SUMMARY:Exhibit: Transtrack
DESCRIPTION:Transtrack transforms the idea of a train platform into a multisensory space where the voices of elderly immigrants recount life journeys\, weaving an immersive landscape of sound\, vibration\, and oral history. The work amplifies overlooked immigrant voices—honoring those whose labor\, like the immigrants who built the transcontinental railroad\, remains absent from history. \nAlong a line of vibrating speakers\, memories ripple like passing trains. As the noise fades\, gentle voices recall landscapes that shaped their journeys. This shifting soundscape reflects the emotional terrain of immigration\, where the past is never still and stories unfold like landscapes passing a train window. Inside the space\, a waiting area invites new recordings\, connecting elders and younger generations through shared storytelling. \nBuilding on Phunsombatlert’s community centered practice and ongoing exploration of oral immigration histories gathered from local elders\, the exhibition invites participants from diverse backgrounds to share memories of landscape and migration\, fostering moments of cross-cultural connection. More than an artwork\, Transtrack is a living archive—preserving immigration memory through movement\, sound\, and presence. \nTransmitter is currently open 1–6pm on weekends and by appointment.

SUMMARY:Music: Triple Dose @ EVOL NYC
DESCRIPTION:Herbal takes over EVOL NYC 11/14 for Triple Dose — a night of underground hip-hop\, electronic\, rage & hyperpop with Yaka\, Delphia! & Xihong.\n\n\nHerbal Presents: Triple Dose @ EVOL NYC \n  \nDate: 11/14/2025-11/15/2025 \nTime: 10:00PM – 4:00AM \nLocation: EVOL NYC 2 Thompson St 2nd Fl\, New York\, NY 10013 \nHerbal takes over EVOL NYC for a night of pure underground energy. \nExperience the collision of underground hip-hop\, electronic\, rage\, and hyperpop — raw sounds from the next wave of the scene. \nFeaturing Artists: \nYaka — Shanghai-born artist\, producer\, and multidisciplinary creative blending Atlanta’s trap roots with UK jungle and East Asian melodies. At just 21\, he’s the creator of “Jungle Rage\,” a high-energy fusion of rage\, techno\, and tribal rhythms. \nAfter producing for artists like GAI and working with Riot Games on Valorant China\, Yaka has become one of the most dynamic young voices in the Asian underground. Now based in Brooklyn\, he continues to push boundaries between hip-hop and club music through explosive live performances and forward-thinking production. \nDelphia! – A forward-thinking artist from the emerging collective Virtual Adam\, Delphia! blends elements of dance\, electronic\, experimental pop\, and house into a cohesive sound. With his distinctive vocals and genre-bending production\, he transforms contrasting influences into a powerful and deeply personal musical experience. \nXihong (西红) – The liveliest “red alert” from Seafood Market Records\, known in the scene as the Chili Pepper Spirit of East Asian hip-hop. \nHis signature track “荆棘拳” kicks straight into a maze of stream-of-consciousness lyricism — words abstract like mysterious letters mailed from the edge of the universe. His rhymes twist and dance like tongue twisters; even AI needs a moment to process them. \nExpect heavy drops\, glitchy synths\, and unfiltered performance energy all night long. \nNo rules. No limits. Just sound. \nStay loud — stay underground.

SUMMARY:Jazz: Henry Threadgill\, Vijay Iyer\, Dafnis Prieto Trio
DESCRIPTION:Pulitzer Prize-winning composer\, saxophonist and flutist\, and NEA Jazz Master Henry Threadgill has spent his life reimagining the jazz landscape. \nA groundbreaking innovator with his own unique musical universe\, at 81\, Threadgill continues to push boundaries – including as part of this genre-blurring all-star trio with fellow jazz legends\, MacArthur “genius” grant recipients\, and musician-composers pianist Vijay Iyer and percussionist Dafnis Prieto. Following a performance in Boston last season\, Arts Fuse hailed the “unique summit of three intellectually minded luminaries who bridged jazz\, classical\, Latin and South Asian influences.” The trio has yet to record together\, and their performances are rare. Don’t miss the chance to hear them.

