SUMMARY:Leenalchi
DESCRIPTION:Seoul alt-pop sensation Leenalchi live at Pioneer Works\, co-presented with WMI.\n\n\nThe Seoul-based seven-piece phenomenon brings their infectious fusion of 17th-century Korean storytelling and deep-groove psychedelic funk to Brooklyn for an unforgettable\, danceable night in the Main Hall. \nPioneer Works is thrilled to team up with WMI to present the Brooklyn debut of Leenalchi\, the sensational Seoul-based band celebrating their Luaka Bop debut EP\, Here Comes That Crow. Led by visionary bassist and film composer Jang Young Gyu\, Leenalchi completely upends modern alternative music by reimagining pansori—a traditional Korean musical storytelling style rooted in shamanism—as blistering\, bass-heavy synth-rock. \nWith a singular lineup featuring two bassists\, drums\, keys\, absolutely no guitars\, and four transcendent vocalists\, Leenalchi crafts a sound that is simultaneously spiritual\, ancient\, and fiercely futuristic. Their lead single and title track\, “Here Comes That Crow\,” transforms an epic centuries-old allegory about a warlord’s precarious battle into a cross-cultural dance floor filler driven by hypnotic\, driving rhythms. \nAbout the Artists \nLeenalchi (EEE-nal-chi) is a seven-piece alternative pop/rock band from Seoul\, South Korea\, that has taken the international music scene by storm. Rooted in the traditional Korean art of pansori—an epic\, operatic form of musical storytelling dating back to the Joseon Dynasty—the band strips away conventional rock tropes\, opting for a rhythm section consisting of two bassists and a drummer to ground the soaring\, acrobatic deliveries of their four vocalists: Ahn Yi Ho\, Park Soo Bum\, Ra Seo Jin\, and Choi Su In. To achieve their mind-bending vocal strength\, pansori singers traditionally train alongside roaring waterfalls to mimic the complex\, sonic nuances of rushing water. When layered over Leenalchi’s collaborative\, wordless funk grooves\, the result is a masterclass in rhythm\, storytelling\, and danceable avant-garde pop. \nJang Young Gyu\, an Enigmatic bassist and bandleader\, looms large as a pioneer in South Korea’s indie and alternative music scenes. His relentless drive to experiment with pansori began in 2007\, eventually leading him to form groundbreaking groups like BIBING\, the viral sensation SsingSsing—whose legendary NPR Tiny Desk concert garnered nearly 10 million views—and ultimately\, Leenalchi. Beyond his massive contributions to alternative music\, Jang is one of South Korea’s most prestigious and sought-after film composers. He has written the critically acclaimed\, pulse-pounding soundtracks for some of the country’s most celebrated cinematic masterpieces\, including the horror phenomenon The Wailing\, the stylistic western The Good\, the Bad\, the Weird\, and the global blockbuster thriller Train to Busan.

SUMMARY:The Forgotten Home Front with Sean Kim
DESCRIPTION:As the Korean war (1950–1953) drew to a close and South Korea began to rebuild\, American GI Roger Marshutz (1929–2007) was stationed in Pusan to photograph U.S. reconstruction efforts. In his spare time\, Marshutz also wandered the streets\, documenting the daily life of Korean civilians. The Forgotten Home Front: Roger Marshutz’s Photographs of Pusan\, South Korea\, 1952–1954 offers both an official and unofficial look at U.S.-South Korean relations\, as well as a portrait of a country in the midst of enormous political\, economic\, and cultural transformation. \nThis program will be recorded then released on November 2. \nBased on the new book\, historian Sean Kim will discuss the crucial role of Pusan during the war and the pivotal moment in modern Korean history. \nSean C. Kim is Professor of History at the University of Central Missouri\, where he teaches courses on East Asian\, world\, and US history. Kim received his Ph.D. from the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. His research focuses on modern Korean religious history\, in particular\, the emergence of Protestant Christianity. Kim is currently working on an edited volume on Korean religions.

