DESCRIPTION:Emerging theatre artist Yuchen Ye will premiere her newest original work\, “ACTION\,” on Saturday\, August 22\, 2026\, at 7pm at The Tank (312 W. 36th Street\, New York). Presented as part of LimeFest\, the bilingual documentary performance draws from family archives\, historical research\, and live storytelling to examine the intersections of war\, migration\, family\, and art. \n“When I was eighteen\, I discovered that my great-grandfather directed twenty-one films in 1930s China. Why did nobody ever tell me? Where can I find his films? What did he believe in as an artist? Now I step onstage\, searching through fragments for answers—in a world still falling apart.” \nPart investigation\, part performance\, “ACTION” follows Yuchen’s search to reconstruct the interrupted life of her great-grandfather\, a filmmaker whose artistic career was profoundly shaped by war and displacement. Blending live performance\, archival materials\, documentary footage\, audience interaction\, and bilingual storytelling\, the piece asks what it means to keep making art during war and migration. \nCreated and performed by Yuchen Ye\, the production is developed in collaboration with Gideon Lazarus\, Sheridan Merrick\, Alec Welhouse\, and Jieru Wang. “ACTION” connects one artist’s search to urgent questions facing our present moment: How do wars erase cultural memory? What does it mean to continue making art during political uncertainty and migration? Her theatre practice is rooted in real historical events and Chinese cultural memory\, integrating oral histories\, documentary materials\, and archival research to bring unheard stories from history to the stage. Through this practice\, she seeks to transform individual voices into a collective force for reflection and change. She is a recipient of the Contemporary Performance Award from Big Art Group and an alumna of Directors Lab North(Toronto\, Canada). Her work has been presented across China\, the U.K.\, and the U.S. MFA\, Sarah Lawrence College; BA\, Shanghai Theatre Academy.

DESCRIPTION:“What does memory taste like?” Having never celebrated a birthday\, L is throwing her dream 28th—and you’re all invited\, woohoo! \nEmerging theater artist Andi Cui is premiering her new solo play\, “This Memory Doesn’t Taste like a Birthday Cake” at Theater for the New City on Aug. 23-25\, as part of the Dream Up Theater Fest. \n“This Memory doesn’t Taste like a Birthday Cake” is a solo play inspired by real-life stories of children with incarcerated parents in China. The play digs a rabbit hole through L’s simple action of cooking favorite childhood dishes\, bringing back fragmented memories with almost neurotic details of texture\, taste\, and smell to the present stage. 2 dishes and a long awaited cake for an imagined birthday\, L unfolds her past in an intimate exploration of the childhood wounds that she once was unable to articulate. \nWritten and Directed by Andi Cui and starring Athena Yin\, this play expands beyond parental incarceration to explore the unspoken ways how love\, loss\, guilt and hope wrestel in Asian families\, and how can one make peace with a childhood fraught with regret and unresolved feelings. Can you move forward while still longing to stay within the memories?” \nThe Last Leaf is Sydney Yu’s autobiographical story\, premiering at the Tank’s LimeFest on Sunday\, August 23rd\, 9:30 pm\, 2026. It begins with her grandfather’s illness that brings her to reflect on the family she left behind. Born in Sydney\, raised in Beijing\, and now living in the US\, Sydney often thinks about how she ended up here. It begins in a dreamlike world of childhood\, fantastical love\, and memories from long\, long ago. Then reality breaks through\, and what’s left is the truth she never quite said out loud. \nThe show is an hour long with no intermission. It centers around physical theater\, pantomiming\, and monologues. The creative team includes Elie Berman as Stage Manager\, Siyin Yan as Scenic Designer\, and Ethan Ordower as Lighting Designer. The production was originally developed as Sydney’s senior thesis performance at Trinity College in Spring 2025. \nThis story is for anyone who has loved someone implicitly\, grieved someone quietly\, or wondered what home and love actually mean.
