SUMMARY:Broadway: Maybe Happy Ending
DESCRIPTION:Emmy® and Golden Globe Award® winner Darren Criss (Little Shop of Horrors) returns to Broadway alongside Helen J Shen in the new romantic musical comedy MAYBE HAPPY ENDING.  A New York Times Critics’ Pick \nInside a one-room apartment on the outskirts of Seoul\, Oliver lives a happily quiet life\, listening to jazz records and caring for his favorite plant. But what else is there to do when you’re a Helperbot 3\, a robot that has long been retired and considered obsolete? When his fellow Helperbot neighbor Claire asks to borrow his charger\, what starts as an awkward encounter leads to a unique friendship\, a surprising adventure\, and maybe even…love? \nWinner of the Richard Rodgers Award\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is the offbeat and captivating story of two outcasts near the end of their warranty who discover that even robots can be swept off their feet. Helmed by visionary director and Tony Award® winner Michael Arden (Parade\, Once on This Island)\, with a dazzling scenic design by Dane Laffrey (A Christmas Carol) and book\, music\, and lyrics by the internationally acclaimed duo Will Aronson and Hue Park\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is a fresh\, original musical about the small things that make any life worth living.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Avani Patel: Connection
DESCRIPTION:Connection is a solo exhibition by Avani Patel\, presented at Evercore’s New York City offices. \nExcerpt from Patel’s artist statement: \n“Art has been an integral part of my life since I was young. I used to go to the theater with my sister for her rehearsals and dance shows. Seeing the colorful costumes\, flowing dresses and festivity of these moments made me feel joyful; I felt as though the colors were speaking to me…I often draw and paint things that I see in my everyday surroundings\, personal experiences\, and memories. I use mark-making and repetition as tools to signify change in nature\, the passage of time\, and the retention and rejection of memory. My work often takes the form of visual studies and drawings that I work on for months as a time. This process helps me understand colors and patterns\, which then allows me to transfer my ideas to large-scale paintings and public projects.” \nFor inquiries\, please email info@cueartfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: In Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Who is in our corner when we need help?\nWho do we call on when we are down?\nWho backs us up when we are cornered?\nIn Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond explores the personal and professional support that artists of Asian descent received during and after the Asian American Art Movements. This companion exhibition to Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) at New York University’s 80WSE Gallery\, invites five artists of the three key art collectives and organizations featured in Legacies to show alongside five non-Asian American artists who supported their work and growth over the years. These relationships range from recently made friendships to lifelong partnerships and even marriage: Kathleen Foster joins Ching Ming Cheung; Charles Luce joins Helen Oji; Howardena Pindell joins Arlan Huang; Shellyne Rodriguez joins Tomie Arai; and Arleen Schloss joins Nina Kuo. To highlight AAAC’s collection and its ongoing solidarity-building\, In Our Corner presents five works by non-Asian American artists from the collection\, Columbia Fiero\, Kitty Katz\, Donald Lipski\, Eva Mantell\, and Sepp Seitz. As the hosting institution for In Our Corner\, Think!Chinatown’s commission of Black Gotham’s Grand Rising and its inclusion in the show demonstrates the organization’s ongoing exchange and collaboration with communities of color. Through interviews and writings from the artists\, In Our Corner highlights these bonds and explores how artist collectives/organizations intersected and fostered connections. \nNovember 16\, 2024 – March 2025 \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, November 16\, 2024\, 3-5PM \nThink!Chinatown’s Studio – 1 Pike Street\, New York\, NY 10002 \nPhoto Credit “Untitled” by Sepp Seitz

