SUMMARY:Noguchi’s New York
DESCRIPTION:In 1922\, Isamu Noguchi first moved to New York—a city that would remain his on-again\, off-again home for the remainder of his life. Though he was an avid traveler who built meaningful connections and temporary homes around the world\, Noguchi always returned to New York. It was here that he created some of his most iconic artworks and imagined countless others. \nThis exhibition examines Noguchi’s deep and dynamic relationship with New York City\, exploring how its material\, cultural\, social\, and political landscape indelibly transformed his artwork and thinking\, and how he in turn transformed the city. It also highlights Noguchi’s unflagging attempts to give back by sculpting communal spaces for exploration and play—efforts often thwarted\, most notably by the influential NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. \nNoguchi’s New York encompasses more than 50 works\, including sculptures\, project models\, photographs\, and archival materials. The exhibition also brings to life Noguchi’s visions for unrealized playgrounds and playground equipment through a series of hand-painted animated films by Jack Cunningham and Nicolas Ménard of Eastend Western. \nOrganized on the 40th anniversary of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum\, this exhibition celebrates the Museum itself as one of Noguchi’s most profound gifts to this city he called home. \nPhoto credit: Isamu Noguchi\, 1980

DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents Kyoko Kagawa Rarities\, a series of five remarkable films starring the beloved Japanese actress\, in partnership with Anthology Film Archives\, from August 13-16\, 2026. \nDiscovered in a “New Face” contest run by the Tokyo Shimbun in 1949\, Kyoko Kagawa joined upstart film studio Shintoho at age 17\, initiating a steady stream of appearances that would establish in her image an aptitude for projecting brightness and “pure feeling.” Going freelance early in her career in 1952\, she would quickly become a staple of Japanese Cinema’s Golden Age\, becoming immortalized especially as the youngest daughter in the Yasujiro Ozu masterpiece Tokyo Story (1953). With the distinction of working with all of Japan’s “Big Four” directors (Ozu\, Kenji Mizoguchi\, Akira Kurosawa\, and Mikio Naruse) and many more of its greats (Hiroshi Shimizu\, Kozaburo Yoshimura\, Hirokazu Kore-eda\, to name a few)\, and in a career spanning over 70 years and 130 films\, Kagawa’s filmography can read like a roadmap to Japan’s cinema\, her characters meaningful guides in its living history. \nThe greatness in Kagawa’s filmography overflows\, but many of her most widely-circulated roles are in support of other leads or larger ensembles. Composed entirely of imported celluloid\, “Kyoko Kagawa Rarities” looks at the rich history from another vantage point\, and puts Kagawa\, deservedly\, in the center lane. Collecting plants in the area for his research\, he falls in love with the nurse in white (Kyoko Kagawa). \nProduced quickly to capitalize on the massive success of Minoru Obata’s hit song of the same title\, within the genre trappings of the “kayo eiga” (song film)\, Farewell to the Highland Station elevates to the sublime under the masterful direction of Nobuo Nakagawa. Known in most histories exclusively for his classics of the horror genre\, legendary critic Shiguehiko Hasumi has explained that Nakagawa is indistinguishable without this film. Why should Shozo pay heed to his new wife or his ex when the sweet purrs of Lily the cat are what makes his heart flutter? \nThe film’s titular quadrangle\, like a prism\, magnifies the competing impulses towards modernity\, tradition\, and escape. Popular comic veteran Hisaya Morishige plays the hapless Shozo\, while screen legend Isuzu Yamada plays kimono-clad ex-wife Shinako. Bursting out of a closet in full beach attire\, Kagawa is introduced as the mambo-crazed moga (modern girl) Fukuko. SUMMARY:An Evening with Jake Shimabukuro
