SUMMARY:From ABGs to “Wasian” TikTok: How Asian Identity Became an Aesthetic
DESCRIPTION:This engaging conversation explores how pop culture and social media have dramatically reshaped how Asian identity\, beauty\, and belonging are perceived\, performed\, and consumed online. Featuring author Kaila Yu (Fetishized: A Reckoning with Yellow Fever\, Feminism\, and Beauty) and moderated by Joan King (Kinda Korean: Stories from an American Life)\, the two will examine the rise of trend-driven aesthetics and labels—from ABG culture and K-pop beauty ideals to “boba liberal” identity and “Wasian” TikTok—asking what happens when a community’s culture becomes an online trend. Together\, they will unpack how these representations impact self-image\, desirability\, and everyday experiences of belonging. Attendees will gain deeper language and insight into the differences between visibility\, validation\, and true representation\, leaving with thought-provoking perspectives on who ultimately gets to define culture in the social media age.

SUMMARY:Niladri Kumaar 'The Space Between the Notes'
DESCRIPTION:Sitar maestro Niladri Kumaar is hailed as a maverick musician and composer\, a celebrated ambassador\, and an iconic figure in Indian music\, renowned for his compelling and innovative style. Central to his impressive portfolio is his long-running creative partnership with the late Zakir Hussain\, a sitar-tabla dialogue that became one of the most beloved and significant collaborations in contemporary Indian music\, including their sold-out WMI appearance at the Skirball Center in 2022. \nThe Space Between the Notes\, an extraordinary live recording from Mumbai\, India\, captures the only documented full performance of Kumaar and Hussain together. This concert draws from that profound musical and personal bond\, with a repertoire shaped by the spirit\, spontaneity\, and depth of their collaborations. \nNiladri and his electric sitar (zitar) will be joined on stage by Agnelo Fernandes (keys)\, Sambit Chatterjee (drums)\, and Satyajit Talwalkar (tabla) for a program of original compositions and selections closely connected to his work with Zakir Hussain\, bringing their shared repertoire and musical conversation into the present. \nThe COUNTERPOINT series focuses on contemporary artists who push the boundaries of what “world music” can mean in the 21st Century.

SUMMARY:National Dance Company of Korea: Mask Off
DESCRIPTION:Mask Off looks beyond the ornate costumes\, accessories\, and visual images typically associated with “tradition\,” and instead delves into the breath\, form\, and movement that lie at its core. Choreographer Lee Jae-hwa\, who has long explored the essence of “contemporary Korean dance\,“ draws inspiration from talchum (Korea’s traditional mask dance) to break away from fixed ideas of what is considered “Korean.“ Talchum is a traditional masked dance known for its satire of social issues and the ruling classes during the Joseon Dynasty. Performed outdoors for common people\, it features raw breathing\, exaggerated gestures\, and energetic physicality— elements that\, in many ways\, resonate more closely with street dance than with other traditional forms. Focusing on these dynamic qualities\, Lee reimagines the methodology of talchum as a contemporary language of movement that speaks directly to today’s audiences. The music is composed and performed by Park Da-ul\, a geomungo artist celebrated for redefining the instrument’s expressive possibilities with his bold and innovative sound. The charged synergy between the dancers creates an electrifying experience\, delivering a surge of energy that reverberates through the entire stage. \nSaturday\, October 31\, 2026 7:30 PM \nSunday\, November 1\, 2026 5:00 PM \nAdmission: FREE (Pre-registration is Required)

SUMMARY:Adrift in the South: China's Migrant Literature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lively conversation on the rise of China’s migrant worker literature\, bringing the voices and lived experiences of the country’s vast internal migrant population into the literary mainstream. \nWe will be joined by Xiao Hai\, author of Adrift in the South (Granta\, April 2026)\, a gripping autobiographical account of his 23 years as a migrant laborer\, as well as its translator Tony Hao. In the book\, Xiao recounts working 17 different jobs across seven cities in China\, moving through factories\, construction sites and service-sector work in search of survival and dignity. His story captures not only the physical exhaustion and precarity of migrant labor\, but also the resilience\, solidarity and hard-won moments of humanity that emerge amid relentless economic pressures. \nAs migrant worker writing gains increasing recognition both within China and internationally\, Adrift in the South offers a vital lens into questions of class\, mobility\, inequality and belonging in contemporary Chinese society. Together with other recently translated works\, such as Hu Anyan’s Delivering Parcels in Beijing\, this genre offers an unflinching portrait of the people who have powered China’s economic transformation while often remaining socially and culturally marginalized. The discussion will explore the emergence of worker literature as both a literary movement and a form of social testimony\, examining how personal narrative can illuminate broader structural realities. \nCopies of Adrift in the South will be on sale\, with the author available to sign them. \nThe event is presented by China Books Review\, a digital magazine of reviews\, essays\, profiles and more — follow their newsletter for event postings and discounts. \nXiao Hai is a Chinese poet and writer. Having worked as a migrant laborer for many years\, he was also a long-standing member of the Picun Writers’ Collective in Beijing. He is the author of Adrift in the South (2026)\, translated by Tony Hao. He lives in Beijing. \nTony Hao is a Chinese-to-English literary translator and writer. He is the translator of Adrift in the South (2026) by Xiao Hai\, as well as Tong Wei-Ger\, Ban Yu\, and others. His short-form translations have appeared in Granta\, The Wall Street Journal and elsewhere. Hao is based in New Haven.