SUMMARY:Book Talk | Carryout by Hasan Dudar
DESCRIPTION:A Poets & Writers First Fiction 2026 Debut SelectionIn the late 1970s\, Ziad Idilbi a Palestinian refugee from Lebanon\, marries Salma\, a Lebanese refugee escaping the war in Beirut. Resolving to start over for the very last time\, the couple opens a corner store in Toledo\, Ohio. Over the decades\, whether it’s bigotry (pre- and post-9/11)\, financial ruin\, or terminal illness\, the Idilbis find themselves on life’s outskirts\, always seemingly one day away from catastrophe. The linked stories in Carryout follow Walid Idilbi\, the youngest child of Ziad and Salma\, as he navigates the heartbreaks of youth\, the many colorful characters from Toledo’s Arab community\, and growing up into a writer. Unsure at times whether to run toward each other or away from each other\, the characters in Dudar’s exquisite debut suffer the absurdities and indignities of life in America with wry obstinance and striking wisdom. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n\nHasan Dudar is the author of Carryout\, a forthcoming short story collection with the University of Iowa Press. He is originally from Toledo\, Ohio\, and currently lives with his wife and daughter in Washington\, DC\, where he works in broadcast media. His fiction has appeared in Gulf Coast and Pinch\, among other places\, and was awarded the 2025 Pinch Literary Award in Fiction. A graduate of the Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism\, Hasan’s reporting has appeared in various publications including USA Today\, Detroit Free Press\, The Toledo Blade\, Bloomberg News\, TRT World\, and Aljazeera America. In 2015\, he co-produced the award-winning documentary The Last of Little Syria\, which follows some of the last Arab American residents living in Toledo\, Ohio’s historic Arab enclave. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \n\n\nReena Shah is the author of the novel Every Happiness and the forthcoming story collection Bad Neighbors. Her work has appeared in swamp pink\, Lit Hub\, Debutiful\, Electric Literature\, the Masters Review\, Joyland\, BBC\, The Guardian\, and National Geographic\, among others. She is the recipient of a Steinbeck Fellowship\, the Keene Prize in Literature from the University of Texas in Austin\, a Fulbright Scholarship\, and a Sustainable Arts Foundation Fellowship. For many years she was also a kathak dancer with the Parul Shah Dance Company.  She teaches at a public school in Brooklyn\, and lives with her family on Roosevelt Island.

SUMMARY:Yoshitomo Nara Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition by Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara (b. 1959) featuring new paintings and drawings\, recent sculptures\, and early works selected by the artist. Spanning the gallery’s 537 West 20th Street and 533 West 19th Street locations in New York\, this exhibition will be the artist’s first solo presentation with David Zwirner and his first major solo exhibition in New York in nearly a decade. \nSince the mid-1980s\, Nara’s multidisciplinary approach has produced a distinctive and varied body of work. His artistic sensibilities were uniquely formed and shaped by his solitary childhood in rural northern Japan. Nara’s formative encounters with nature\, folklore\, and children’s fables\, and his revelatory discovery of popular music through his self-built radio\, are the source of his creativity. Through introspection\, Nara freely reimagines his past experiences\, and they have determined his visual language and steered his stylistic development for four decades. \nThrough philosophical dialogues with his intrinsic self\, Nara creates personified entities. Depicted with big heads and wide eyes\, they are celebrated for their characterful demeanor and perceived to possess both innocence and defiance. Nara understands these figures as self-portraits\, and when his dynamic imagery emerged in the 1990s\, it was recognized as an expression of raw emotion\, carrying a spirit comparable to punk and rock music in its directness and intensity. Over time\, it has come to function differently. Today\, many people see Nara’s characters as projections of themselves\, mirroring their own sentiments and vulnerabilities. As a result\, these images have transcended their original impetus and become cultural touchstones\, resonating with a global audience and influencing younger generations of artists and viewers alike. \nBringing together foundational works from the 1980s and paintings from 2026\, this exhibition will illuminate the latest evolutions of Nara’s singular proxies. Newly completed paintings on