SUMMARY:Noguchi’s New York
DESCRIPTION:In 1922\, Isamu Noguchi first moved to New York—a city that would remain his on-again\, off-again home for the remainder of his life. Though he was an avid traveler who built meaningful connections and temporary homes around the world\, Noguchi always returned to New York. It was here that he created some of his most iconic artworks and imagined countless others. \nThis exhibition examines Noguchi’s deep and dynamic relationship with New York City\, exploring how its material\, cultural\, social\, and political landscape indelibly transformed his artwork and thinking\, and how he in turn transformed the city. It also highlights Noguchi’s unflagging attempts to give back by sculpting communal spaces for exploration and play—efforts often thwarted\, most notably by the influential NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. \nNoguchi’s New York encompasses more than 50 works\, including sculptures\, project models\, photographs\, and archival materials. The exhibition also brings to life Noguchi’s visions for unrealized playgrounds and playground equipment through a series of hand-painted animated films by Jack Cunningham and Nicolas Ménard of Eastend Western. \nOrganized on the 40th anniversary of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum\, this exhibition celebrates the Museum itself as one of Noguchi’s most profound gifts to this city he called home. \nPhoto credit: Isamu Noguchi\, 1980

SUMMARY:Film: Farewell to the Highland Station
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents Kyoko Kagawa Rarities\, a series of five remarkable films starring the beloved Japanese actress\, in partnership with Anthology Film Archives\, from August 13-16\, 2026. \nFarewell to the Highland Station\nNobuo Nakagawa\, Japan\, 1951\, 35mm\, 76 min.\nIn Japanese with English subtitles. \nA botanical researcher (Michitaro Mizushima) visits a tuberculosis sanatorium in the highlands. Collecting plants in the area for his research\, he falls in love with the nurse in white (Kyoko Kagawa). \nProduced quickly to capitalize on the massive success of Minoru Obata’s hit song of the same title\, within the genre trappings of the “kayo eiga” (song film)\, Farewell to the Highland Station elevates to the sublime under the masterful direction of Nobuo Nakagawa. Known in most histories exclusively for his classics of the horror genre\, legendary critic Shiguehiko Hasumi has explained that Nakagawa is indistinguishable without this film. Something similar could also be said about Kagawa: that if this film were known\, her role in it as the young nurse would likely be amongst her most iconic. \nA revelatory film\, newly subtitled on the occasion of this series\, for what is believed to be its U.S. premiere. —Joseph Eusebio \n35mm print courtesy of the National Film Archive of Japan. \nA limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to NYC college students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.