SUMMARY:From “Cool Japan” to “Your Japan” in 2025 (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Japan’s global appeal is undeniable—but how well do official narratives match what international audiences actually want? Drawing on his role as a Cool Japan Producer for the Japanese Cabinet Office\, Benjamin W. Boas highlights the need to shift from a government-branded “Cool Japan” paradigm to the more participatory\, fan-driven “Your Japan.” He examines what’s working (content exports\, inbound-tourism touchpoints\, local city branding) and what still misses the mark (top-down campaigns\, language access\, and diversity). Boas shares behind-the-scenes examples from NHK WORLD programs and community-level projects in Nakano\, and addresses today’s so-called “overtourism\,” arguing that many pain points are really problems of mismanagement. In contrast to top-down efforts\, grassroots phenomena are filling the gap: from overseas anime fandoms to the growth of riichi (Japanese) mahjong clubs in New York City\, organic cultural movements are shaping “Your Japan”—the personal Japan fans embrace on their own terms. He concludes with practical recommendations for educators\, policymakers\, and creatives on aligning domestic priorities with overseas expectations.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: The Web: The Birth and Legacy of New York’s First Asian Gay Bar
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1990s\, when racism and homophobia shadowed New York’s nightlife\, at the corner of Madison Avenue and East 58th Street\, a quiet revolution took place. The Web\, known in Chinese as 盘丝洞\, opened as New York’s first Asian gay bar\, founded by Alan Chow and his business partner Chan. For a generation of Asian queer immigrants who had long existed in the margins\, The Web offered what New York had never before given its Asian queer community: a home. \nThe Web is a space where Asian queer men could see themselves reflected\, respected\, and celebrated. This exhibition\, through archival materials\, photography\, and a project-specific interview zine\, we revisit The Web’s legacy and see how it redefined Asian queer nightlife in New York. In a time shaped by instability and uncertainty\, the act of imagining new worlds carries contemporary relevance. In that sense\, Between Worlds: the Intangible Thread is two artists expanding reality by holding open alternatives. It is through these alternatives that dialogue occurs—across practices\, across stories\, and across the ephemeral yet vivid spaces between what was\, what is\, and what might be. \n\nChinese American Arts Council / Gallery 456\n456 Broadway\, FL3\nOpening Reception: Nov 14\, 6–8 PM\nExhibition Dates: Nov 14 – Dec 5\, 2025\nGallery Hours: Mon – Fri 1 – 6 pm or by appointment

DESCRIPTION:“As deep as girlhood friendship\, and as terrifying as beauty itself: Ravishing is a necessary novel for our times.” —Meg Elison\n\n\n\nThe event will also be livestreamed for free here: https://youtube.com/live/wzh0H1KjdXk\n\nEvent guidelines: \n\nEach ticket will include either a copy of the featured book or a $10 Books Are Magic gift card.\nAdditional copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.\nA signing will follow the talk.\nHome address is collected for contact tracing purposes; it will not be used otherwise.\nThe event will also be livestreamed for free here: https://youtube.com/live/wzh0H1KjdXk\nAs a reminder: If you are not feeling well\, please do not come to the event\, even if you have a ticket; email us and we’ll work it out.\n\nIf you have any questions regarding these guidelines or to request accessibility accommodations\, please contact eventhelp@booksaremagic.net. \nA brilliant and compelling debut\, Ravishing shines a light on the dark enticements of the beauty industry and how it capitalizes on our desire to be someone we are not. \nA provocative\, darkly surreal novel of two Indian American siblings caught in the clutches of a beauty tech company\, Ravishing is a searing portrait of the beauty industry’s dangerous ability to change people’s relationship to their bodies and the cult-like grip it has on youth. \nFor teenage Kashmira\, it’s painful to look in the mirror; she has her father’s face\, and every feature is a reminder of his abandonment. When a friend introduces her to Evolvoir\, a beauty product that changes users’ features\, Kashmira is quickly hooked on how it allows her to erase the triggers of her grief. Meanwhile\, at Evolvoir’s corporate offices\, Kashmira’s estranged brother Nikhil first sees the product as an opportunity to make a difference and a name for himself\, but is quickly mired in corporate complicity as reports surface of the product causing severe pain and persistent symptoms in some users. As chaos ensues\, Kashmira is hospitalized and must negotiate the constraints of her new reality\, while Nikhil uncovers a vicious truth that will force him to decide where his loyalties lie. \nPerfect for readers of Gold Diggers and You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine\, Ravishing is a visceral\, yet immensely tender\, coming-of-age story of two Indian American siblings caught in the clutches of a predatory beauty tech company\, providing an illuminating portrait of the complexities of growing up brown\, chronic illness\, and our relationship to ourselves. \n  \nEshani Surya is a chronically ill South Asian writer living in Philadelphia. She holds an MFA from the University of Arizona and is a 2023 finalist for the A.C. Bose Grant for Speculative Literature\, a 2022 Asian Women Writer’s Workshop mentee\, a 2022 Kenyon Review Writer’s Workshop scholarship recipient\, and a 2021 Mae Fellowship recipient. Ravishing is her first novel. \n  \nRoxane Gay is a writer\, editor\, and professor. SUMMARY:Always more to say