canvas—front-facing portraits with direct gazes—show a significant development in his color palette. Over the past year\, his intricately layered colors have become more muted and highly nuanced\, while his increasingly diffused brushwork\, through which his forms materialize\, creates richly atmospheric depths across the surface. Other paintings reveal a new method in which Nara sketches compositions in colored pencil\, developing a framework drawing before applying washes of translucent acrylic—the figures adopt natural poses\, and their tear-filled eyes communicate an air of uncertainty. In tandem\, recent large-format\, monochrome drawings made with industrial oil-based paint sticks will be exhibited. By contrast\, these works are emphatically linear\, demonstrating the breadth of Nara’s two-dimensional output. On the surface\, his imagery may appear formally divergent\, but it captures a shared emotional intensity\, evoking universal feelings. \nNara integrated his drawing style into his painting practice as a student\, simplifying his compositions\, paring down his use of color\, and introducing an economy of line. Unbound by conventional methods\, Nara employs paint in ways aligned with how he uses pen and pencil. Whichever medium or implement he chooses\, for him drawing is an assured action\, the result of an immediate inspiration—it is a state of mind. In what Nara calls his “line” paintings\, he enlarges his bold notebook sketches through projection and reanimates them in paint. The deceptively simple outlines retain their original creative impulse and the freedom that drawing allows—the rapid execution and fluid delineation. \nIn conjunction with the presentation of paintings and drawings at 20th Street\, thirteen of Nara’s 10-times sculptural enlargements from 2024 will be on display at the 19th Street gallery. Coated in white urethane paint\, the matte surface affording an apparent softness\, these large-scale bronze heads recall the snow “monsters” that Nara knew from childhood winters\, created by heavy snowfall. He envisaged the enlargements as he sculpted their palm-sized clay prototypes\, fascinated by the potential psychological impacts of experiencing the small\, evidently hand-molded heads on a monumental scale. Encountering the magnification of their simple facial expressions\, and the play of light and shadow across their smooth surfaces\, nurtures conditions for serenity and contemplation. \nThis exhibition will coincide with the opening of Yoshitomo Nara: Sentinels of Stillness at the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden in Washington\, DC. Three monumental sculptures\, sixteen-times enlargements of Nara’s small clay heads\, will inaugurate the Annual West Lawn Series and be on view from October 31\, 2026 through November 7\, 2027.

SUMMARY:Emily Feng: Uyghurs in Syria
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a timely conversation with NPR journalist Emily Feng on her groundbreaking new book Our Hearts Burned for Home: Uyghur Militants in Syria’s Civil War (Columbia Global Reports\, October 2026)\, an extraordinary work of reportage tracing one of the most surprising and consequential stories to emerge from the global war on terror. \nDrawing on years of reporting across China\, Central Asia\, Turkey and the Middle East\, Feng uncovers the little-known journey of Uyghur families and militants who fled China’s intensifying surveillance state and mass repression in Xinjiang\, seeking refuge abroad. For many\, escape did not bring safety. Instead\, exile led them into the chaos of the Syrian Civil War\, where some Uyghur militants became an unexpected and influential force in the conflict that helped reshape the region and contributed to the eventual collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Through intimate storytelling and sharp geopolitical analysis\, Feng reveals how displacement\, statelessness and repression can reverberate far beyond national borders. \nAt once deeply human and urgently political\, Our Hearts Burned for Home challenges conventional narratives about extremism\, migration and resistance. It asks difficult questions about belonging\, radicalization and the global consequences of authoritarian rule\, while centering the voices of people whose stories have too often been ignored. \nCopies of Our Hearts Burned for Home will be on sale\, with the author available to sign them. \nFeng will be joined in conversation by New York Times journalist Michael Forsythe\, and the event is presented by China Books Review\, a digital magazine of reviews\, essays\, profiles and more — follow their newsletter for event