SUMMARY:The Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean
DESCRIPTION:Dan Lie\, Memory Stick ou Pau de Memória\, 2015. (Image: Edouard Fraipont) \nThe Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean is the first exhibition in New York City to center the artistic production of the Asian diaspora in the region from the 1940s to the present. Focusing on postwar and contemporary art\, the exhibition showcases the work of twenty-seven artists from fourteen countries working in a range of artistic mediums including painting\, sculpture\, performance\, photography\, and video\, to shed light into strategies and themes that resonate across a wide array of Asian diasporic practice throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. \nThe exhibition embraces and performs the multiple and interrelated meanings embedded in the notion of appearance\, inspired by Japanese Brazilian artist Lydia Okumura’s 1975 print by the same title. From acts of appearing and becoming visible—including different types of apparitions—to the idea of impressions and physical resemblance\, artists in the show grapple with the complexities of negotiating (in)visibility\, revisiting and remaking family archives and stories\, and engaging and reconfiguring spiritual practices. The show also addresses abstraction as a formal strategy linked to language\, the senses\, and the body in the context of the Americas’ postwar art. \nConceived as an appearance in and of itself\, the show sheds light on the often-overlooked experiences and artistic trajectories of Asian diasporic subjects and collectives across Latin America and the Caribbean\, casting them as both grounded in their particular context and constitutive of broader transnational histories. \nTo accompany the show\, we will present a series of public programs and publish a catalogue. \nThis exhibition is co-curated by Tie Jojima\, associate curator and manager of Exhibitions at Americas Society in New York\, and Yudi Rafael\, independent curator and researcher based in São Paulo\, Brazil.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit - Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001)
DESCRIPTION:Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) is an expansive survey of rarely-seen artwork and archival material by artists that constitute and exceed “Asian American\,” a label denoting a cultural and national identity invented in 1968. Utilizing an interdisciplinary and research-driven praxis\, Legacies uncovers how artists of Asian descent have historically negotiated identity in America as a set of situated practices and institutional structures amidst transnational diasporas\, racial phantasms\, and political imaginaries.\n\nPresenting over 90 artists and collectives\, Legacies is the first institutional survey exhibition focusing on artists of Asian descent who were based in New York City.\n\n\nLegacies features works – paintings\, drawings\, sculpture\, and new media\, among other mediums – that serve to complicate the idea of defining “Asian American art” as singular and static through the lens of art history\, cultural studies\, and sociology. Recognizing that “identity-based” categories of art are bound to the dominant racial ideology and political narrative of a nation\, the exhibition instead focuses on a multiplicity of subjectivities\, political horizons\, and artistic expressions to interrogate life in America.\n\nIn addition to aesthetic concerns such as figuration\, abstraction and materiality\, the exhibition tracks how these artists addressed migration\, displacement\, racism\, cultural autonomy\, Western imperialism\, societal violence\, and representations of sexuality and gender through the decades.\n\nLegacies also constellates three key artist collectives and organizations: Godzilla: Asian American Art Network; the Basement Workshop; and Asian American Arts Centre. All three organizations were artistic\, social\, and political hubs for diasporic Asian artists in New York that intersected with other marginalized communities.\n\nThe exhibition also features newly commissioned installations\, including a large-scale Washington Square Windows installation by new-media artist Shu Lea Cheang connected to the 30th anniversary of her groundbreaking film\, Fresh Kill (1994).\n\nFilmmaker Rea Tajiri presents an assemblage sculpture that expands on her groundbreaking History and Memory: For Akiko and Takashige (1991)\, a meditation on her family history and Japanese and Japanese American internment during World War II.\n\nOrganized by Howie Chen\, Curator at 80WSE\, Jayne Cole Southard\, PhD.\, CUNY\, and christina ong\, PhD. \n \nProduced by Jon Huron\, 80WSE.  Gini Yu Pei Lee\, Curatorial Assistant. Gracia Brown and Daniella Occhineri\, Research Assistants. Kate Edelson\, Exhibition Registrar.\n \nThe exhibition’s presentation is made possible by Teiger Foundation.  \n\nSpecial thanks for the support of the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, Squid Frames\, CHENZO.STUDIO\, and Fales Library and Special Collections. Equipment provided in part by Lower East Side Ecology Center and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.\n\n\nImage credit:  Bridge Magazine Vol. 1 No. 6. New York: Basement Workshop\, 1972