SUMMARY:Sống: Photographs by Ocean Vuong
DESCRIPTION:Writer and poet Ocean Vuong began taking photographs as a teenager. With a borrowed Nikon camera in hand\, he captured intimate scenes in the nail salon where his mother worked for decades and documented the post-industrial landscapes and abandoned mills of Hartford\, Connecticut\, where his family settled after leaving Vietnam in the wake of the US war. \nSống: Photographs by Ocean Vuong\, the artist’s first New York City exhibition\, foregrounds working-class diasporic Vietnamese life through a photographic archive spanning nearly twenty years. The photographs on view echo the narratives from Vuong’s literary works by drawing attention to the quotidian and the deeply personal – Vuong’s brother’s shoes\, home altars\, a mother feeding her baby\, an embrace between friends\, an American flag. \nSống\, which means “to live” in Vietnamese\, includes several photographs taken in the aftermath of Vuong’s mother’s death in 2019 that frame the evolving relationship with his brother\, Nicky\, as they mourned and navigated their immense grief. Vuong writes\, “I started taking photographs as a way to make our lives legible to my mother. And my mother’s looking made the elegy legible in my work.” \nOne of the most celebrated American writers of our time\, Vuong invites visitors to gaze through his aperture and offers a meditation on loss\, labor\, and kinship through the refugee condition. \nExtended gallery hours and gallery closures: \n\nOn Wednesday\, November 11 and Wednesday\, December 9\, the gallery will remain open until 8:00 p.m.\nThe gallery will be closed on Thursday\, November 26 and Friday\, November 27.

SUMMARY:Leenalchi
DESCRIPTION:Seoul alt-pop sensation Leenalchi live at Pioneer Works\, co-presented with WMI.\n\n\nThe Seoul-based seven-piece phenomenon brings their infectious fusion of 17th-century Korean storytelling and deep-groove psychedelic funk to Brooklyn for an unforgettable\, danceable night in the Main Hall. \nPioneer Works is thrilled to team up with WMI to present the Brooklyn debut of Leenalchi\, the sensational Seoul-based band celebrating their Luaka Bop debut EP\, Here Comes That Crow. Led by visionary bassist and film composer Jang Young Gyu\, Leenalchi completely upends modern alternative music by reimagining pansori—a traditional Korean musical storytelling style rooted in shamanism—as blistering\, bass-heavy synth-rock. \nWith a singular lineup featuring two bassists\, drums\, keys\, absolutely no guitars\, and four transcendent vocalists\, Leenalchi crafts a sound that is simultaneously spiritual\, ancient\, and fiercely futuristic. Their lead single and title track\, “Here Comes That Crow\,” transforms an epic centuries-old allegory about a warlord’s precarious battle into a cross-cultural dance floor filler driven by hypnotic\, driving rhythms. \nAbout the Artists \nLeenalchi (EEE-nal-chi) is a seven-piece alternative pop/rock band from Seoul\, South Korea\, that has taken the international music scene by storm. Rooted in the traditional Korean art of pansori—an epic\, operatic form of musical storytelling dating back to the Joseon Dynasty—the band strips away conventional rock tropes\, opting for a rhythm section consisting of two bassists and a drummer to ground the soaring\, acrobatic deliveries of their four vocalists: Ahn Yi Ho\, Park Soo Bum\, Ra Seo Jin\, and Choi Su In. To achieve their mind-bending vocal strength\, pansori singers traditionally train alongside roaring waterfalls to mimic the complex\, sonic nuances of rushing water. When layered over Leenalchi’s collaborative\, wordless funk grooves\, the result is a masterclass in rhythm\, storytelling\, and danceable avant-garde pop. \nJang Young Gyu\, an Enigmatic bassist and bandleader\, looms large as a pioneer in South Korea’s indie and alternative music scenes. His relentless drive to experiment with pansori began in 2007\, eventually leading him to form groundbreaking groups like BIBING\, the viral sensation SsingSsing—whose legendary NPR Tiny Desk concert garnered nearly 10 million views—and ultimately\, Leenalchi. Beyond his massive contributions to alternative music\, Jang is one of South Korea’s most prestigious and sought-after film composers. He has written the critically acclaimed\, pulse-pounding soundtracks for some of the country’s most celebrated cinematic masterpieces\, including the horror phenomenon The Wailing\, the stylistic western The Good\, the Bad\, the Weird\, and the global blockbuster thriller Train to Busan.