postings and discounts. \nEmily Feng is an award-winning correspondent for NPR covering China\, Taiwan and beyond\, reporting on everything from semiconductors to drones\, environmental wastelands to girl bands. Formerly based in Beijing and Taipei\, she now lives in Washington D.C. Feng is the author of Our Hearts Burned for Home (2026) and Let Only Red Flowers Bloom (2025). \nMichael Forsythe is an American journalist. He is an investigative reporter for The New York Times\, and was formerly Beijing correspondent for Bloomberg News in the 2010s. DESCRIPTION:How can artists use their creative practice to respond to the moment\, build solidarity\, and support the communities they care about? \nJoin us for an interactive workshop exploring the intersection of art\, activism\, and community-building with multidisciplinary artist and activist Perry Yung\, co-founder of SLANT Performance Group. \nInspired by the legacy of New York City’s Basement Workshop and San Francisco’s Kearny Street Workshop\, this participatory session invites artists to reflect on how creative practice can foster connection\, resilience\, and positive change through building solidarity. \nThrough theater improvisation exercises\, creative collaboration\, and group reflection\, participants will investigate questions such as: \n\nWhy do I make art?\nWhere does my inspiration come from?\nWho is my work for?\nWhat impact can art have on the world around me?\n\nDrawing from decades of artistic and community-based practice\, Perry will share personal stories and examples of art that continues to resonate across generations – such as his spoken word piece Diary of a Paper Son\, which explores the legacy of the Chinese Exclusion Act\, as well as the enduring influence of Civil Rights leaders such as Corky Lee\, Grace Lee Boggs\, Yuri Kochiyama\, and Angela Davis. \nTogether\, participants will examine how art activism can serve as a catalyst for storytelling\, solidarity\, and social change – all in the spirit of fun and flow. In the words of Angela Davis\, “It’s a lifetime of work. Learn to enjoy it.” \nWhether you are an emerging artist beginning to define your voice or an established artist looking to deepen the impact of your work\, this workshop offers an opportunity to connect with fellow creatives\, generate new ideas\, and explore pathways for meaningful engagement. We only ask that you bring an open\, collaborative spirit\, and willingness to investigate your work and its place in society. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but RSVP is required. To help keep our programs free\, there is a suggested donation of $10. Capacity is limited to 15 people to help create an intimate\, supportive\, and participatory environment. There will be a waitlist. \nAbout Perry Yung (he/him)\nPerry Yung\, born in Oakland\, CA\, is an actor\, musician\, and activist whose artistry has shaped both stage and screen for over three decades. A longtime member of La MaMa’s Great Jones Repertory Group\, he co-founded the Asian American performance collective SLANT Performance Group\, known for subversive explorations of Asian American identity. His screen credits include HBO/Netflix’s Warrior\, Netflix’s The 3 Body Problem\, The Knick\, and John Wick 2. As an award-winning shakuhachi bamboo flute musician\, Perry has studied in Japan under the Japan-United States Friendship Commission and Asian Cultural Council artist fellowships. He performs live and records for film and television scores worldwide\, most recently on the score for all three seasons of the Warrior series. SUMMARY:Hand Taste: Cook Like a Korean Grandmother with Esther Choi
DESCRIPTION:We all know cooks whose fingertips seem to infuse every meal with deliciousness. In Korean\, that magic touch is called sohn-mat\, or “hand taste”―but you don’t have to be born with it. Esther Choi picked hers up from her halmoni\, or grandmother\, who used her hands for everything from smearing cabbage with pepper paste to make kimchi to crumbling tofu for mandu (dumpling) filling and tossing vibrantly flavored noodles for japchae. \nHand taste starts with seasoning but ultimately describes a way of cooking rooted in heritage\, intuition\, and heart. In her hotly anticipated debut cookbook Hand Taste: Cook Like a Korean Grandmother Choi offers delicious entry points to Korean and Korean-American cuisine\, with foundational techniques alongside quick weeknight recipes and show-stopping traditional spreads. \nIn her conversation with Eric Kim\, Esther Choi will discuss her career and her debut cookbook. \nPre-order your copy of Hand Taste: Cook Like a Korean Grandmother here.