SUMMARY:MOCA PRESENTS - Threads of Home\, A Participatory Theatre Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore “home” during Lunar New Year in Threads of Home\, an immersive theater workshop with personal reflections.\n\n\nDuring the Lunar New Year\, family reunions can be moments we eagerly anticipate—or seek to avoid. The concepts of “family” and “home” mean vastly different things to each of us. How do we then celebrate the Lunar New Year? What might a reunion dinner look like? Director Zhenyu Meng (PhD in Theatre and Film Studies from the Shanghai Theatre Academy) collaborates with SpArkling Theatre Studio to present New Year’s Eve Dinner at the Gene Frankel Theatre from January 17 to 19. \nThe Museum of Chinese in America is delighted to host Director Zhenyu Meng and the production team for a participatory theater workshop\, Threads of Home. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to glimpse the creative process behind the production\, using Chekhov’s acting techniques. Participants will step into the floor plan of a typical northern Chinese household and reflect on their personal experiences. Through guided theatrical activities\, participants will engage in an immersive exploration of “home\,” where every detail — from props to dialogue to imagined memories — carries intentional meaning. This workshop is open to general public and will be conducted in English. \n  \nABOUT Zhenyu Meng \nZhenyu Meng is a performance instructor\, theatre director\, and PhD candidate in Theatre and Film Studies at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. A researcher and practitioner of the Michael Chekhov Technique. She is temporarily based at the CUNY Graduate Center doing acting training method research. Her directorial works include Requiem\, The Blue Bird\, Forever Young\, To Be Or Not To Be\, and Classic of Mountains and Seas\, among others. Frequently featured in the Shanghai International Arts Festival. \nABOUT SpArkling Theatre Studio \nFounded in January 2024 by Annora Dong (董语柔) and Sophia Zhu (朱婕宁)\, SpArkling Theatre Studio was born from the creative synergy and unique resonance between their distinct artistic sensibilities. The two founders first met at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in the Experimental Theatre Wing. Drawing inspiration and creative energy from diverse places such as New York and Shanghai\, SpArkling is dedicated to illuminating people and the world through avant-garde experimental theatre and physical theatre forms. The studio’s core mission is to transcend cultural boundaries through art\, fostering profound human connections and advancing cross-cultural artistic exchange on the international stage. \nABOUT New Year’s Eve Dinner \nOn New Year’s Eve\, an ordinary northern Chinese family gathers to welcome the arrival of the New Year. Yet\, what lingers in the air is not celebration\, but unspoken tension and heavy silence. The story unfolds within the close quarters of a cramped two-bedroom apartment\, where every piece of furniture and every crack in the walls\, bears the weight of lingering emotions and unresolved conflicts that bind and divide the family. The show will be bilingual in both Mandarin Chinese and English with a corresponding introduction and explanation of each scene. The story is depicted through visual pictures. Audiences with all backgrounds and cultures are welcome. \nFor show information\, please visit: http://www.genefrankeltheatre.com/now-playing.html

With the perfect dress: a poofy\, sparkly Cinderella dress that makes Mai look like the movie star she dreams of being! But when Mai’s father suggests that she wears an áo dài\, a traditional Vietnamese outfit\, to her Ba Noi’s party\, Mai is disappointed. Stars don’t wear áo dài\, she thinks. Then Ba tells her the story of a true star\, her very own Ba Noi\, who sewed beautiful\, highly sought-after áo dài in Vietnam and brought her magic with her when she immigrated to the United States. \nSo maybe stars wear áo dài after all! But how can Ba Noi know what Mai’s wearing when Ba Noi is losing her eyesight? Ba tells her every áo dài is sewn with love\, and the beauty of love is that you don’t need to see it to know it’s here. \nWhen Monique Truong (pronounced Trurn) was six years old\, she came to the United States as a refugee from S. Vietnam. She and her family then lived in North Carolina\, Ohio\, and Texas. She is the bestselling author of The Book of Salt\, which was a New York Times Notable Book\, a PEN/Robert W. Her home is now in Brooklyn\, New York\, where she writes novels and libretti\, always cooks enough to have leftovers\, and takes long afternoon naps. She was also once a lawyer with degrees from Columbia Law School and Yale College. Mai’s Áo Dài is her debut picture book. \nThai Nguyen (pronounced Tie-Win)\, born in My Tho\, learned to sew at the age of nine sitting in on classes at his parents’ sewing school in Saigon\, Vietnam. In 1993\, the family immigrated to the United States\, where Thai is now a fashion designer\, based in Orange County\, California. His designs\, for clients such as Jennifer Lopez\, Ariana Grande\, Kelly Marie Tran\, Ali Wong\, Katherine McPhee\, and Cindy Crawford\, have been featured in top publications and have graced the red carpets of the Met Gala\, the Oscars\, the Grammys\, and film and television premieres. Thai’s love of the áo dài\, this iconic symbol of Vietnam\, has been and will continue to be the wellspring for all his creations. Mai’s Áo Dài is his debut picture book.