DESCRIPTION:Since gaining prominence in the early 2000’s\, ukulele marvel Jake Shimabukuro has mesmerized audiences with his innovative and dynamic style\, taking the instrument to dizzying new heights. Over a dozen solo albums\, Shimabukuro has shown a knack for moving effortlessly between genres\, sometimes in the same song. After being taught the instrument by his mother at age four\, Jake became a local phenom\, performing on his own and in a local group Pure Heart. Early in his solo career he became a YouTube sensation when his cover of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went viral. Since then\, Jake has gone on to play the world’s most venerable venues\, from The Hollywood Bowl to Lincoln Center to the Sydney Opera House and The N.O. Jazz Fests and collaborated with some of the world’s greatest musicians\, including Yo-Yo Ma\, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones\, Jimmy Buffett\, Jack Johnson\, Bette Midler\, Ziggy Marley\, Sonny Landreth\, Billy Strings\, Lukas & Willie Nelson and Warren Haynes. Shimabukuro has also won his share of awards and\, just a few years ago he was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as a Member for the National Council on the Arts. \nOne strong thread that runs through much of Shimabukuro’s work is that of collaboration. From the Trio album to Jake & Friends to Grateful and beyond\, Shimabukuro thrives in the ability to feed off and inspire his fellow musicians. For his brand-new project Blues Experience\, Shimabukuro joins forces with his friend\, drumming legend and founding member of Fleetwood Mac\, Mick Fleetwood\, to create a fresh new take on the Blues. “I’ve always wanted to do a Blues album and when Mick and I started talking about working together\, I thought who better to work with than Mick Fleetwood?” The result is something exhilarating and unique\, as these two titans of their instruments reinterpret some of the greatest songs written by some of their favorite songwriters in a Blues setting. \nIt’s a union whose roots go back to the late 1990s when a young Shimabukuro met and played with Fleetwood at the Hawaiian Music Awards ceremony along with singer songwriter Kenny Loggins. It wasn’t until a few years ago\, that the two were reconnected by a mutual friend at a Fleetwood Mac reunion concert in Nashville. That night\, the seeds of the collaboration were planted at Fleetwood’s suggestion. Not long thereafter the two convened along with Jake’s touring bassist Jackson Waldhoff and keyboard player Michael Grande to start work on a new studio album in Maui. Mark Johnstone from The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band plays keys on two songs\, “Need Your Love So Bad\,” and “Rockin’ In The Free World.”

Published in Japan from 2011 to 2015\, it inspired a live-action adaptation in 2025\, and Japan Society is honored now to present this film with original manga creator Akiko Higashimura joining us in-person for a Q&A and signing. \nHigh schooler Akiko (Mei Nagano) has big plans to become a popular manga creator before she even graduates\, but she needs to get much better at drawing if she ever wants to reach her goal. Looking for an easy fix\, she signs up for an art class\, thinking all her problems will soon be solved. Higashimura was born in 1975 in Miyazaki Prefecture. Influenced by shojo manga of the 1980s\, she aspired to become a manga artist from a young age. She debuted as a professional manga artist in manga magazine Bouquet Deluxe in 1999 with the short story Fruits Komori. Her first serialized work was Kisekae Yuka-chan in 2001\, published in the magazine Cookie. Cat is sold out for this session. \nShape silk and fabric into a stunning Japanese decorative doll\, one piece at a time. \nKimekomi is a traditional Japanese craft with deep cultural roots. Using a wooden base\, you tuck colorful silk and fabric into carved grooves to create a beautiful keepsake doll—no sewing required. In this hands-on workshop\, our instructor guides you step by step as you bring your own doll to life and take it home. \nThis class welcomes all skill levels—whether you are completely new to Japanese craft or have an artistic background. All materials are included. \nYour instructor\, Keiko Fukuda\, was born in Nagasaki and studied Pop Art in Tokyo. She has taught traditional Japanese crafts\, famous painting reproductions\, and printmaking across several countries\, and founded YUME CLOUD STUDIO in 2016. \nPLEASE NOTE: The class sign up deadline is 2 hours before the class begins.