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation on Experimental Performance Art from Vietnam!\n\n\nOn Thursday\, 11/13\, collaborators Lumi Tan\, Anh Vo\, Đỗ Tường Linh and maura nguyễn donohue will discuss the research and conversations that have led to the development of their upcoming projects\, focusing on experimental performance art from Vietnam. In particular\, the group will share stories\, findings\, and images from their January 2025 trip to Hanoi and Saigon which informed an evolving discourse around the conditions of contemporary performance art in these two cities and beyond. \nAlways more to say kicks off a broader series of events\, including an editorial project with Movement Research and a series of programs with Performance Space New York. Movement Research Performance Journal Issue #62\, to be published in early 2026\, will be dedicated to experimental Vietnamese performance art\, with reflections from over fifteen artists and curators. Their practice mobilizes the naked body in its variations to make explicit the entanglement of power and apparitional forces that cut across flesh. Their work is situated in the unlikely lineage convergences between Downtown New York experimental performance\, Hanoi performance art\, and Vietnamese folk ritual practices. Vo is indebted to Miguel Gutierrez’s unapologetic queerness and amorphous excess\, Moriah Evan’s speculative commitment to the depth of interiority\, Tehching Hsieh’s existential sense of time\, and Ngoc Dai’s guttural sonic landscape of postwar Vietnam. Their formal training is in Performance Studies\, studying with esteemed theorists and practitioners at Brown University (BA) and New York University (MA). \nmaura nguyễn donohue is Chair of Dance and Director of MFA at Hunter College and has been making work and facilitating\, curating\, producing\, and leading public conversations in the US\, Asia\, and Europe for over 30 years. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: UNRESOLVED: A Playable Archive of Rage and Reckoning
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of this exhibition from Risa Puno.\n\n\nWhat happens to rage if you’ve been taught to suppress or ignore it? And what if you could metabolize that rage in community with others? In UNRESOLVED: A Playable Archive of Rage and Reckoning\, part of Risa Puno’s ongoing Anatomy of Rage series\, the artist invites us to engage with this complex\, often taboo\, emotion through disarmingly playful experiences that spark conversation and connection. \nTHE WHEEL OF RECKONING AND RAGE is an interactive sculpture featuring two back-to-back spinners that pose raw\, revealing questions about how we process and respond to rage. One spinner asks what goes on inside your head when someone violates your dignity\, safety\, or sense of belonging. The other side asks what actions (or inaction) you take in response. \nSpin\, discuss\, and get real. Read what others have shared. Record your reflections and connect them to responses left by others on the gallery walls\, contributing to a living archive of shared experiences and emotional truths. \nUnresolved Rage Game is a collective storytelling experience inspired by tabletop role-playing games\, like Dungeons & Dragons. But instead of battling medieval monsters\, players navigate challenges inspired by real-life instances of racist or sexist microaggressions. Originally developed with Ran Xia during Soho Rep’s 2022-2023 Writer/Director Lab\, this raw\, vulnerable\, super-cringe (yet surprisingly fun!) exploration is designed to help Asian women and femmes process and unpack our various relationships with rage. \nThroughout the exhibition\, Puno will activate the gallery with in-person playtests of the latest version of Unresolved Rage Game specifically for Asian women and femmes\, as well as workshops for all identities to get curious about rage together. To learn more or to sign up for playtesting\, please visit: https://www.risapuno.com/rage \nAbout the Artist \nRisa Puno is an interactive installation artist who takes play seriously. She translates difficult topics — like social privilege\, data privacy\, or collective caretaking — into disarmingly fun experiences to help people connect more openly with one another. \nHer work is grounded in a pre-colonial Philippine ideology called kapwa that means “shared identity” or “shared humanity.” It’s the idea that we navigate through spaces with a community rather than alone\, and that we have a responsibility to care for others as we care for ourselves.

