But when a summer in the mountain temples of Lion Rock Hill results in a crisis of faith\, Eric is confused by his feelings of betrayal. His growing understanding of his place in Hong Kong society and the circumstances surrounding his uncle’s disappearance compels him to question all that he has come to believe is true. And just like his uncle before him\, Eric finds himself forced to choose between his family and himself. \nSUNSET AT LION ROCK is a letter from a nephew to his uncle who died before he was born. It serves as a window into parts of a Eurasian child’s life which his family can never know\, documenting his attempt to navigate racial confusion\, religious trauma\, the meaning of friendship\, and the struggle for self-discovery in a shifting culture on the eve of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China (PRO). \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMatthew Wong Foreman is a Hong Kong-born writer. He read history and philosophy in Hong Kong and Oxford before completing a PhD in History at Northwestern University in the United States\, where he taught history and writing. A monograph entitled To Mix or Not to Mix: The Making of the Chinese Race\, 1895-1949\, is forthcoming in 2027 (Brill\, Leiden). He is currently a lecturer at the University of Hong Kong. Sunset at Lion Rock is his debut novel. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nSheung-King is a writer from Hong Kong. His second novel\, Batshit Seven\, won the Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. His debut novel\, You are Eating an Orange. You are Naked\, was a finalist for the 2021 Governor General’s Award\, a finalist for the 2021 Canada First Novel Award\, and longlisted for CBC’s Canada Reads 2021. He holds an MFA from The University of Guelph and is completing a PhD in Creative Writing at The University of East Anglia.