SUMMARY:Securing Economic Justice for AANHPI Women+ and Families
DESCRIPTION:A Funder Briefing on Securing Economic Justice for AANHPI Women+ and Families \nOn Zoom – Monday\, October 26\, 2026 | 10:00-11:00 AM PT / 1:00-2:00 PM ET \nMotherhood and caregiving are foundational to to the nation’s health and well-being as well as its economy\, yet caregiving and caregivers remains structurally underfunded and deeply undervalued. Economic justice cannot be achieved without investing in the caregiving infrastructure that sustains working families. And among full time\, year-round workers\, AANHPI mothers are paid only 79 cents for every dollar paid to AANHPI fathers. \nJoin us for a timely discussion on how philanthropic investments can bolster safety nets and advance policy solutions that prioritize care in our communities. We will explore high-impact opportunities for philanthropy to center AANHPI mothers and caregivers in policy design and help build a more just\, inclusive\, and resilient economy in the long term. \nPurpose (Educate\, Organize\, Resource): \n\nRaise awareness about the intersection of economic justice and caregiving/universal childcare\nDraw attention to underinvestment in AANHPI working moms\, caregiving infrastructure overall\nCreate opportunities for philanthropy to deepen relationships with peers\, AANHPI community leaders\, advocates\, and organizations to develop collective action steps\n\nSpeakers: \n\nChristina Baal-Owens\, Executive Director\, NAPAWF\nSydelle Barreto\, Policy Manager\, NAPAWF\nKrista Scott\, Senior Program Office\, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\nCarla Bernal\, VP of Programs\, AAPIP (moderator)\n\nOutcomes: \n\nFunders will have a deeper understanding of how policy shifts (ex. lack of accurate federal data report)\, and tax reform can impact Asian immigrant women and caregivers both negatively and positively\nTangible examples of where philanthropic investments have immediate and long-term impact on supporting universal childcare initiatives that translate to supporting working moms of color/immigrant moms\nOpportunities to learn directly from funders\, community/policy leaders on the ground and build authentic and trust-based partnerships\n\nThis briefing is for: \nPhilanthropic leaders\, foundation staff\, policy advocates\, philanthropic-infrastructure staff\, and healthcare funders committed to advancing immigrant and women’s health equity. \nRegister to receive Zoom details. \nThis webinar is a collaboration of AAPIP\, NAPAWF\, and other pending partners. SUMMARY:Big Three Bon Odori Workshops in Japanese
DESCRIPTION:NISHIMONAI BON ODORI (Akita Prefecture)\n\nNishimonai Bon Odori is a traditional Bon dance with a history of approximately 700 years\, and it was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020. \nAkita Prefecture\, located in the northern part of Japan\, is well known throughout the country for producing delicious rice and sake. Because Akita faces the Sea of Japan\, it had historical connections with Kyoto through maritime trade and travel. For this reason\, it is said that even in Akita\, far from Kyoto\, people were once able to hear the Kyoto dialect. The refined style and elegant movements of Nishimonai Bon Odori suggest that it may have been influenced by Kyoto culture. \nAlthough the dance consists of only two songs\, the choreography is considered somewhat more challenging compared with Bon Odori dances from other regions. The two songs of Nishimonai Bon Odori are highly unique pieces sung in the Akita dialect. They resemble what we might call rap music today\, as the lyrics can reflect current events and allow singers the freedom to create their own verses. \nThe contrast between the graceful\, delicate movements of the dance and the uniquely cheerful melodies of the songs makes Nishimonai Bon Odori a truly one-of-a-kind Bon dance. \nMany Japanese people have the image that Bon Odori is a dance that anyone can join. However\, in some regions of Japan\, there are traditional dances where participants are expected to know the movements correctly and wear appropriate attire before joining the dance circle. Nishimonai Bon Odori is one of these dances. \nAs a result\, during the three days from August 