SUMMARY:Across Generations and Oceans: A Fireside Chat with Gish Jen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Bad Bad Girl\, the latest semi-autobiographical novel by Gish Jen.\n\n\nIn partnership with the US-China Education Trust and the Serica Initiative\, we cordially invite you to join us for the launch of Bad Bad Girl\, the latest semi-autobiographical novel by Gish Jen. The book traces her mother’s journey exploring gender\, migration\, and cultural identity through Jen’s poetic prose. \nThe event features a reading and fireside chat with Gish Jen in conversation with Qian Julie Wang\, New York Times bestselling author and litigator. A book signing will follow the event. \nAbout Gish Jen \nGish Jen’s work has been included in The Best American Short Stories five times\, including in The Best American Short Stories of the Century. A fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, she has received NEA\, Guggenheim\, and Radcliffe fellowships\, a Lannan Literary Award\, and a five-year Mildred and Harold Strauss Living Award. Her short work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic Monthly\, The New York Times\, and many anthologies; she has taught at Harvard University\, NYU Shanghai\, and other universities. Bad Bad Girl is her tenth book. \nAbout Bad Bad Girl \nMy mother had died\, but still I heard her voice. . . \nGish’s mother\, Loo Shu-hsin\, is born in 1924 to a wealthy Shanghai family whose girls are expected to restrain themselves. Her beloved nursemaid—far more loving to than her real mother—is torn from her even as she is constantly reprimanded: “Bad bad girl! You don’t know how to talk!” Sent to a modern Catholic school by her progressive father\, she receives not only an English name—Agnes—but a first-rate education. To his delight\, she excels. But even then he can only sigh\, “Too bad. If you were a boy\, you could accomplish a lot.” Agnes finds solace in books and\, in 1947\, announces her intention to pursue a PhD in America. As the Communist revolution looms\, she sets sail—never to return. \nLonely and adrift in New York\, she begins dating Jen Chao-Pe\, an engineering student. They do their best to block out the increasingly dire plight of their families back home and successfully establish a new American life: Marriage! A house in the suburbs! A number one son! By the time Gish is born\, though\, the news from China is proving inescapable; their marriage is foundering; and Agnes\, confronted with a strong-willed\, outspoken daughter distinctly reminiscent of herself\, is repeating the refrain—“Bad bad girl! SUMMARY:Reframing Suicide as a Shared Social Responsibility in Korea
DESCRIPTION:The Korea Society is pleased to announce that the ninth annual Sherman Family Korea Emerging Scholar Lecture Awardee is Dr. Peter Na\, assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine.  In his lecture\, Reframing Suicide as a Shared Social Responsibility in Korea\, he casts suicide not as an individual failure or “extreme choice (극단적 선택)\,” but as a systemic and cultural crisis requiring a coordinated national response. Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist\, public health researcher\, and mental health advocate\, Dr. Na examines the scale and societal costs of suicide in Korea and analyzes key structural drivers such as academic and workplace pressures\, poverty and isolation among older adults\, and the pervasive stigma surrounding mental illness and treatment.

Grueling hours\, rude customers\, a collapse in medallion values in New York City and suicides among fellow drivers continually chip away at his hope for the future. Under this backdrop\, crisis spills into his family life as his child\, Shoshi\, is consumed by a struggle: a desire to live life fully as man in a transphobic immigrant culture. This pattern has persisted throughout Eunhee’s life. After Young-ja’s death\, Eunhee grapples with mixed emotions towards her mother. She gradually encounters her feelings as she talks with David\, a cleaner from the ‘Grief Cleaning’ service. In the end\, she finds herself mourning after discovering a note from her mother hidden behind a photo. \n \n \n\n\n\nLife Support by Jamon Tolbert10:32 \nInspired by true stories\, an emergency doctor struggling under the weight of life and death decisions must confront his own hidden traumas as he teaches a young medical student what it truly means to save a life. \nTold with raw intensity and emotional depth\, Life Support has won multiple jury awards for Best Short Film\, Best First Time Filmmaker\, & Best Performance. It offers a rare glimpse into the world of emergency medicine\, where every choice can mean the difference between life and loss. \nMore than a film\, Life Support has sparked a national campaign to heal a system in crisis. It has inspired an educational platform that uses film and storytelling to confront burnout and moral injury among doctors\, nurses\, and frontline responders\, with the goal of reaching medical schools\, residencies\, and hospitals across the country. \n \n \n\n\n\nSonata by Eljin Yoo19:49 \nKorean-American