SUMMARY:Broadway: Maybe Happy Ending
DESCRIPTION:Emmy® and Golden Globe Award® winner Darren Criss (Little Shop of Horrors) returns to Broadway alongside Helen J Shen in the new romantic musical comedy MAYBE HAPPY ENDING.  A New York Times Critics’ Pick \nInside a one-room apartment on the outskirts of Seoul\, Oliver lives a happily quiet life\, listening to jazz records and caring for his favorite plant. But what else is there to do when you’re a Helperbot 3\, a robot that has long been retired and considered obsolete? When his fellow Helperbot neighbor Claire asks to borrow his charger\, what starts as an awkward encounter leads to a unique friendship\, a surprising adventure\, and maybe even…love? \nWinner of the Richard Rodgers Award\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is the offbeat and captivating story of two outcasts near the end of their warranty who discover that even robots can be swept off their feet. Helmed by visionary director and Tony Award® winner Michael Arden (Parade\, Once on This Island)\, with a dazzling scenic design by Dane Laffrey (A Christmas Carol) and book\, music\, and lyrics by the internationally acclaimed duo Will Aronson and Hue Park\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is a fresh\, original musical about the small things that make any life worth living.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:AAPI Art and Power Intersect: Creative Media for Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Hear from artists who uplift AANHPI voices\, help inform our communities\, and advocate for our rights through their work at this virtual event on Friday\, May 30th 2 PM – 3 PM ET. As we close out Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM)\, we reflect on how AAPI women and gender expansive people use diverse media to empower our communities and inspire acts of resistance\, throughout history and today. Panelists will discuss how AAPI artists are using their platforms to change the world; the idea that art is intrinsically “political”; and the history of art in movement work. There will be time for Q&A at the end of the panel. Please register to be able to submit questions.\n\n\nPanel: \n\nNatalie Bui\nJanet S. Kim\nAmanda Phingbodhipakkiya

SUMMARY:DJ Rekha in Washington Park
DESCRIPTION:Come dance with DJ Rekha in Washington Park!\n\n\nDJ Rekha will be in Washington Park in celebration of Meena Hasan’s gallery show in the Old Stone House. \n \nAbout the gallery:\nThings Fall Apart: Meena Hasan at the Old Stone House \nOn View: May 2\, 2025 – July 6\, 2025 \nIn collaboration with Dylan Yeats and Imran Khan \nThis site-specific installation draws inspiration from the fact that British commander Charles Cornwallis\, who occupied the Old Stone House during the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776\, later defeated one of the fiercest opponents of colonialism in India\, Tipu Sultan\, the Tiger of Mysore. Their dynamic dub and hip-hop informed DJ sets often incorporate South Asian Diasporic dance music with ears to a global sound that resonates with dancefloors across the planet. They are the founder of Basement Bhangra™\, Bollywood Disco\, Lipstick Optional\, and co-founder of Mutiny (with Vivek Bald) and Ronak (with Atif Ateeq) club nights. \nAs a sound designer and producer Rekha worked for the TONY award-winning Broadway Show\, “Bridge and Tunnel\,” and received a Drama Desk Award nomination for their work on the play “Rafta Rafta.” Rekha was the associate producer for the NPR Radio Documentary\, “A Feet in Two Worlds.” They created the opening theme (with Raj Makhija and David Sharma) for Padma Lakshmi’s Hulu show\, “Taste the Nation.” They have done remixes for artists that range from Meredith Monk to Major Lazer. \nDJ Rekha was NYU’s A/P/A Artist-in-Residence for 2006-2007. They have received numerous community awards and in 2009 were inducted into the New York City’s Peoples’ Hall of Fame. Tickets may be purchased at the door on the day of the event\, starting at 2:30 PM\, if capacity allows. \nKnow Before You Go \nFamily Festivals are bustling events with lots of sights\, sounds\, and aromas. There is limited stroller parking available\, with a staff-operated lift used to reach the restrooms and lower level spaces. We recommend families with sensory concerns join our MOCACREATE events to celebrate the holiday. \nDue to the limited capacity of the museum and efforts to adhere to safety guidelines\, families may have to wait to enter the museum during peak times. \n\n\nMOCA’s Family Festival Series is supported with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, and with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature.
