevator. Otherwise\, you can enter the space via stairs or escalator. \n😷 As we prepare to gather in person\, we ask everyone to please take a Covid test before arriving on July 19\, and bring a photo of their negative test. For those who can’t test at home\, we will have tests onsite but if someone tests positive they will be turned away\, hence the importance of them testing before. Masks will also be available at the event. \n🎀 Organized by Priya Florence Dadlani and supported by Asian American Arts Alliance and MoCADA\, stewards of the 2024-2025 Bandung Residency. \n🎨 Flyer by the one & only Neha Shetty.