16 to August 18\, the small village of Nishimonai\, with a population of approximately 1\,500 people\, becomes crowded with tens of thousands of visitors who come to experience this unique Bon Odori tradition. \n\n\nGUJO ODORI (Gifu Prefecture) \nGujo Odori is a traditional Bon dance from Gifu Prefecture\, located almost at the center of Japan. With a history of approximately 400 years\, Gujo Odori was also registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020. \nAmong the three Bon Odori traditions introduced here\, Gujo Odori is the most welcoming and accessible. Anyone can join the dance circle and participate. Although wearing a yukata is the traditional attire\, there are no strict rules about what people must wear in order to dance. \nGujo Odori consists of 10 different dances. One of the greatest joys of Gujo Odori is learning and dancing all of these dances. The songs are based on the local landscape\, customs\, and stories passed down through generations\, and some are even performed a cappella\, creating a deeply atmospheric and beautiful musical experience. \nDancers wear wooden geta sandals while dancing\, creating the distinctive “karan-koron” sound of the wooden soles. This sound is considered an essential part of the music of Gujo Odori itself. \nIn Gujo City\, during the two summer months of the festival season\, Bon Odori is held almost every day somewhere in the city\, creating an atmosphere filled with energy and excitement. The dances take place continuously in locations such as the main streets of Gujo and the plaza in front of the former mayor’s residence. On weekends\, there are special “Tetsuya Odori” (all-night dances)\, where people continue dancing until dawn. \nBecause Gujo Odori is a joyful and welcoming dance that anyone can enjoy\, it has many fans throughout Japan. During these two summer months\, visitors from across the country travel to Gujo City to experience and participate in this unique Bon Odori tradition. \n\n\nAWA ODORI (Tokushima Prefecture) \nAwa Odori is a traditional Bon dance from Tokushima Prefecture\, located on the island of Shikoku in western Japan. It is considered one of the most popular summer Bon Odori festivals in Japan. \nAwa Odori has a history of several hundred years\, although the current style and form of the dance were established approximately 60 years ago. From August 12 to August 16\, during the four-day festival period\, it is said that around one million people gather in Tokushima Prefecture to experience this spectacular event. \nUnlike some Bon Odori traditions where individuals simply join the dance circle\, Awa Odori is performed by organized groups called “Ren.” Dancers join a Ren and perform together as a group. Because the dancers must move in harmony\, there are detailed rules and extensive practice required to master the choreography. It is said that there are more than 1\,000 Ren groups throughout Japan. \nTokushima Prefecture is famous for its indigo dye production. Several hundred years ago\, many wealthy merchants in the region made their fortunes through the indigo trade\, and some were even ranked among the wealthiest people in Japan. Merchants traveled throughout the country for business and were influenced by the music they encountered in different regions. By incorporating the best elements of these musical traditions\, they created new rhythms and songs that became a great success. The image of people dancing with their hands raised was even captured in ukiyo-e (traditional Japanese woodblock prints). \nOriginally\, Tokushima Prefecture consisted of many small islands located close together\, connected by bridges that allowed people to travel between communities. While Bon Odori is traditionally danced in a circle\, these small islands did not have many open spaces for large dance circles. It is believed that people began dancing along the roads instead. This history is reflected in Awa Odori’s unique style as a one-directional dance\, which is unusual among Bon Odori traditions and makes it especially suitable for parade-style festivals. \nWith both hands raised and dancers moving to its lively rhythm\, Awa Odori is a joyful and energetic dance that brings people together through music and movement.