SUMMARY:Broadway: Yellow Face
DESCRIPTION:Discount 30% off with code: AANHPI \nTony Award® winner and three-time Pulitzer finalist David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) will make his Roundabout debut with the Broadway premiere of Yellow Face\, his hilarious is-he-or-isn’t-he comedy of identity\, show business\, and (perhaps) autobiography. Starring Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) and directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman (Violet).  \nInspired by real events\, the playwright’s fictionalized doppelgänger protests yellowface casting in Miss Saigon\, only to mistakenly cast a white actor as the Asian lead in his own play. This Obie Award-winning and Pulitzer finalist play is a laugh-out-loud farce about the complexities of race.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Avani Patel: Connection
DESCRIPTION:Connection is a solo exhibition by Avani Patel\, presented at Evercore’s New York City offices. \nExcerpt from Patel’s artist statement: \n“Art has been an integral part of my life since I was young. I used to go to the theater with my sister for her rehearsals and dance shows. Seeing the colorful costumes\, flowing dresses and festivity of these moments made me feel joyful; I felt as though the colors were speaking to me…I often draw and paint things that I see in my everyday surroundings\, personal experiences\, and memories. I use mark-making and repetition as tools to signify change in nature\, the passage of time\, and the retention and rejection of memory. My work often takes the form of visual studies and drawings that I work on for months as a time. This process helps me understand colors and patterns\, which then allows me to transfer my ideas to large-scale paintings and public projects.” \nFor inquiries\, please email info@cueartfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Localized History Workshop Series – The Missing Stories: South Asian American History from the 18th Century to Today
DESCRIPTION:South Asian Americans have been a presence in the United States for more than 250 years. Early immigrants from South Asia worked on farms and factories\, helped build railroads\, fought for India’s freedom from British rule\, and struggled for equal rights in the United States. Today\, more than 6.1 million individuals in the U.S. trace their heritage to South Asia\, the fastest growing immigrant group in the country. South Asian American stories are an integral part of the American story\, yet little information is available to the public about these stories. \nIn “The Missing Stories\,” SAADA’s Executive Director Samip Mallick will cover how communities come to be excluded from the archival record and how we can address these absences. Samip will introduce South Asian American history (1800s to present) and will also discuss how community-based archives can become sites for liberatory memory work by introducing the audience to SAADA’s archival collections\, programs\, and participatory storytelling projects.

SUMMARY:Ken Liu – Laozi’s Dao De Jing
DESCRIPTION:MOCA invites you to a thought-provoking conversation with award-winning author Ken Liu as he illustrates his new translation of Laozi’s Dao De Jing. Written around 400 BC\, this foundational Chinese philosophical text resonates with themes of humility\, resilience\, and the search for harmony. Liu’s fresh interpretation offers more than just a translation; it provides a deeply personal journey through Laozi’s wisdom\, addressing contemporary challenges with profound insight. \nLiu\, renowned for his speculative fiction and translations of contemporary Chinese science fiction (including the bestselling The Three-Body Problem)\, takes readers beyond traditional\, authoritative annotations\, offering instead an unapologetically subjective approach through a series of interstitial entries. His work encourages readers to embrace the constant change and flow of life\, ultimately finding solace in the Dao. Moderated by Yifan Wu\, MOCA’s Director of Programs\, this event promises a captivating exploration of the timeless relevance of Laozi’s teachings and the art of translation.

SUMMARY:I'm Laughing Because I'm Crying by Youngmi Mayer w/ John deBary
DESCRIPTION:Join Youngmi Mayer and John deBary for a conversation celebrating the launch of I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying!\n\n\nPlease note that attendees who purchase their book ahead of time (in the ticketing options) will receive priority in the signing line after the book talk\, and will have their books signed first!\nUpon arrival\, you will check in with a staff member and receive your number in the signing line.\n\nBooks will also be available for sale at the event itself\, until sold out. \n \nCan’t make it? Pre-order your signed copy here. \n \nPlease also consider making a donation with your RSVP! Donations go to Seward Park Campus Library (@SparkCampusLibrary)\, a proud NYC Public School high school library. Our library serves the five high schools in the building\, and in partnership with New Design High School\, we have been able to build a podcast/music recording studio to help students build 21st century skills. To that end\, we are in the process of building MarkerSpark – a creative Makerspace focused on 3D engineering and design. Your donations are crucial to making this happen. Help us build out the vision of next year’s leaders. \n \nABOUT THE BOOK \nFrom standup comedian Youngmi Mayer\, an unforgettable memoir written with “raw\, enviable freedom that simply floors you\,” interrogating whiteness\, gender\, and sexuality in America\, navigating a tumultuous childhood in Korea and Saipan\, and coming to terms with her parents’ shortcomings (Michelle Zauner). \n“Do you know what happens if you laugh while crying? Hair grows out of your butthole.” It was a constant truism Youngmi Mayer’s mother would say threateningly after she would make her daughter laugh while crying. Her mother used it to cheer her up in moments when she could tell Youngmi was overtaken with grief. The humorous saying would never fail to lighten the mood\, causing both daughter and mother to laugh and cry at the same time. Her mother had learned this trick from her mother\, and her mother had learned this from her mother before her: it had also helped an endless string of her family laugh through suffering. \n \nIn I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying\, Youngmi jokes through the retelling of her childhood as an offbeat biracial kid in Saipan\, a place next to a place that Americans might know. She jokes through her difficult adolescence where she must parent her own parents: a mother who married her husband because he looked like white Jesus (and the singer of The Bee Gees). And with humor and irreverence and full-throated openness\, she jokes even while sharing the story of what her family went through during the last century of colonialism and war in Korea\, while reflecting how years later\, their wounds affect her in New York City as a single mom\, all the while interrogating whiteness\, gender\, and sexuality. \n \nYoungmi jokes through these stories in hopes of passing onto the reader what her family passed down to her: The gift of laughing while crying. The gift of a hairy butthole. Because throughout it all\, the one thing she learned was one cannot exist without the other. And like a yin and yang\, this duality is reflected in this whip-smart\, heart-wrenching\, and disarmingly funny memoir told by a bright new voice with so much heart and wisdom.

