DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the July ALA Brain Trust! \n​As we celebrate summer milestones like Canada Day and America’s 250th\, we are stepping past corporate metrics and national borders to focus on something much closer to home: the lived experience of growing up Asian in a Western society. \n​We will also spotlight one of our key nonprofit partners\, OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates\, featuring their Executive Director\, Thu Nguyen. \n​This session is all about holding space for the personal narratives that shape us—navigating identity between two worlds\, honoring our family histories\, and mapping out a supportive path for the youth coming up behind us. \n​What to Expect: \n\n\n​🌱 OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates Spotlight: We are partnering with OCA to explore their legacy of grassroots advocacy\, youth leadership pipelines\, and intergenerational empowerment. They will also give us an inside look at their upcoming National Convention in Detroit (July 23-26)\, which is entirely focused on inspiring and mobilizing the next generation. \n\n\n​💭 Open Community Dialogue: We will transition into a casual\, authentic community huddle. DESCRIPTION:Bengali Mental Health Movement is partnering with Apicha CHC and Amader Dawat to present a special Alaap for Queer Bengalis in NYC! \n\n\n\n\nThe Bengali Mental Health Movement is partnering with Apicha Community Health Center and Amader Dawat to present a special Alaap event in July for the queer Bengali community in New York City. \nDuring this session\, two queer Bengali facilitators will hold space for participants to discuss their lived experiences of being Bengali and queer\, coping with challenges the community faces\, and engaging creative and holistic approaches to growing connection\, support\, and community. \nDinner will be served as well as giveaways\, courtesy of Apicha! \nMeet our facilitators: \n\nRobbie Ahmed\, music producer\, writer\, and educator\nSadaaf Mamoon\, MHC-LP\, psychotherapist\n\nWhile this session is facilitated by individuals with mental health training\, Alaap is not group therapy and is not a replacement for therapy or other mental health treatment. Alaap is a space for conversation\, reflection\, and community\, where lived experience is valued\, and everyone brings wisdom. \nThe Pride Alaap is only open to people who identify as queer and Bengali.

DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Chinese in America is proud to partner with Connect/Hamilton Madison House to present a series of public programs focused on mental wellness: Care & Connect. This series aims to provide accessible resources while creating a space for open conversation\, helping to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health support. \nJoin us for our second Care & CONNECT event\, Understanding & Recognizing Cultural Trauma\, a workshop led by Hamilton Madison House’s Dr. Jihan Ryu and Dr. Kristin Kim-Martin.\n\nDr. Kim-Martin is a psychologist whose research centers on cultural trauma and the immigration experience. Her dissertation explored how immigration shapes the help-seeking behaviors of second-generation Korean Americans. Dr. Jihan Ryu is CONNECT’s primary psychiatrist\, providing trauma-informed\, culturally competent care in our Lower East Side community.\n\nOpen to community members and mental health professionals alike\, this workshop offers an accessible entry point into what we mean by “cultural trauma” and an opportunity to reflect on how our own experiences may be shaped by it — as well as tools for connecting with others across similar and different cultures in ways that honor our histories\, traumas\, and varied cultural norms.\n\nWe will explore how trauma translates across generations\, drawing on historical events and the communities they impacted — including the Korean War\, American slavery\, the Ukrainian Holodomor\, and the Chinese Cultural Revolution. And making full use of our venue\, the workshop will engage directly with MOCA’s permanent exhibition.\n\nFree Admission | Registration Required

DESCRIPTION:Join Asian American Arts Alliance (A4) for July Town Hall at ICP\, welcoming filmmakers\, producers\, and distributors to share their projects and resources with the AAPI creative community. This month’s featured presenters include Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal and Settanant Thanakitkoses\, co-producers of The Last Breath of Sam Yan (2023); and Stacey Young\, executive director of the Pacific Island Film Festival (PIFF) of New York City. Registrants will receive free admission to the museum’s exhibitions. \nAdditionally\, the evening will feature a line-up of brief pitches from the community. After the presentations\, we’ll host a potluck meal in the ICP Cafe\, so please bring something to share; homemade or store bought items are welcome. A4 will provide drinks. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public. We suggest a $5 donation to go towards keeping A4’s programs free. RSVP is required to attend and/or pitch\, and will include admission to ICP’s galleries. You do not have to pitch to attend. \nAbout A4’s Town Hall\nTown Hall is A4’s bi-monthly community gathering event that features presentations\, pitches\, and power networking over a potluck meal. We welcome artists of all disciplines\, as well as arts organizations\, to share upcoming projects\, find collaborators\, or discover new opportunities in a lively space.