sisters and classical musicians\, Viv and Gia\, struggle to practice a piano and violin duet\, as their mother May\, reminds them about the importance of harmony. \nTheir bond is tested as adulthood brings conflicting priorities—Gia pursues her musical dreams while Viv chooses to care for their ailing mother. \nAs their mother’s condition suddenly deteriorates\, they must overcome their growing resentment in order to find reconciliation through music. \n \n \n\n\n\nLast Breath on Earthby Kevin V. This exuberant little book takes you from New Year’s Day all the way to New Year’s Eve\, with stops along the way at the other festive holidays of the year: Groundhog Day\, Super Bowl Sunday\, Valentine’s Day\, St. Patrick’s Day\, April Fools’ Day\, Easter\, Cinco de Mayo\, Mother’s Day\, Father’s Day\, Independence Day\, Talk Like a Pirate Day\, Halloween\, Thanksgiving\, Hanukkah\, and Christmas. McEwan’s original creations are truly wonderful\, and he is a droll and delightful guide through the tools and techniques the reader will need to make all these snazzy cocktails and mocktails at home. The book is designed and illustrated by the inimitable Sandra Boynton\, who happens to be the author’s mother. \n  \nDevin C.B. McEwan will do just about anything to avoid getting a proper grown-up job. Since 2001\, he’s been splish-splashing down the world’s rivers as a member of the U.S. Canoe & Kayak Team (and 2016 Olympic Team). An avid amateur mixologist\, McEwan was recently told by a drinking buddy\, “You should write a book! And I’ll do the illustrations!” While such drunken ramblings are usually best ignored\, in this case the drinking buddy in question was Sandra Boynton\, internationally celebrated cartoonist and\, incidentally\, McEwan’s mother—so how could he say no? \n  \nSandra Boynton is the author’s mother. When she’s not busy taste-testing cocktails\, Boynton writes/illustrates books and writes/produces music. She’s worked with B.B. King\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Alison Krauss\, Lyle Lovett\, Patti LuPone\, Brian Wilson\, Kacey Musgraves\, Ben Folds\, Stanley Tucci\, Meryl Streep\, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Kate Winslet (a duet)\, Darius Rucker\, Zooey Deschanel\, Dwight Yoakam\, Patrick Warburton\, and others. But Devin is her favorite collaborator because NOT ONE of those other people ever even OFFERED to make her a cocktail.

SUMMARY:KAFFNY 2025: Water Lillies
DESCRIPTION:Water Lillies -by Chanho Lee\n\n\n\nWater Lillies Chanho Lee 1:58:38 \nThe water lilies blooms\, even in the filthiest waters. Amid the mire of selfish desires and the indifference to others’ suffering\, hope begins to bloom anew in the fleeting moment when we recognize the humanity within one another. \n \nSynopsis :Hyowon\, who dreams of becoming an actress\, runs away to Seoul with Eunseo\, a high school dropout. The two girls step into the sprawling city with their fragile hopes\, clutching at its promises like lifelines. Their first home is a basement room\, dim and shabby\, the air thick and heavy\, but to them\, it is a sanctuary\, a nest of possibilities. \nEunseo begins working odd jobs to keep them afloat\, while Hyowon\, drawn by her dream\, takes on menial tasks at a theater company. They are buoyed by their own visions of tomorrow\, their dreams threading through the cracks in the worn walls. Soon\, Hyowon starts taking acting lessons from Suyeon\, a lead actress at the theater. Suyeon’s voice is steady\, her words sharp: “Acting is the art of embodying another’s suffering.” Hyowon listens\, but the weight of those words eludes her. She cannot yet grasp the depths of Eunseo’s pain\, nor can Eunseo fully see hers. \nThe two drift\, parallel yet apart\, their lives entangled by need and longing but marred by unspoken distance. The city presses in\, relentless. Their lives fracture under the strain of survival\, yet questions linger in the spaces between them. What does it mean to carry someone else’s sorrow? What does it mean to live with your own? \nFor them\, life is an unanswered question\, fragile as the surface of water\, trembling under the weight of its own reflections.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Performing Chinatown: Hollywood\, Tourism\, and the Making of a Chinese American Community
DESCRIPTION:In Performing Chinatown: Hollywood\, Tourism\, and the Making of a Chinese American Community (Stanford University Press\, 2024)\, historian William Gow argues that Chinese Americans in Los Angeles strategically used their performances in both Hollywood films and Chinatown tourist attractions to influence perceptions of race and national identity during the Chinese Exclusion Era. \nDrawing on oral histories and archival research\, the book reveals how these performances were tied to restrictive immigration laws\, beginning with the 1875 Page Act. By focusing on the experiences of everyday people—from movie extras to merchants—Performing Chinatown uncovers the long-overlooked history of how Los Angeles’s Chinatown and Hollywood shaped each other and\, in turn\, shaped Asian American identity.
