SUMMARY:Silent Film in Sound w/the Stephanie Chou Quintet: The Curse of Quon Gwon
DESCRIPTION:Free concert for the public\, featuring a jazz ensemble led by Stephanie Chou with erhu musician\, Andy Lin. The first act will highlight jazz arrangements of Chinese folk songs and original compositions by Stephanie Chou. Followed by a screening of the silent film\, “The Curse of Quon Gwon” accompanied by live music from the jazz ensemble. \nThe Curse of Quon Gwon (Dir. Marion E. Wong\, 1916\, 33min.) is a pioneering\, partially lost silent film\, and the earliest known Chinese-American feature film. It’s one of the first films directed by a woman in the United States. The members of a Chinese family living in the US have a curse put upon them for becoming too “westernized”. \n \nStephanie Chou (composer/saxophonist/singer) seamlessly blends influences from her Chinese heritage with Western jazz and pop to create a bracingly original sound. With her band\, she will bring a unique cross-cultural expression and artistic vision to the stage for an evening treat for cinephiles and music aficionados alike. These vibrant scores pair music and movies in both traditional and innovative ways. \nABOUT THE ARTIST:‍ ‍Stephanie Chou is a composer/saxophonist/singer who blends influences from her Chinese heritage with Western jazz and pop to create a bracingly original sound. She’s performed at Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, Joe’s Pub\, City Winery\, and in jazz festivals across the US and Asia where her music creates immediate cross-cultural connections

SUMMARY:Books in Conversation: Jiyoung Hand and Alice Evelyn Yang
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to an evening of books and humanitarian fundraising on October 21st. \nThroughout our publication season\, we noticed our titles in conversation with another: A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing and Honey in the Wound both share themes of anti-imperialism and magical realism as a means to explore intergenerational trauma and the legacy of Japanese colonialism. We wanted to use our books and platform to fundraise for the @rescueorg’s global humanitarian work\, for while our fictional characters remain in history\, the horrors of war they faced continue to affect many people today.

Zhong reads and discusses the book with award-winning novelist Rachel Heng (The Great Reclamation)\, before an audience Q&A and signing.

SUMMARY:ASIAN FEMINIST HORROR Panel: Featuring NEEDLEMOUTH
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening as we celebrate Asian Feminism in Horror! \n\nWe’re celebrating K-Ming Chang‘s new novel\, NEEDLEMOUTH\, with a special panel at The Twisted Spine! Join K-Ming Chang\, Catherine Dang (WHAT HUNGER)\, Cassandra Khaw (FIND ME WHERE IT ENDS)\, and Jade Song (CHLORINE) as they discuss modern Asian Feminist perspectives in Horror. Chandra Claypool (@wherethehorrorsgrow) serves as moderator for this special event. \nCan’t make the event? Preorder your signed copy of NEEDLEMOUTH here! \nAbout NEEDLEMOUTH: \nCousins Cindy\, Yangyang\, and Mandy’s hot\, tedious summer unfolds in their grandmother’s hauntingly familiar house. Mandy\, the eldest\, seeks connection online and exchanges emails with a stranger. Yangyang\, the youngest\, retreats into her own imagination in search of meaning. But every morning Cindy wakes with strange objects in her mouth: a button\, a berry\, a coin. \nOne night\, a starved figure with a mouth the size of a needle-tip appears at Cindy’s bedside. She is hunger-afflicted\, a demon with no descendants to feed from: she is Needlemouth. Part vampire\, part hungry ghost\, Needlemouth forces the girls into a grim task to end a man’s life. \nCindy\, Yangyang\, and Mindy are plunged in and out of the demon realm\, where they are called to break out of the indifference and numbness of their claustrophobic worlds\, and where they are met with the most rageful and resistant parts of themselves. In a quest to satisfy the demon’s hunger\, they unravel their shared grief and reckon with the cyclical violence that shaped their family. For readers of Akwaeke Emezi and Carmen Maria Machado\, K-Ming Chang has crafted a reimagined coming of age novel that asks: what does it mean to become the monster instead of slaying it \n  \n\nK-Ming Chang is a Lambda Literary Award winner\, a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 honoree\, and an O. Henry Prize winner. She is the author of Bestiary\, Gods of Want\, Organ Meats\, and a novella titled Cecilia. She has been longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize\, the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award\, and the Otherwise Award. \nCatherine Dang is the author of the novels Nice Girls and What Hunger. A graduate of the University of Minnesota\, she currently resides in Brooklyn. \nCassandra Khaw is the USA Today bestselling and Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Library at Hellebore\, Nothing But Blackened Teeth\, The Salt Grows Heavy\, Breakable Things\, and coauthor of The Dead Take the A Train with Richard Kadrey. They are an award-winning game writer. \nJade Song is an artist and the author of novels I Love You Don’t Die and Chlorine\, which was lauded as “visionary and disturbing\,” won the Alex Award and the Writer’s Center First Novel Prize\, and translated into five languages. Her third book\, Ox Ghost Snake Demon\, is a short story collection structured around the Chinese zodiac animals forthcoming January 2027. They pole dance and live with too many books in Brooklyn. \nChandra Claypool is a Queens based reader whose favorite genres are horror and psychological thrillers. Chandra has been consuming horror since the age of eight\, and now proudly reviewing for Cemetery Dance Online and Scream Horror Magazine. You can find her on Instagram and TikTok under @wherethehorrorsgrow\, talking about horror and thriller books and movies. \nEvent guidelines: \nAuthors will be avialble for signing after the panel. \nIf you have any questions about the guidelines or to request accessibility accommodations\, please contact info@twistedspinebooks.com.

