SUMMARY:Niladri Kumaar 'The Space Between the Notes'
DESCRIPTION:Sitar maestro Niladri Kumaar is hailed as a maverick musician and composer\, a celebrated ambassador\, and an iconic figure in Indian music\, renowned for his compelling and innovative style. Central to his impressive portfolio is his long-running creative partnership with the late Zakir Hussain\, a sitar-tabla dialogue that became one of the most beloved and significant collaborations in contemporary Indian music\, including their sold-out WMI appearance at the Skirball Center in 2022. \nThe Space Between the Notes\, an extraordinary live recording from Mumbai\, India\, captures the only documented full performance of Kumaar and Hussain together. This concert draws from that profound musical and personal bond\, with a repertoire shaped by the spirit\, spontaneity\, and depth of their collaborations. \nNiladri and his electric sitar (zitar) will be joined on stage by Agnelo Fernandes (keys)\, Sambit Chatterjee (drums)\, and Satyajit Talwalkar (tabla) for a program of original compositions and selections closely connected to his work with Zakir Hussain\, bringing their shared repertoire and musical conversation into the present. \nThe COUNTERPOINT series focuses on contemporary artists who push the boundaries of what “world music” can mean in the 21st Century.

Join us for a special concert with the Aga Khan Master Musicians\, with Vincent Peirani & Vincent Ségal. \nThe artist collective of Aga Khan Master Musicians was formed through the Aga Khan Music Programme\, a multi-faceted education\, performance\, production\, commissioning\, and awards platform that convenes leading artists from the Eastern and Mediterranean worlds to explore what happens when long-travelled musical paths meet again in the present. \nThe members of Aga Khan Master Musicians and their special guests — collectively representing roots in Central Asia\, the Middle East\, and France — draw on both their cultural heritages and their personal experiences\, including encounters with displacement and migration\, to create a modern sound that resonates across continents and centuries. Here\, the group performs a fresh program of jointly created works inspired by the ancient routes that once connected trade and culture between Asia and the Mediterranean. The instrumentation itself embodies this spirit of cross-cultural dialogue: Feras Charestan on the qanun\, a plucked string instrument of the Middle East; Abbos Kosimov on the doira\, the traditional Uzbek frame drum; Vincent Peirani on the accordion; Basel Rajoub on the saxophone and the duclar\, a Middle Eastern wind instrument; Vincent Ségal on the cello; and Yurdal Tokcan on the oud\, the lute-like plucked instrument emblematic of the Middle East. \nThe Aga Khan Master Musicians\nThe Aga Khan Master Musicians create music inspired by their own deep roots in the cultures of the Middle East and Mediterranean Basin\, and Central Asia. Brought together by the Aga Khan Music Programme to explore how musical innovation can contribute to the revitalization of cultural heritage\, the Master Musicians are venerated performers and composer-arrangers who appear on the world’s most prestigious stages while also serving as preeminent teachers\, mentors\, and curators. Each of these exceptional artists has achieved mastery within a rigorous musical tradition defined by canonical styles\, repertoires\, pedagogy\, and performance techniques. At the same time\, they share a belief that tradition can serve as an invaluable compass for an artistic search into new forms of creativity inspired but not constrained by the past. This search has led to a strikingly original body of work composed\, arranged\, and performed by the Master Musicians\, often joined by distinguished guests. \n