SUMMARY:Printing the Battlefront with Jo-Ann Wong
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, cartographers joined the ranks of journalists in the efforts to convey information quickly and effectively to the public. Where geographical accuracy had once been a map’s prime aspiration\, the immediacy of the moment and the desire for editorial flair created a demand for maps that reported current events and military strategies with illustrations\, expanded infographics\, and eye-catching fonts. Using materials from the Library’s collections\, Jo-Ann Wong\, reference librarian at the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division\, demonstrates the ways in which new needs and desire for information reshaped cartographic traditions.

SUMMARY:In Celebration of FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:Come join Belladonna’s first full-length book launch since 2020 at our first partnership with AAWW!\n\n\nCome join Belladonna’s first full-length book launch since 2020 at our first partnership with AAWW! We are so excited to be able to celebrate the release of Mia You’s book FESTIVAL with two other fabulous Korean American poets who have released their own pieces this year. \nThe festival is a space of communion and celebration\, a romanticized collision of bodies\, music and magic. The revolution will look like a festival\, we’ve been told by philosophers\, writers\, artists\, and marketers. But the festival is also\, of course\, the space of formalizing ideology\, ritualizing the consumption and violence that propels existing structures of power. \nThis poetry collection views the migrant\, female body as both the glorified and martyred totem of the festival-of-all-festivals we call globalization. Drawing from sources such as Sigmund Freud\, James George Frazer\, H.D.\, the Situationist International\, seventeenth century narratives of Dutch sailors shipwrecked on the Korean peninsula\, the rise of K-pop and the “Korean Wave\,” and a zoo-breaking gorilla named Bokito\, Festival features kaleidoscopic poetic sequences aiming to show that if anything universal is to be found in lyric poetry’s “I\,” it is the result of centuries-long entanglements and contaminations\, and of the bodies made to bear these exchanges\, to give birth to this century’s globalized subject. \n__ \nMia You is author of the poetry collections Festival (Belladonna* Collaborative\, 2024) and I\, Too\, Dislike It (1913 Press\, 2016)\, as well as the chapbooks Rouse the Ruse and the Rush (Nion Editions\, 2023) and Objective Practice (Achiote Press\, 2007). Her poems have appeared in Boston Review\, Chicago Review\, Cordite Poetry Review\, the PEN Poetry Series\, and Poetry. She currently teaches Anglophone literature at the Universiteit Utrecht and in the Critical Studies program at the Sandberg Institute. \nStine An (안수연) is a Korean American poet\, literary translator\, and performer based in Queens. Her work has appeared in Best Literary Translations 2024\, Best American Experimental Writing 2018\, Electric Literature\, Black Warrior Review\, World Literature Today\, The Southern Review\, and elsewhere. She holds a BA in Literature from Harvard College and an MFA in Literary Arts from Brown University and is the recipient of fellowships and grants from The Poetry Project\, PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant\, Yaddo\, ALTA\, Vermont Studio Center\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her translations include Today’s Morning Vocabulary by Yoo Heekyung (Zephyr Press\, 2025) and Comet and Star: A Story of Cosmic Friendship\, written by the musician and composer Lee Juck and illustrated by Lee Jinhee (Enchanted Lion Books\, 2024). Her debut poetry collection\, B-Dragon Suite (Nightboat Books\, 2026)\, is a winner of the 2023 Nightboat Poetry Prize. \nJimin Seo was born in Seoul\, and immigrated to the US to join his family at the age of eight. He is the author of OSSIA\, winner of The Changes Book Prize. His most recent projects were Poems of Consumption with H. Sinno at the Barbican Centre in London\, and a site activation for salazarsequeromedina’s Open Pavilion at the 4th Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other. Violence of any kind\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, ageism\, class or casteism\, bigotry or bias toward religion or faith\, or any action or assault against marginalized identities\, is not tolerated. Those who bring harm to our community in person or online are not welcome\, and will be asked to exit the space. \nThe event will be live streamed on Zoom with auto captioning for those who cannot join us in person. For those joining us in person\, we are located on the 6th floor of 112 W 27th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues)\, there is an elevator that will take you directly to our office. To protect our friends with chemical sensitivities\, AAWW is a fragrance-free space. Masks are required for audience members for all AAWW events; if you forget yours\, one will be provided for you. We have three commercial grade air purifiers\, and a quiet room in the back should you need some space from the crowd. We highly encourage all in person guests to take a COVID test at home prior to the event. If you have had COVID or have had known contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID in the 10 days prior\, we ask you tune in for the live stream instead. Please reach out to msaleh@aaww.org for additional accessibility requests\, including ADA accessible bathrooms\, chairs with added back support\, and beyond. This space is for YOU!