SUMMARY:Hilda Shen: Their Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Hilda Shen’s Their Landscapes inaugurates Solo Artist Projects (SAP)\, a MOCA initiative dedicated to presenting compelling artistic voices through one-person exhibitions of new work. The Brooklyn-based artist will present an arrangement of recent ceramic sculptures and prints in the museum’s Cheng Gallery. \nShen’s artistic practice is characterized by an inquisitive scrutiny of nature and an instinct for deconstruction. The forms can appear both ancient and futuristic\, naturally occurring and handmade\, undergoing construction and decay. Their details and motifs open up conversations that cut across post-minimalism\, Chinese landscape painting\, and architectural space. \nAbout the artist \nHilda Shen was born in Minneapolis (1954) and spent much of her childhood in upstate  New York before settling in New York City in the 1970s. Her father grew up in Beijing while her mother was raised in Hangzhou. Shen studied classical music at Oberlin College before shifting to the visual arts. She lives and works in Brooklyn. \nShen’s sculpture\, prints\, drawings\, and installations have been shown throughout the New York City area\, Seattle\, and Beijing\, and most recently in a solo show at Starr Suites in Brooklyn. She has created large installations at WaveHill in the Bronx\, the Tenri Cultural Center in NY\, China2000 in NY\, and the Smithsonian Flushing Town Hall in Queens. She has been an artist in residence at Willapa Bay AIR\, The Bloedel Reserve\, Millay Colony for the Arts\, Yosemite National Park\, and Platte Clove. Her work is in private collections in the United States\, Belgium\, and Beijing. Shen’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times\, The Brooklyn Rail\, ArtAsiaPacific\, and ARTnews. \nAbout Solo Artist Projects \nMOCA’s Solo Artist Projects (SAP) embraces a broad and open-ended exploration of contemporary art\, presenting a wide range of mediums\, practices\, traditions and ideas. It will feature artists of Chinese descent\, living and working in New York City. SAP will be a space for artists with established careers\, emerging artists\, those who live and work in and around Chinatown\, and art historical figures who deserve institutional attention. SUMMARY:Coffee & Canvass
DESCRIPTION:Walk the neighborhood with us and help build a real-time database of Chinatown’s storefronts! \nVolunteers who register will receive a code for free co-working (9am–5pm) at the Hub for the day of the event. \nWhy canvass storefronts? \nChinatown has been on the defensive for decades. Critical support often only arrives after it’s too late: After a legacy business closes\, after a block loses its character\, after displacement is irreversible. To change that\, we need to understand what’s happening in real time. \nThrough storefront canvassing\, we can: \n\nTrack closures and openings\, and see what businesses immediately need WtC support\nSpot trends in business types\, and identify commercial corridor shifts – what’s growing\, what’s disappearing\nAdvocate with real evidence\, and give policymakers and media the data they need to support Chinatown’s future\nPreserve culture and legacy by building a historical record of Chinatown’s commercial corridor\n\nThis is a monthly event that will take place every 4th Thursday of the month

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Bone Symphony by Michelle Phương Hồ
DESCRIPTION:Michelle Phương Hồ’s Bone Symphony mines the wreckage of colonialism and imperialist warfare in Vietnam and attempts to reassemble the bones.  \nTold in three movements spanning lyric\, documentary\, and hybrid forms\, Bone Symphony uncovers a world turned upside-down by war: evil is good\, saviors are toddlers\, children die before their mothers\, and civil servants—like the poet’s grandfather—become enemies of the state. The detritus of a shattered nation\, family\, and psyche serve as building blocks Hồ rearranges with playful irreverence\, giving rise to healing poetic turns. One can surrender not just to military powers\, but to love. The prison cell where a dissident is held transforms into the womb of God. In a world where no symbol is stable\, Bone Symphony reorients us toward curiosity\, kinship\, and the kind of mercy that sets free those held captive within our imaginations: “Every face / I’ve ever held / hostage\,” the poet beholds\, “is beginning to bleed.” \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMichelle Phương Hồ is the author of Bone Symphony (Boa Editions\, 2026)\, chosen by Aracelis Girmay as a Blessing the Boats Selection. Her work appears in Nat Brut\, The Offing\, POETRY\, Poetry Northwest\, and elsewhere. Her honors include a Friends of Literature Award from POETRY\, a Connecticut Artistic Excellence Award\, a BRINK Literary Journal Award for Hybrid Writing\, and fellowships from the Asian Cultural Council\, the I-Park Foundation\, and Vermont Studio Center. She received her MFA in poetry from NYU. Born to Vietnamese refugees in San Jose\, CA\, she lives in New Haven\, CT\, where she teaches poetry in university classrooms\, community book spaces\, and living rooms. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nMonica Sok is the author of A Nail the Evening Hangs On (Copper Canyon Press\, 2020) and Year Zero\, winner of a 2015 Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowship. She has received support from the Anderson Center\, Art Omi\, Hedgebrook\, Kundiman\, MacDowell\, National Endowment for the Arts\, Storyknife\, and the Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing at NYU and recently graduated from an acting program at the William Esper Studio. Her latest poems have appeared in The Believer Magazine\, Best American Poetry\, Michigan Quarterly Review\, New England Review\, POETRY\, The Paris Review\, and others. SUMMARY:FIVE TASTES: An Evening with Fuchsia Dunlop
DESCRIPTION:Fuchsia tackles the “five tastes” which a Chinese chef needs to be able to marshal harmoniously: salty\, sweet\, sour\, bitter and pungent. \n\n\n‘Fuchsia Dunlop has done more to explain real Chinese cooking to non-Chinese cooks than anyone’\, according to The New York Times. Dunlop\, a four-time James Beard award winner and TV food expert (Chef’s Table; Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown) has already explored Hunan cooking and Szechuan food with her large legion of readers. Now\, in her latest book\, she tackles the “five tastes” which a Chinese chef needs to be able to marshal harmoniously: salty\, sweet\, sour\, bitter and pungent. The delectable result might be green beans with “strange-flavor” sauce\, spicy peanut butter noodles\, or a steamed fish that sings with citrus notes. Join Dunlop as she explores the magical complexity of one of the world’s greatest cuisines.

SUMMARY:Pinch of Us - The Immigrant Artist Biennial and Talk & Taste Edition
DESCRIPTION:Fold dumplings\, share stories. Join us for an evening of making\, tasting & connecting—from domestic ritual into collective art experience. \n\n\nAbout the Event \nCurated by Sofia Thiệu D’Amico and Anna Khimasia for The Immigrant Artist Biennial \nPinch of Us is more than a cooking class—it’s a participatory workshop series led by multidisciplinary artist LuLu Meng and collaborators. The project transforms the Essex Kitchen into a communal studio for the 2026 edition of The Immigrant Artist Biennial: Identity Card and Talk & Taste. \nInspired by the Lunar New Year traditions of Meng’s Taiwanese family\, the project draws on the dumpling as a symbol of prosperity and care\, centered on collective labor. For this edition of the workshop\, curators Anna Khimasia and Sofia Thiệu D’Amico invited artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya and Rujuta Rao to share their own dumpling-making traditions with distinct folding techniques\, flavors\, and histories. We will be making a Goan vegetarian Patoleo and a Thai vegetarian and pescatarian Miang Kham. The workshop creates space for participants to explore the idea of the multicultural self. \nAbout the artists \nLuLu Meng works across media to explore the interplay between oneself\, others\, and the broader environment in contemporary society. Having moved between different worlds—chemical engineering\, costume design\, and life as a queer artist from Taiwan now based in NYC—Meng found that this crossing of disciplines and selves became the source of a lasting inquiry: what makes us\, and what we make in turn. Their concept-based approach examines quotidian life to surface cross-cultural commonalities and differences\, posing the question outward to the viewer: What shapes us? What brings people together? Using everyday materials\, data\, digital components\, drawings\, and images\, Meng creates durational\, participatory installations that invite reflection and engagement. @lulumeng.space | @pinch.of.us | https://www.lulumeng.space \nAmanda Phingbodhipakkiya is a sculptor and installation artist based in Brooklyn\, New York. Born in Atlanta to Thai and Indonesian-Chinese immigrants\, her work traces how forces of trade\, conquest\, and dispossession are pressed into bodies\, land\, and memory\, and what persists in their wake. Phingbodhipakkiya’s has been exhibited at MoMA\, the Brooklyn Museum\, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre\, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. @alonglastname | alonglastname.com \nRujuta Rao’s practice spans sculpture\, installation\, book art\, beverage\, and social practice\, alongside conceptual and functional garments through