Rising to fame as the first Chinese female in the United States\, she became an oddity among curios as Americans marveled at the opportunity to observe her astonishing little feet\, broken and bound to resemble lotuses. \nAs the story moves from 1820s Canton to P.T. Barnum’s American Museum\, to Gold Rush San Francisco\, three women introduce us to her many names. Her mother calls her Little Sparrow and sells her to a captain who sails her to New York. The captain’s wife names her Julia and “graciously” treats her as her own. And when she is shunted off to P.T Barnum\, her fellow human exhibitions call her China. Eventually arriving in San Francisco’s Chinatown\, she will at long last claim her name and her own story. \nCombining archival research and brilliantly imaginative storytelling\, Bo Wang masterfully fills in history’s gaps to weave a powerful narrative of survival in the face of hardship\, tragedy\, and betrayal. Told through the eyes of those around her; mirroring her life as an object on display\, until we finally see the world through her own eyes. \n\n\n\n\n\n ABOUT THE AUTHOR \nBo Wang was born in Cincinnati to Taiwanese American parents. Her childhood was peppered with stories of the Monkey King alongside those of Frog and Toad. A graduate of Sycamore Public Schools\, Bo holds an A.B. in history and literature from Harvard College. She now lives in Boston with her family. The Chinese Lady is her debut novel. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nAlice Evelyn Yang is a Chinese American writer from Norfolk\, Virginia. Her debut novel\, A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing\, was selected by booksellers as an Indie Next and Indies Introduce pick and longlisted for the Women’s Prize. She is the recipient of the 2023 Jesmyn Ward Prize from Michigan Quarterly Review\, and her work has been published in MQR\, The Rumpus\, and the Asian American Writers Workshop’s The Margins\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the world premiere of Alison Nguyen’s High Line & CHANEL co-commission\, followed by a conversation with the artist. \n\n\nIn her compelling new film for High Line Originals\, co-commissioned with CHANEL Culture Fund\, Nguyen explores the obscure nuclear history of Westbeth Artist Housing’s building—the former headquarters for Bell Laboratories\, a research facility tied to the development of communication technologies and\, later\, the atomic bomb. Inspired by a severed fragment of the original High Line freight rail left embedded in Westbeth’s facade\, and the High Line’s own history of transformation\, Nguyen reflects on the historical narratives that persist—and those quietly erased—within sites of adaptive reuse. \nYou’re invited to the premiere of Nguyen’s new work Prior Occupants\, co-commissioned by High Line Art and CHANEL Culture Fund. Following the screening\, the artist will be joined in conversation by High Line Art Associate Curator\, Taylor Zakarin\, to discuss her practice and this exciting new work. \nPart of High Line Channel\, High Line Originals is High Line Art’s commissioning program for artists working in time-based media. This initiative invites emerging or underrecognized US-based artists\, nominated by a trusted group of contemporary curators\, to submit a proposal for a new video work that considers the context of the park in a meaningful way and will resonate with our diverse audience. \nHigh Line Originals launched in 2019 with Tourmaline’s Salacia\, which is now held in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. Other past commissions include Onyeka Igwe’s The Miracle on George Green (2021)\, and Alicia Mersy’s NYC Wisdom (2024). In 2025\, High Line Art partnered with CHANEL Culture Fund\, and together co-commissioned Frank WANG Yefeng’s Groundless Flower – ཨ (2025). \nAbout the Artist: \nAlison Nguyen (b. 1986\, Wilmington\, Delaware) is a visual artist working across video\, installation\, performance\, and sculpture. Using approaches of speculative fiction\, documentary research\, and embodied performance\, Nguyen creates works that reconsider how narratives operate within the individual\, the institution\, the archive\, and within the politics of cultural memory. \nNguyen lives and works in New York\, New York. Solo screenings and exhibitions of her work have been presented at Storefront for Art and Architecture\, New York\, New York (2026); Art Basel Hong Kong Encounters\, Hong Kong (2025); Murmurs\, Los Angeles (2024); Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, New York (2023); MIT List Center for Visual Arts\, Cambridge\, Massachusetts (2023); and e-flux\, Brooklyn\, New York (2023).