her gender expansive clothing line RUGA. Research-driven and personal\, her work uses material investigation to explore migration\, place\, family history\, and hospitality. Rao is curious about how artworks and publications can transform into spaces for gathering\, creating conditions for connection and dialogue between the artist and audience. Rao received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Parsons School of Design\, New York\, and her BFA in Sculpture from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. She is a certified Japanese Sake Adviser through the Sake Service Institute International\, Tokyo\, and a sake sommelier candidate. In 2026\, Rao is a member at NEW INC\, the New Museum’s cultural incubator\, a dual resident at Dieu Donné and Artists Alliance Inc.\, and has been awarded a fellowship at Initial Research in New York. @rujutarao l rujutarao.com \nAbout the curators \nSofia Thiệu D’Amico\, the Lesley Bodzy Co.curator\, is a curator\, writer\, and researcher based in New York. She is co-director of Transmitter\, a collaborative curatorial initiative in Brooklyn\, and previously served as assistant curator at Canal Projects. Her work focuses on migration\, ritual\, labor\, and place\, examining how artistic practice engages the politics of historical memory through archives\, performance\, and collaborative research. Her writing has appeared in Hyperallergic\, Artforum\, Office magazine\, and other publications. She holds an MA from Bard College’s Center for Curatorial Studies\, and her research will appear in Borders of Art: Migration\, Mobility and Artistic Practice (American University in Cairo Press\, 2026). She has been a visiting critic at NARS Foundation\, ISCP\, Residency Unlimited\, Triangle Arts\, and the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. | @sofia.thieu \nAnna Khimasia\, the Cynthia Wu Co-curator\, is an independent curator and has curated exhibitions and performance events in both Canada and the United States. Her curatorial projects are often collaborative and focus on underrepresented voices and histories. She was the 2023–24 AIRspace Curator-in-Residence at Abrons Arts Center and is a co-founder of International Arrivals (IA)\, a NYFA-sponsored project supporting artists hailing from countries in conflict. She produces and hosts the IA podcast\, which features conversations with international artists about displacement\, migration\, and transnational belonging. Recent publications include a new essay on Harold Offeh’s early performance video work and an assistant editor role for Kambui Olujimi: North Star\, Meditations on Boundlessness. She has taught courses on contemporary art and performance at Carleton University\, UCLA\, and Rutgers University\, where she is currently a lecturer. She received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Comparative Studies in Literature\, Art and Culture (ICSLAC) at Carleton University. | @annakhimasia_art \nAbout the partners \nThe Immigrant Artist Biennial is a nomadic platform that presents the work of immigrant artists across diverse formats\, including exhibitions\, public programs\, and publishing. SUMMARY:Juliet & Jul-Yingtai
DESCRIPTION:Juliet & Jul-Yingtai  \nWritten by Wisteria Deng\, Directed by Sissi Chen \n“She carries it on her back first\, but it strains her neck.\nKicking it forward hurts her legs\, and it screeches too.\nWhen loaded on her arms\, it presses into old wounds.\nNow she tries hugging it\, shifting forward in tiny shuffles.\nBut when it grows bigger\, she can no longer see the road.” \nGenerations of women have sought a room of one’s own. It is a small yet powerful ask — with a room\, one can dream. But what if a room is not enough? We need a stage of our own — a world of our own. In our world\, we define power on our terms. 我们创造自己的游戏。 \nJuliet & Jul-Yingtai is a world of our own. Here\, one does not conquer through violent fits. Instead\, we take root in the deep earth. Come spring\, we offer shades to each other\, leaves holding hands\, ushering in the next season. Here\, power lives in the memory. Always an uphill battle\, remembrance is a statement of resistance\, a decision to stay true to oneself\, and an expression of tender\, endless love. \nUltimately\, this is a story of love — of how women love. We have been taught to love as mothers\, daughters\, wives\, sisters. But when was the last time someone taught us to love ourselves? To love someone the way we love ourselves? Our body is not an apology. Our memory is not a curse. Our love is not a weakness. We invite you into this world of our own. In the next hour\, experience the power of an ancient Goddess\, the act of choosing to remember\, the journey of women learning to love one another\, then — against all odds — learning to love themselves.
